I have done my share models over my years (26) but they all have been box stock and after lurking around here (I want more!)

I just picked up a 60 Impala hardtop the I want to build. Now I have a couple of questions.

I bought some pegius wire wheels to go on the car but the wheels I got look like they use the metal rod for mounting and the wheels in the kit just snap inplace. How do you guys go about mounting them?

Next I bought a DetailMasters Dizzy and wires. ( I have only done one before a few weeks ago and it turned out fair, but that was on the newest merc kit) the Impala has the 409 in it and I'm not sure where to drill the holes for the plug wires.

keep in mind I have limited tools, and Im working on this problem.......

So I was hoping for so pointers and pics on how to do some of this stuff

Thanks,

Todd, I can't help you with the wheels since I've never used them, but I have built a 348/409 in the past. Here's a pic I have of a 348 out of a '58 Chevy..................externally they're pretty much the same as the later 409 'cept for air cleaners and maybe some carb options.

Hope this helps.........The ignition wires are pretty visible in this shot.

There's guys out there I'm sure that can chime in on the wheels sooner or later. ;)

Does that line from the middle carb attach to the manifold?

Thanks

Yup! That was for the choke so that when the engine warmed up it would close properly..............At least until the carburetor got all gummed up back in those days! ;)

Here's my take on that engine I built years ago.........it's from AMT's '58 Impala kit...............

is that the one with the working windows that I seen on youtube or somewhere? If so you are the man!!!!

The pics will help alot, I won't go that far but I might add a few of those hoses and lines.

Do you have any pointers for me to help make the dizzy and wires look alittle better when I did my first one I followed the instructions but the plug ends just don't look right.......?

Yes, that's the one!

As far as adding detail to the wires, I cut off pieces of larger wire insulation to simulate plug boots on the ends. I did this both for the distributor end and the spark plug end. I got the vacuum advance mechanism on the side I believe from Norm Veber of Replica and Miniatures of MD. I simply drilled a hole in it, and ran a line from it to the center carb.

The distributor itself came pre drilled and also sold by Norm. You'll still have to carefully add the wiring though. Norm sells these in 6 and 8 cylinder types.

You'll have to play around with what size insulation suits your particular wiring.

I believe got the wiring from Detail Master, but I don't look at sizes for any particular application................I go with whatever looks "in scale".

To add to what Bill said...if you use the Reps and Mins distributor get some wrapping wire from radio Shack. It comes in white blue and red but you can make them black using a Sharpie marker or paint. The wire is 30 AWG. For plug boots I snip some insulation off of some phone wire which is 26 AWG. Here's a pic of a 409 I did for a community build of a '61 Impala...

thanks again guys.

Is there anybody that can help me with my problem with wheels?

no problem just glue them on. Modify the kit wheel mount as necessary: shorten mounting pin and or drill mounting hole in wheel to correct size and glue those suckers on.

That is what I had been thinking, but I thought you guys might have something else.

I tried finding some threads on these kits and haven't had any luck........ I put one together a long time ago and thought it went together real well right out of the box.

Does anyone have any build pics out there?
