How to weather chrome?

I am building a 1/16th 1931 Model A as a rusty junker that has been left abandoned.

The chrome in this kit is beautiful, and in my opinion, is the nicest and most realistic chrome that I've ever seen.

Nonetheless, I need to tone the chrome down to make it look weathered.

Ideas, anyone???

I have used Testors dull coat to knock down the shine and then red oxide and grey primer shot at a great distance, to represent pitting chrome/dirt/rust. A wash in the creases afterward is useful too.

You might bear in mind that there were just three components on a '30-31 Model A that were chromium plated--the front bumper, and the two rear bumperettes. EVERY other bit of brightwork was polished stainless steel!

Ford was the first automaker to use stainless (Ford called it "rustless steel") for automotive trim. Made by Aleghany Ludlum Steel Corporation, the stuff simply will not rust at all, but it will turn a bit dull, and the minute surface scratches from years of polishing will show up with age as well.
