charliechaindrive Posted September 13, 2014 Posted September 13, 2014 Hey my name is Charlie. I'm 17 and from Minnesota, which means during the winter months I've got lots of time to work on my models I've been building kits for about 3or 4 months now. I found this forum last week and I've been lurking around looking at the amazing build quality of some of the other members, and I can tell I've got a long way to go. So far I've built the revell '50 olds, Revell '70 dodge challenger T/A, and the revell '78 Pontiac trans am. I also built a Sox and Martin '67 GTX as a stock muscle car, and painted it exactly like my dad's full size '67. I'll take some more pictures and post them. For now all I think I've got is one picture of the trans am. Sorry about the messy background, I'll set up my shelf to take pictures on soon. Charlie
StevenGuthmiller Posted September 13, 2014 Posted September 13, 2014 Welcome Charlie! From a fellow Minnesotan! Steve
charliechaindrive Posted September 14, 2014 Author Posted September 14, 2014 Thanks for the welcome! Steven, you're not too far down the road from me, hour or two's drive. I'll take some pictures of my models and upload them in about 15 minutes. I'm still amazed at how you more skilled individuals get your window trim painted on without getting paint on the body..
charliechaindrive Posted September 14, 2014 Author Posted September 14, 2014 (edited) After a battle with my kindle to get my photos to upload, here's a few pictures. I did some kit bashing between the GTX and the challenger, I traded engines, tires and decals to make the GTX close to my dad's car (he swapped a mild built 360 in opposed to the stock 440) so I put the 340-6 pack in the GTX, and the 426 HEMI in the challenger. Easy transplant, only problem is that the 340 is taller than the 426, so I couldn't get the air filter body on and still have the hood close. I wired both the 340 and the 426, I think I wired the 426 correctly to full scale, but the 340 I might've done wrong I used decals out of the GTX kit and my 78 trans am to make the challenger pop a bit more. And here's my '50 olds which I chopped a scale 3 or 4 inches out of. It was a half-as$ chop, I just cut a section of roof out and layed the windshield frame and rear window down to meet, then cemented them back together and filled with bondo. I'd like to get a new kit and redo it with a better and more severe chop, but I'm happy with the way this one looks. Here's the GTX, and for this one I built it as a stock(ish) car. Full exhaust, hemi H pipe on a small block, and I traded the tires with the challenger as well. If I could find a pair of hood scoops like my dad's GTX has, I'd love to put them on. I want to get better at painting trim before I add the side trim, and I need to find one of the door handles I lost on the floor... And finally, here's the trans am done up as the Smokey and the bandit car. I'm a big mopar fan, but I'd call the trans am one of the few GM products I'd like to own. This kit went together nice, except for the fact that the shaker scoop sits too low to the hood that it doesn't even actually protrude. Oh well, it's good enough for me. And that's about all I've done for the last three months. I'm buying a '56 ford pickup kit from a friend, And I'm looking forward to doing my first truck kit. I don't have very many paint colors though, just black, red, silver, yellow and white. I think the ford would look cool patina'd and rat-rodded, but I haven't ever done a rust paint job before. So hopefully after I read through a few tutorials on here I'll be Able to get a decent rust job going. Charlie Edited September 14, 2014 by charliechaindrive
chunkypeanutbutter Posted September 14, 2014 Posted September 14, 2014 Rust is easy! It's fun, too! You just have to get a few different colors of brown. First, I take a medium, like dirt, brown and make a big splotch with it. Then, take a brush and put a little dark brown paint on it and feather it on. Always keep some reference pictures around to make it come out as best you can.
charliechaindrive Posted September 14, 2014 Author Posted September 14, 2014 Thanks for the tip miles! I'll have to browse craigslist for a real '56 to see where rust realistically forms on one. Minnesota is notorious for overuse of road salt in the winter, so it's not difficult to get an idea of where the rust would form.
TFchronos Posted September 14, 2014 Posted September 14, 2014 Welcome to the forum Charlie, great looking models too.

I haven't painted window trim in more than 20 years Charlie. Most everybody uses "Bare Metal Foil" or something similar for their chrome trim these days. Steve
StevenGuthmiller Posted September 14, 2014 Posted September 14, 2014 I'm suprised the '67 GTX kit didn't come with the scoops Charlie. Mine did. I built this one probably 10-12 years ago. I'll bet some one on the forums has a set. Just ask & they'll probably be happy to send them to you. Steve
D. Battista Posted September 14, 2014 Posted September 14, 2014 Hello Charlie, and welcome to the forum...! Great to see youngsters getting into the hobby, and building models..! We all started with the first one... and looks like you're doing a good job..! The more you build, your skills and knowledge will get better. I have learned so much more of "what not to do" in building models through the years, than "what to do". Keep up the good work and have fun building...!
charliechaindrive Posted September 15, 2014 Author Posted September 15, 2014 Thanks guys! I've seen bare metal foil abbreviated as BMF on here before and the acronym kind of confused me, so thanks for the explanation. I'll half to see about were it's available, because I don't have a hobby shop near by for speciality stuff. I buy my kits from the hardware store or from the local walmart. I think it's kind of surprising that walmart has as many kits as they do, but they're mostly mustang's and camaro's. I'll post in the wanted section for the GTX hood scoops, the kit came with the single large scoop for the Sox&Martin car, but I'm planning on using that scoop to build a '68 charger to look like the General mayhem from roadkill on YouTube.

A good place to look for kits, paint & supplies is Hobby Lobby if you happen to have one nearby. There are no hobby shops in my town either Charlie, so whatever I can't get at Hobby Lobby, I have to get online. Not always the cheapest way with shipping costs & all, but you don't always have the options. There are a lot of good model supply sites online that carry everything you'll ever need. I buy a lot of my stuff from "Model Roundup". Just google it. There are many others & some of the people on the forums may have some good places for you to check out. Just ask around! Steve

Steve Thanks Steve, I'll check out model roundup. I don't have a hobby lobby close unfortunately, closest I've found is a few hour's drive away. I can't easily order stuff off line, but I'll probably have to figure out a way to do that so I can get stuff from model roundup.
