Revell 69' Charger R/T (General Lee)

Here we go another muscle car build. I've never been the best at them but after my latest build, I feel as if I have more confidence to build them.

Everyones always loved the General Lee right? So thats what I chose to build, plus I've always wanted to do a General, thats more accurate then the actual movie kits.

Now with this build I know theres a lot of controversy on whats accurate and I will say before I even build this, I don't want a huge debate on whats right or wrong.

Yes there were multiple charges used for the tv series, the movie, and even the auto trader commercial.

The General Lee official year is a 69' however they used 68', 69' 70's for the cars. Most of the time there were coated over factory paint, and painted orange. And we all know those colors right?

The official interior color is tan. However a lot of the survivor cars are tan and black.

So as I say again I'm not looking to have a huge debate over right, wrong, and accurate, Im just giving a small description of the car.

Hopefully you guys enjoy seeing this build as much as I will enjoy building it.

I was even more inspired after seeing the new auto trader commercial and I heard there were talks that the duke boys may be coming back to TV, although I've read some of the actors feel as if it won't have that great of an impact as it did then, I think it will IMO

I will be basing this car off the auto trader commercial. Meaning the dukes were in it so it makes it OFFICIAL!!

Lets begin. YEEEE HAAAWWW

The kit is a newer Revell 69' Charger R/T.

With this kit I had to sand out the roof texture but there were no side markers. I also sanded the wheel well trim smooth. As you can see in these pics, the last ones show the roof sanded and the wheel well trim removed.

Here's the car after having it's panel lines scribed, roof sanded to become a hardtop, and it's whelk well trim smoothed out. Also applied a black was to the panel lines.

As you guys will tell I've done a lot so far so fast? Haha. Well part of the reason my last build took so long to finish, was because I started on this

This about a week so far.

Fist time using a testors enamels since I was a kid. And man do they spray so different from Tamiya's lacquer line.

Here's testors semi gloss primer applied.

I primered the body, hood, rear panel and valence, front valence, the firewall, and the radiator support, and and the header panel.

Also before priming I filled the back up lights of the rear valence. Using green squadron putty sanded from 240 to 1000 grit sand paper.

But I only have a pic of the body primered.

Next up the body was painted with testors competition orange.

As well as the hood, front valence, rear panel and valence, radiator support, header panel and last not least the firewall .

Then I detailed the rear panel using flat black, followed up with metallic silver for the trim. And also painted the key slot.

The radiator support has been primered, just not painted yet so that's why it's missing here.

Also the interior is painted detailed and bmf for the door trim.

Tamiya's Ts-46 Light Sand was used. As well as Testors Flat Black, Testors Metallic Silver, Model Masters Wood, and Tamiya's X27 Clear Red

Flocked with detail master grey, then spray painted over for a dirty look.

I may paint the steering wheel model master wood to add some depth and make it stand out more from the rest of the interior. As I did try to weather some of the parts. From sliding around the dirt all the time.

As well as to imagine it's a saved car from the series

The grill was the first thing I did.

There are 3 colors on a real 69' there's black. And on the insides of the front bumper there is a aluminum color look. As well as chrome on the outside.

I used testors semi gloss to paint the the grill, then cleaned off the chrome trim inside of the grill with a q tip. Then applied testors metallic silver on the insides of the grill face. And that's it followed up by it's decal.

Here's a pic of a real one so you guys can see the colors.

Here's mine. I think I did a pretty good job. Hopefully you guys can see the aluminum look on it as well.

Now in most shots of the car from the tv series there is no charger logo in the grill.

However this is Lee 3 which did have a 440 and did have the charger logo. I will be blacking out the R/T logo. I guess in a way this car will be Lee 3 with a different engine color since it was an R/T.

The 2005 movie has it on the front and back.

The auto trader mag car does not from what I've seen.

I chose to put it there because of A I have the decal, and B I think it makes the grill look good.

I was going to leave the R/T off but you would still see it it anyways. But I will black it out from seeing this shot.

The official engine is the 383.

However they used 318's, 383's and 440's for the show.

They used the 383's, & 440's for more power for jumping, and stunts.

The movie uses a 426 hemi.

Not sure what's used in the auto trader commercial I assume either a 383 or 440. But who knows.

And I only mention the commercial is because there's some good shots of the car in HD

I chose the 440 magnum because I wanted this to be a more powerful general.

I could have went with a 426 but didn't want too.

Now a lot of the engine colors varied.

I chose to go with an original color I seen in a survivor car.

Which is Chrysler engine blue. I'll have pics of that later.

Alternator was stripped from it's chrome.

Engine will take longer because I'm going for a more detailed engine build.

Alright last update for today. The only things done today was the silver trim on the rear panel.

And then this which I just did. I blacked out the R/T I thought flat black would a cool. And then I snipped off the license plate mounting bracket. And used BMF to cover the mark which I probably won't see later.

I decided with car I didn't want the front license plate.

Some have them some don't.

Here's the auto trader car it doesn't have one.

Thanks you so much. I wanted to add some research/ history with the general, and the normal charger.

I'm learning things, and so are others. Like I said I'm not making it to be a perfect General Lee. But I do somewhat want to re create some of it's accuracy/ history.

Byron great work on your General Lee your attention to the detail will look super when it all comes together. You may be interested in getting the "The Model Car Garage" PE set for this kit it will go with the level of detail that you are going to with this build. Looking forward to seeing more progress.

Thanks so much for the kind comments about my detail work. I thought about getting a photo etch for this. But really I think the only things I would use, is the fan, charger/ R/T emblem for the grill, and the rear view mirror. I may still get it. If not I'll definitely be using it on my next charger.
