NYC taxis used to always have them.I think the Checkers were built with them.Now as far as I know,they're illegal in NY,but I could be wrong.

I didn't need a necker knob to do damage to myself.  My '65 Barracuda had this steering wheel without power steering.  Upon turning, the recoil of this wheel.. those metal spokes HURT!  when a finger got in it's way.  In fact I lost a pinkie nail that never grew back correctly!

After being involved and hurt in an auto accident back in the 60's I bought a new car, and when I got it home I discovered it didn't have power steering. We (dad & I ) went back the next day and argued with the dealer. I thought that my dad was gonna rip his head off. They installed power steering at no charge if I recall.

You know there are shops that can repair your steering wheel. I can see how that could rip your hands to shreds very easily.
