chris coffey Posted January 12, 2008 Posted January 12, 2008 Ok MCM members, i know plenty of you on here have done commission builds on here, so i need your input on this. I have done commission builds before, but i never charged for them. The other night, i got hit with 2 in a row, and the guy wants to pay me for them. I want to charge him fairly, but not too little, or not too much, so here are the details- 1. 1965 Coronet- I have the Polar Lites kit, but i have had to strip the creme color off of the body and engine compartment. He has sent me correct paint he used on his 1:1 car, and lots of detail pictures. I won't have to change anything out of the Polar Lites kit, as his car is the same as the kit, but he does want it fully detailed. What do i charge for this? 2. 1964 T-bird Convertable- I have a curbside promo of this car. I also have the correct paint and detail pictures of this car. The Chrome on the model will need to be re-plated, and i will need to pilfer the Kelsey-Hayes wire wheels out of the AMT '63 T-bird kit. I am doing this model with just Body and interior detail. What should i charge for this one?? These ought to be fairly reasonable to do, and only one will need to be shipped through the mail. Your input would be greatly appreciated here!!

If he's a friend, you want to do it for him and wants to pay you, charge him the price of all the stuff you needed to build the model except time. If it's for a company or someone who uses it for commercial purposes, you add the going hourly rate for craftsmen. BTW maybe quote the price for option number two, so he knows he got a pretty good deal. HTH Luc
chris coffey Posted January 12, 2008 Author Posted January 12, 2008 Luc- both of these builds are for friends, but what kills me on the 1st build, the Coronet, is the friend that wants me to build it has cancer. I told him i would build it and ship it to him for free, but he very much insists on paying me for it, and this for me, creates a rather cumbersome problem.
bill_rules Posted January 12, 2008 Posted January 12, 2008 If he insists on paying, take his money and inclose a gift certificate to a nice eatery or theater when you ship the model to him.
lordairgtar Posted January 13, 2008 Posted January 13, 2008 Donate the money for cancer research or to a charity for kids with cancer. FTW
