Starting work on Stacey David's Rat Roaster, but want to do it a little differently.

Instead of having a more "luxury" rod, I wanted more of a "rougher" feel. The idea was the drill out the holes that had upholstery and leave them as just holes (less weight is better, that's why there are holes in bomber seats, right?). But it seems like a daunting task, to get the hole started you need to be very exact.

So I ordered these cast bomber seats (by member suggestion) and I'm not sure if I'm happy with them. What do you guys think?

I started the center areas on both, but kept on trimming with a small drill bit on the one on the right.

How I'd like them to look.

I used those seats in my Rat Roaster project, finished with Testors Aluminum Plate Metalizer. The resin ones I had were already drilled out with only very thin flash to remove in the holes and slots. My general approach with my Rat Roaster was to tone down the corny details while conserving most of the original's basic themes. For the interior I went with the Speedway Motors Hot Rod Bomber Seats, drilled out the fake "holes" in the door panels and rear bulkhead, and used a metallic finish for a more utilitarian vibe. For the motor I ditched the exaggerated blower and carburetion and went with Kinsler style dirt track fuel injectors and K&N air filters.

That's what I'd like to do with mine as well, Bernard. Yours looks great. Not sure mine are looking that great though. It's tough to get that longer hole to look right. I might need to drill them out with one size larger drill bit.

the seats from replicas and miniatures of Maryland, while they don't have the oblong slots in the center, were certainly much cleaner castings that those, very very little cleanup and no drilling required. don't have as many holes either as the ones I am talking about have larger diameter holes. but still they look great.
