DanR Posted September 12, 2014 Posted September 12, 2014 (edited) Today I completed Revell's Hawaiian Funny Car kit. I'm very happy with the end result. This was a challenging build with several parts fit issues as well as misleading wire lengths called out in the kit instructions. Patience won out in the end and I have a finished model that I am proud to put on the shelf. The project is a bit bittersweet for me. The first car kit that I can ever remember building was a 1/16 Revell FC kit that my father bought for me when I was maybe 8. It was unpainted, a total glue bomb, but it was fun and it was probably the kit that eventually set me on this crazy path of building scale cars. My father passed away in April, right around the time the kit hit the shelves. I felt compelled to build it and to build it right. Partly for the recreation of a great childhood memory, and partly I suppose as a tribute to a great, fun, creative guy who I miss just about every day of my life... Edited September 12, 2014 by DanR
majel Posted September 12, 2014 Posted September 12, 2014 Beautiful looking model, sorry about the loss of your dad, it's tough to lose your parents regardless of their or your age. You have a wonderful model and a great story to go with it.
DanR Posted September 12, 2014 Author Posted September 12, 2014 Thanks Jim. He was a good man and had a relatively long life. Diabetes probably robbed him off 5-10 more years, but I'm grateful for the time I had! Ironically, he wouldn't appreciate the finished model. He got me into modeling, but he always saw it as a creative diversion. I turned it into an obsession.
F/CNUT Posted September 12, 2014 Posted September 12, 2014 (edited) What a nice looking model. Excellent work. What color blue did you use? I'am sorry for your loss. Edited September 12, 2014 by F/CNUT
ferrarijoe Posted September 13, 2014 Posted September 13, 2014 Great tribute build, sorry for your loss.
DanR Posted September 13, 2014 Author Posted September 13, 2014 Stephen, the color is Tamiya's Metallic Blue straight from the can.
AZ Boy Posted September 13, 2014 Posted September 13, 2014 Very nice build, Dan. Your Dad would be proud.
Jade043 Posted September 13, 2014 Posted September 13, 2014 Very nice! Like the detail on the engine.
OldTimer50707 Posted September 13, 2014 Posted September 13, 2014 Beautiful car. Sorry about your loss.
Nitrozilla Posted September 13, 2014 Posted September 13, 2014 Your father truly was a role model. Your build is beautiful and an awesome monument to a great relationship. I'm almost done with mine after a break away from it, so I empathize with you on the kit's shortcomings. Revell can do better.
bob terry Posted September 14, 2014 Posted September 14, 2014 If I may ask, Did you raise the rear axle or is this straight out of the box. Nice build by the way.
Mooneyzs Posted September 14, 2014 Posted September 14, 2014 This is one beautiful build. It turned out very nice. I think that it is so cool this was the first model your dad bought for you. He would be very proud of you on this one. I have no doubts that he is smiling looking down at you saying "Job well done son"
DanR Posted September 14, 2014 Author Posted September 14, 2014 Bob Terry, I made no modifications to the axle. It's a straight, out of the box build. And thanks again everyone for all the nice comments!
w451973 Posted September 15, 2014 Posted September 15, 2014 Sorry about your loss Dan. I'm sure your father would be very proud if he could see the excellent job you did on this one.
F/CNUT Posted September 15, 2014 Posted September 15, 2014 Dan, Thanks for info on the paint color. It looks almost like True Blue.
DanR Posted September 16, 2014 Author Posted September 16, 2014 Stephen, I sprayed it over a silver base coat. I think it looks good when compared against pics I've seen.
