ok I know there will be a million choices here and a thousand opinions, but what would anyone recommend for the best looking, most realistically molded, most complete Chevy small block engine? I don't need stock peripherals as it is going to be for a race application.

this is going to be for a gasser that runs just a big four bbl carb...any tips on particularly accurate looking ones? I assume it would be a Holley with a lot of capacity.

thanks for any tips!

Bill, I'd say the one in the Rat Roaster would fit your needs the best, as its got an aftermarket oil pan, and other non-stock/performance oriented accessories on it already.

The other Revell SBCs in their most recent Chevy kits would be good choices as well...

some have claimed the parts pack small block as the best 1/25 scale small block.

(I'm tempted to say "But we know him as The Stig." but that's mixing too many media types.) ;)

ok thanks I do happen to have both those around already so they would be high on my list...

any others?

Besides the old Revell parts-pack version, you might have a look at the equally ancient AMT parts pack version. It's very clean and crisp, accurately scaled, and It also comes with an aftermarket, deep-sump pan and a single 4-bbl manifold. It includes a nice gearbox adapter, too. (The included gearbox is an old in-out style, though the parts-pack the Chevy comes in includes a Borg Warner T-10, on the Chrysler engine tree.)

I think if I were building a "period" car, I'd go with the Revell engine, but if I were building a current-tech, alloy-headed smallblock-powered drag car, I'd go with the AMT engine.

thanks Bill and that's a great idea; I don't know why I didn't think of it myself since I just used the AMT sbc in the mooneyes dragster set I recently finished. the problem I have with the revell offering is that multi piece block is a bit of a struggle whereas the AMT one is a breeze and does indeed look great. what will be going on it will basically be backstreet garage racing style, he doesn't have finned aluminum valve covers and stuff like that, although he did on the big block he recently replaced with the current SBC (and of course for which I had gathered up all the parts I needed!).

I already pulled down the rat roaster, I'm never going to build the car so might as well rob it, but now I am going to pull out an AMT parts pack and see which fit and look best. I will probably go with the AMT one as of right now.

thanks again folks and any other suggestions and/or discussion is welcome!
