prestonlal Posted February 8, 2016 Author Posted February 8, 2016 Hey guys, small :update:.... Managed to get in some Sandman time tonight while everyone was focused on the Super Bowl...:lol:Easier to spot the areas that need leveling out now as well as areas that need more styrene work and putty... The paint booth works a treat! Was able to paint in the apartment with the fumes filtered and vented out the window.. will leave the body alone for a day or so for the primer to cure properly then will do some wet sanding and then some puttying and more sanding...still have some more tidying up to do around the tailgate frame, but that will be done when the roof is attached.Still trying to decide what calor to paint the tray and the inside of the roof and rear panels. The Sandman panel vans rear interior apparently were initially painted a light grey, almost white, at the factory... But not sure that I want that color. The outside will be done in Tamiya Metallic Orange, so need to get a color for the interior that will go with that...:thinking:Once I get the rear interior painted, I will attach the roof, then install the side moldings with the drainage area and get the tailgate area sorted, then start prepping for paint... Anywho...some pics...Watcha think?
GTJUNIOR Posted February 9, 2016 Posted February 9, 2016 Looking good. Awesome scratch building you have done on this one. Can't wait to see it done.

cobraman Posted February 10, 2016 Posted February 10, 2016 When you going to squirt some color on that thing ?
prestonlal Posted February 11, 2016 Author Posted February 11, 2016 When you going to squirt some color on that thing ? lol..! Hopefully be next weekend... Got a bit of wet sanding, puttying, priming to do.....then some more again until I no longer see the spots that are bugging me...
prestonlal Posted February 18, 2016 Author Posted February 18, 2016 nothing to fancy...just wanted to make it functional without modding the back frame too much... the string will be painted silver to simulate a steel cable (I'm hoping...lol) and I'll crazy glue the tailgate end like a loop instead of that big ole knot..ha! Didn't get chance to wet sand last night so will do that tonight and still try to get the painting done... Some pics...
prestonlal Posted February 20, 2016 Author Posted February 20, 2016 Hey thanks vintagercr ! More to come soon!
prestonlal Posted February 20, 2016 Author Posted February 20, 2016 Hey guys, another small update...kinda! So...Thursday night I got home all prepared to start painting the rear interior...wet sanded the inner roof and the tray and inner sides...dried it off properly etc...hooked up the paint booth then I realized I needed to paint the underside of the body first as it's going in black...No problem...I got some satin black Krylon paint :nice: lemme just grab some painters tape and tape off so I don't get back black overspray everywhere...No more painters tape.. so packed it all back up... Picked up the tape last night after work...and got this done...
prestonlal Posted February 20, 2016 Author Posted February 20, 2016 so while the black was drying I decided to paint the inside of the roof panel.... And like a noob I forgot to test spray on some scrap to see what the paint actually looks like....This is rustoleum high gloss khaki....thinking now that I shouldn't have gone with high gloss..:banghead:..... It went on pretty thickly... And I'm glad that I did this piece before actually doing the tray and sides... I don't want it too thick that it hides the detail lines and whenever I look at it, I'm thinking it's too glossy for the inside ....I'm not sure how to 'dull' it down...certainly don't want to sand it as will probably be uneven in spots that I can't reach... Will try to get some daylight pics...maybe it will seem better to me then...
prestonlal Posted February 20, 2016 Author Posted February 20, 2016 I have this Tamiya Light Sand that I picked up to do the dashboard, door cards and center console...I may use it to do the tray as it's pretty close to the rustoleum khaki (at least judging by the cap color)... But will have to get a different shade for the dash and other pieces if I do.... What do you guys think?
Zoom Posted February 21, 2016 Posted February 21, 2016 I have look through your thread and I must say you are doing a fantastic job. Keep it coming.
prestonlal Posted February 22, 2016 Author Posted February 22, 2016 Hey guys...another small update.... Another step closer...:nice: once it's dried properly I will attach the roof and move on to the next step... Watcha think?
prestonlal Posted February 22, 2016 Author Posted February 22, 2016 Thanks Jim ! More to come soon.....!
prestonlal Posted February 24, 2016 Author Posted February 24, 2016 Looks real !thanks guys! Will try to have another update soon!
prestonlal Posted February 26, 2016 Author Posted February 26, 2016 Hey guys, got the roof attached....working on getting the side moldings installed....wasn't gonna post till it was completed.... BUT the pulley kit came in tonight....!! I assembled it and just had to share it! ...looks pretty sweet! The pulleys do spin, but on bushings...:(. Don't think it was designed for bearings, which would have been awesome...Got lotsa room for a fan as well! Anywho.....some pics....Watcha think?
Shambles77 Posted March 15, 2016 Posted March 15, 2016 Gday mate. The work you have done is awesome. My old man had a crappy hx ute that was good to get up to no good in but thats it. haha. Was just wondering, with the incredible detail you have done in the back with the paneling and wall ribs are you going to line the inside of the bonnet with bracing like real deal?
prestonlal Posted March 18, 2016 Author Posted March 18, 2016 (edited) Gday mate. The work you have done is awesome. Was just wondering, with the incredible detail you have done in the back with the paneling and wall ribs are you going to line the inside of the bonnet with bracing like real deal? Hey thanks Shambles! Actually this is what I have planned for it! I initially made the bracing out of styrene, but was worried about gluing it to the underside of the hood, as the styrene tends to show the glue tracks through the top pieces. So I made a mold of it and cast it in silicone rubber.....lol Edited March 18, 2016 by prestonlal
prestonlal Posted April 1, 2016 Author Posted April 1, 2016 Hey guys... After 4 long weeks, the polyester putty finally arrived couple nights ago... so....an update! Getting there with the roof...got the side moldings done and installed the drip rails...tidied it up some...also got the tailgate frame sorted and also installed the drip rail there...gonna shoot some primer on the roof tonight, if I can get it done early enough, I might be able to do some wet sanding to find the high and low spots. I'm hoping it will require spot putty only and not more filler...ha! But if it does, well another couple of days...gonna have to figure out how I'm masking off the rear interior before priming as well... Anywho....some pics..
