Jon Haigwood Posted April 20, 2014 Posted April 20, 2014 After looking thru the posts on parts packs I noticed a pack for a 354 Caddy engine. My google search only showed up Parts Pack posts. On one of my future projects (turn the Tweedy Pie into The Kookie Hot Rod) and it calls for a 1952 331 Cad engine. My question is will the 354 work as a 331?? Or is there another source?
twopaws Posted April 20, 2014 Posted April 20, 2014 Cadillac didn't produce a 354 from the factory. A 354 caddy engine is a 331 bored .030 over. So for modelling the Parts Pack Cadillac will pass for either. Hope this helps.
Ace-Garageguy Posted April 20, 2014 Posted April 20, 2014 (edited) Craig (twopaws) is correct. The Revell Caddy will pass for any '49 or later first generation OHV-V8 Caddy 331-365-390 through 1962, and looks enough like the '63 through '67 390-429 to pass with a little work. The engine in the Revell '49 Merc is also an OK first-gen OHV-V8 Cad, and the one in the Monogram / Revell '59 Cadillacs is very nice. Edited April 20, 2014 by Ace-Garageguy
Jon Haigwood Posted April 20, 2014 Author Posted April 20, 2014 I thought the 354 could be a bored out 331 but had not done the math yet. Most likely any of those caddy engines will work . I have a 49 Merc kit buts it's a AMT and comes with a 440. Since I am not a big Caddy fan I will either find a parts pack on ebay or buy the Revell Merc. I could always use the Merc on another project. Perhaps a $9 Merc Sedan Delivery Thanks for the replies and info
azers Posted April 20, 2014 Posted April 20, 2014 The amt 49 ford comes with a first gen 331 caddy engine as well.
Jon Haigwood Posted April 20, 2014 Author Posted April 20, 2014 The amt 49 ford comes with a first gen 331 caddy engine as well. Maybe an earlier release. Mine is a 2002 release withe the 440 and stock Flathead
Guest Posted April 20, 2014 Posted April 20, 2014 Maybe an earlier release. Mine is a 2002 release withe the 440 and stock Flathead The '49 Ford has the Caddy engine. The '49 Mercury has the 426. The Caddy engine in the '49 Ford builds up into a pretty nice engine. It can be built with three two barrel carbs or a blower. The later issue Fords don't have the hole through the block either.

This engine is what I would recommend for anyone looking for a '49+ Cadillac V-8. The only potential drawback is the tri-carb intake manifold, but with a separate valley pan and distinct intake runners, the intake manifold can be modified as needed: Plus, the Revell '59 Cadillac Seville kit was reissued in 2017, so it should be easy to find.
Mike999 Posted October 31, 2018 Posted October 31, 2018 (edited) It's Halloween Day, so most appropriate that another zombie thread rises from the grave! Something people may not know about the Revell '59 Cad Seville hardtop: the original issue, in 1995, had the very rare vinyl top molded into the roof. It was nicely done, with a good vinyl texture and the seams. This is the issue in a big box, with a photo of the car on the boxtop. Later re-issues, in the smaller box, do not have the vinyl top - Revell smoothed it out to a standard metal roof. I saw that mentioned, probably somewhere on this board, and looked at the bodies in the 2 kits. The roofs are different. A warning: before buying the kit in that small box, try to open it and check for warping in the roof pillars. This kit was a very tight fit in that little box and sometimes the roof got squeezed down too hard. I saw one of these kits on clearance at Hobby Lobby; it was a return and had exactly that problem. It was only about $10 so I bought it anyway. The kit is worth that much just for the engine and other parts. Edited October 31, 2018 by Mike999 omit
