Snake45 Posted September 7, 2014 Posted September 7, 2014 This is a P-51D that participated in the post-WWII Thompson Trophy races. Kit is the '70s-era Otaki, which has also been sold in ARII, AMT, and Airfix boxings. When I built it, I had only B&W photos and a verbal description of the color as "metallic bronze," so I used Model Master Sable Brown. Later I found a couple color photos of the real thing and it's pretty close but not exact. Gun ports removed from wings and cuffs removed from the prop blades, otherwise box stock. The "Jay Dee" and the number 37 on the fuselage sides are hand-lettered decals. The other numbers and the SOHIO Oil decals were sourced from Microscale model railroad sheets (of all places). Thanks for looking. And just for grins, here's the real airplane:
DynoMight Posted September 7, 2014 Posted September 7, 2014 Great job on this one Snake! Looks real convincing.
Snake45 Posted September 9, 2014 Author Posted September 9, 2014 Thanks for the kind words, all. I wish someone would do "real" decals of this one. I'd build it again, using my present-day skills. I can see several things I would have done differently now. But I'm not hand-painting those evil 37s again. Come to think of it, I have a 'net friend who makes air racer decals. Think I'll drop him a note and try to talk him into it.
LDO Posted September 10, 2014 Posted September 10, 2014 FYI- Tamiya's F-51D (Korean War box/shark mouth markings) has uncuffed prop blades. Nice work. I love those hot rod warbirds.

Yeah I know. But that kit was about a decade in the future when I built this one. I have the Tamiya KW D Stang kit. I'll build it as soon as I can decide what markings I want to put on it. (I have whole books on the subject.)
LDO Posted September 11, 2014 Posted September 11, 2014 Miss Ashley II. (I wish). I would love to see High Planes do that in 1/48. Somewhere around here is a Monogram P-51D with a Hasegawa Lear Jet wing and an Airfix Seafire 47 nose.

They also sent me a racing Mustang, can't remember the name offhand but it's the one highly polished with SubLime Green wings. Never got around to nailing that one together.
Snake45 Posted September 12, 2014 Author Posted September 12, 2014 Precious Metal. Griffon engine Mustang. Yeah, that's the one. One big deterrent to my building it is that I can't decide which would be less difficult--shooting the high-gloss SubLime and then masking it for the polished NMF, or the other way around. I wouldn't mind the construction, but I'm really dreading that paint job.

Just made my semiannual pilgrimage to the hobby shop in the next town, and scored an open, "on consignment" copy of that kit for just $15! I don't think you can buy the Hawk/Testor or Monogram P-51Ds for that anymore! Happy happy joy joy!
