KJ790 Posted November 19, 2014 Posted November 19, 2014 I decided to try my hand at building a Utility reefer rather than a Great Dane. The Great Dane reefer does share a lot in common with the Utility version, so the Moebeus Great Dane reefer was an obvious place to start. First thing I did was made a Carrier refrigeration unit to replace the Thermo King that comes with the kit: More to come soon.
gotnitro? Posted November 19, 2014 Posted November 19, 2014 Looks good so far! Good choice for the Carrier unit They were manufacturered not far from us
kilrathy10 Posted November 21, 2014 Posted November 21, 2014 (edited) Looks great, so far.....I agree that the Utility's and the GD's are almost identical....I really have to get close and look for the logos to tell them apart....Great idea....I'm about to get onto a GD, myself.....Without the refer, this time and with aero skirts.....I'll be starting that middle of next week.....I'll be watching this one, though, for sure..... These are really a great kit, this is the second one that I am building (I kept the other one as a Great Dane though). I'll keep an eye out for your build, the side skirts will look great on it. Let me know if you want some super single tires to go along with it: http://kdhumphr.wix.com/double-take-replicas#!super-single-tire/cox2 You need to cast this. I already have, this piece is actually a resin cast piece. I need to add a little draft angle to the fins so that it comes out of the mold easier. On the third piece I damaged the mold, so now I am adjusting the master and will remold it. I will have it available through my website soon.
chuckyr Posted November 22, 2014 Posted November 22, 2014 Well you are up there in the home of Carrier. Go Orangemen!
KJ790 Posted November 22, 2014 Author Posted November 22, 2014 Well you are up there in the home of Carrier. Go Orangemen! Yup, they levelled the old carrier plant and turned it into a park a couple years ago. Everything is made outside of the US nowadays. I got a little more work done today, made a set of rear doors for it. I went with some diamond pleating, and of course the signature Utility off-center door cams.

Mackvision Posted November 22, 2014 Posted November 22, 2014 Are you going to make those quilted doors available? my Dads 1:1 Utility reefer was so equipped, have'nt figured out any way to scratchbuild them yet!........................................Mark
kilrathy10 Posted November 23, 2014 Posted November 23, 2014 Great job on the doors, Man....I might just have to borrow that idea....I just finished cutting a race trailer a little bit ago, and it's time to clean off the bench and get on it....

KJ790 Posted November 23, 2014 Author Posted November 23, 2014 I've seen Jamie Groeneweg's models before, he does amazing work. Especially considering that this picture is a 1/87 scale model! Making the quilted doors from scratch is not too difficult. I use styrene sheet that has a tile pattern on it, then cut it at a 45 degree angle so that the pattern will look like diamonds. Once I finish the doors I use bare metal foil and scrub it with a toothbrush to get the foil down in all of the spaces between the diamonds. I did the same thing on my great dane and it worked out really nicely:
KJ790 Posted December 9, 2014 Author Posted December 9, 2014 My post from the other day got lost when the site crashed, so here is the update again. Finished the wheels and tires:
KJ790 Posted December 27, 2014 Author Posted December 27, 2014 (edited) It's starting to look like a trailer! I scratch built the landing gear to be more Utility-ish. I also added some light weathering to make it look like it has just finished pulling it's first couple loads. I still have to finish up the details on the front and add all of the marker lights. Thanks. I don't have the reefer on the front yet. I'm still working the front end to make it more like a Utility. I'm hoping to have it done in the next day or two. I still have to finish the front and get all the marker lights on.
kilrathy10 Posted December 28, 2014 Posted December 28, 2014 Sweet.....No hurry, though..... Just thought you had done that part, already.....
KJ790 Posted December 28, 2014 Author Posted December 28, 2014 Got an early start today and made a lot of progress on the front end. I still need to finish a few marker lights, but it's almost done!
Mopar - D Posted December 28, 2014 Posted December 28, 2014 Nice conversion and I've booked makes your site I've got some future projects that I will be needing some of your products.
Petetrucker07 Posted December 28, 2014 Posted December 28, 2014 Lookin good Kurt. What truck you gonna put under it.
KJ790 Posted December 28, 2014 Author Posted December 28, 2014 I'm hoping to build a Freightliner Columbia or Century to go with it. Maybe a Cascadia if I can figure out how to make the shape of the cab look right.
kilrathy10 Posted December 28, 2014 Posted December 28, 2014 You are ambitious, I'll say that.....I'd love to see a Cascadia, for sure....The Prostar and the Cascadia seem to be the more common fleet rigs out, these days, down here.....
Petetrucker07 Posted December 28, 2014 Posted December 28, 2014 Across the board JT. There are a few like Celadon that bought some cool trucks, Lonestars and T680s.
kilrathy10 Posted December 28, 2014 Posted December 28, 2014 Yeah, them T 660's 80's are awesome looking.....
