Probably caused by mildew being stored in a damp closed space. Try cleaning with a diluted bleach solution then rinse and dry off real well. Then let them sit in the sun for awhile. Old fashion way of disinfecting!

I have just lightly spayed Lysol in a mist over model boxes that I bought with that smell. It kills mildew smell..

You could also try some 70% deantured alcohol. It won't damage the paint or anything else and kill anything. Add a drop or two of vanilla extract, and it'll kill the odor, too.

Put them in a ziplock baggie w/ a dryer sheet, then put 'em in the freezer. I wouldn't trust any chemicals not to ruin any paint/decorations, and leaving plastic (windows & interior, etc.) in the sun is probably gonna discolor it, on a hot day it will definitely discolor it and melt the windows.

I didn't mean to store the cars in sunlight indefinitely under a magnifying glass! Just long enough to dry out and kill mildew spores!
