deano2450 Posted July 4, 2014 Posted July 4, 2014 I'm in the process of painting my Bob Glidden T-Bird and it has decals replicating the metal strips and rivets securing the windows. I usually clearcoat over the decals, but I've never tried it over clear plastic, such as windows. Has anyone had any problems with it?
booboo60 Posted July 4, 2014 Posted July 4, 2014 Yup,, I would and always use future floor wax on my windows, just dip an let dry, works grezt on decala too, not nearly as hot,,
High octane Posted July 4, 2014 Posted July 4, 2014 I've heard from a friend of mine who builds model airplanes that he used Future on his canopy glass and it works great. I'm gonna hafta try it on my plane model, as I value his opinion.
1930fordpickup Posted July 4, 2014 Posted July 4, 2014 Could he just put Future on the whole body as a clear coat?
unclescott58 Posted July 4, 2014 Posted July 4, 2014 Could he just put Future on the whole body as a clear coat? Yes. Many members of our local model car have been doing it for years with great results. Including myself. Scott
booboo60 Posted July 4, 2014 Posted July 4, 2014 Yes, JUST MAKE SURE IT DOES NOT, NOT HAVE STRIPER IN IT, With said, get a plastic tub just a little bigger then the body, fill with FUture floor wax, and dip body in, "don't let it sit, don't wait, dip an pull it out, I tilt mine from end and end, wait a few seconds, then dip again, I use a metal coat hanger, in the shower, and hang it so it drips back into tub, let it dry, then dip the glass in it, and set aside, while it "body" drips dry, I soak any extra up in a paper towl, in the corners, edges of the bumper etc,, the next morning, I dip it again, then dry, after 24 hrs, I run clean cold water over the body and wipe it off with my fingers,"lightly" this takes any film off, day and finish, should work fine, "now dip and pull it out kinda quick, if it sits like 20 30 sec,, decals will come off, ,thats only thing, so dip, wait about 30 seconds dip again, you will do fine, best way for older decals too,, good luck
Gothicz House Of Kustomz Posted July 4, 2014 Posted July 4, 2014 or ya can airbrush it, right from the bottle, or use a soft bristle brush, to brush it on, as it does self level...
slusher Posted July 4, 2014 Posted July 4, 2014 or ya can airbrush it, right from the bottle, or use a soft bristle brush, to brush it on, as it does self level... I talked to a guy at HL who brushed his on. Forgot about this method..
unclescott58 Posted July 4, 2014 Posted July 4, 2014 As far as Future goes. It can be very simple to use. No offense to Alan, but all we do up here in Minnesota is wet a cotton ball with with Future and wipe it on. Dipping sounds like over kill and messy to me. With Future being self leveling, the cotton balls work great. Only one warning with this technique, if a little cotton brakes off on what ever your covering, pick the cotton away before the Future dries. Other wise you'll have troubles with trying to get cotton fibers off your model once it dries. But, this is not a big problem. I've been using the cotton ball technique for about ten years now, and have been very happy with the results. Scott
booboo60 Posted July 4, 2014 Posted July 4, 2014 There you go, I have tried all, and dipping works Best for Me, you will figure it out, after all, its only a model car, and you cant really get hurt using cotton balls, brushes, or dipping, however, I used tne brush a few times and had decals moving on me, even a cpl ended up crooked, cotton ball is fine, if ya don't mind a few fibers here or there,"watch for snagging on corner edges, or chrone bumpers if ya have them on at this times, im making light on this, because it really is what works for you, as you can see, there are many ways too apply, and all work well, there are a bunch of good guys on here to help you, good luck and happy building,
deano2450 Posted July 4, 2014 Author Posted July 4, 2014 (edited) Thank you all for the suggestions. I've used the "brushed Future" approach a few times before and one time it ended up separating like water off a freshly waxed vehicle. Come to think of it, I think I waxed it to see how the paint came out, wasn't happy with it and then applied the Future. Then, I couldn't figure out why it separated like it did. Now I know. I'll save the Testors for a body without window decals. Edited July 4, 2014 by deano2450
