cobraman Posted June 26, 2014 Author Posted June 26, 2014 I have had plenty of motorcycles. My last one ( a Harley ) I was almost hit on by a car going around 50. It was one close call too many for me. Sold it in 2005 and will never have another. Call me a sissy or whatever but no more motorcycles for me. Too many terrible drivers on the road today and I am just not taking the risk anymore. They are a ton of fun however .
Tom Geiger Posted July 17, 2014 Posted July 17, 2014 I still have my 1973 Peugeot Tour de France 10 speed hanging from hooks in my garage. And it's gonna stay there! Many years ago I decided I needed to ride my bike again for all those health benefits. So I took it to a bike shop and had new tires / tubes / brakes put on it and made it roadable. I started to ride it on the very same roads that I easily rode on the same bike when I was 14-16, in the 1970s. Oh my God! Traffic must've multiplied many times, or I just wasn't aware as a non-car-driving teen ager. Those cars were plentiful and awful close. I rode in fear every time one approached. The day a young girl in a car hit my hand with her right side mirror was my last day of riding!
Harry P. Posted July 17, 2014 Posted July 17, 2014 When I was a kid, and up to my 30s, I as fearless. I rode my bike everywhere, including downtown Chicago. I wouldn't do that today... but now I'm lucky enough to live near a ton of really nice bike trails tha wind through forest preserves, and one that is actually a converted old rail line... it goes for about 50 miles or so through the western Chicago suburbs north to south.
High octane Posted July 17, 2014 Posted July 17, 2014 I gave up bicycle riding when I got my first car. So far it's worked out fine.
cobraman Posted July 17, 2014 Author Posted July 17, 2014 Longest ride I ever took on a bicycle was from where I lived in OaK Lawn Ill. to a lake called Maple Lake. Not sure what the mileage was but my 2 friends were very tired when we got there. Stopped on the way back when we found a phone booth and called for a pick up. : )
mrindy77 Posted July 17, 2014 Posted July 17, 2014 (edited) I just installed a Shimano Dyno hub and Schmidt Edelux 2 headlight on my Handsome. This set will allow my to ride all night long...no batteries to recharge. It puts out an incredible amount of light off of 3 watts. The drag created by the hub is minimal and you don't even notice it. Japanese and German engineering at it's finest....the axis powers can sure make some neat bike parts. This will be handy later this summer when I ride in the Powderhorn 24. 24 hour bike race in Minneapolis. Edited July 17, 2014 by mrindy77

Harry is there any danger riding in the suburbs, or crime??? I read a lot of bad stuff now but I am out of touch where...
Harry P. Posted July 18, 2014 Posted July 18, 2014 Harry is there any danger riding in the suburbs, or crime??? I read a lot of bad stuff now but I am out of touch where... Well, there are always going to be "bad neighborhoods," but when you've lived here as long as I have, you know exactly where not to go... either on a bike or in a car! The stuff that makes the news is basically happening in two very specific areas within the city itself (south and west sides). But I'm pretty far away from those areas... I'm about 35 miles NW of downtown–the entire area around me is safe. There is always going to be crime, no matter where you live, but around here crime isn't an issue. It's very rare to hear of anything happening in this area, but of course, it does happen. Last year a clerk working in the gas station I usually go to was murdered in a robbery attempt. That hit pretty close to home! You can't live in a totally crime-free area... even if the residents of an area are law abiding, the crooks will come to you!
slusher Posted July 18, 2014 Posted July 18, 2014 How close was you to Drew Petterson and the circus a few years ago??
Harry P. Posted July 18, 2014 Posted July 18, 2014 How close was you to Drew Petterson and the circus a few years ago?? Not close at all. I'm in the far northwest Chicago suburbs, Drew Peterson is from the far southwest suburbs...maybe 25-30 miles from me.
