dub Posted January 27, 2008 Posted January 27, 2008 Our fictional 1:1 builder here is a dry lakes racer from sourthern Cali. around 1950-5. One day while out at an aviation junkyard looking for belly tanks, he stumbles across a stock 29 Model A roadster painted olive drab with a star on each door. He thinks it must have belonged to a general in the past and decides it would make a cool hotrod. He drags it home and locates a yard with a 32 V8 engine. When he comes home this time he brings home the engine, tranny, grille assembly with rad, and a set of wire wheels. After a few weekends he's running around town with this creation: I hope you guys enjoy it as much as I enjoyed building it! These rods are just too fun and I can't stop building them. This one just fell together. Every time I worked on it, more got done. I will definitely be doing more rod builds for a while. Parts list: Body, interior and windshield are from the 60s issue AMT 29 Roadster gluebomb; frame and suspension are Revell's 31 tudor; engine, grille assy., wheels and tires, steering wheel and exhaust are from AMT's 32 Vicky; tail lights are Revell's new 32 sedan; and headlights are Revell's 32 3-window.
ajulia Posted January 27, 2008 Posted January 27, 2008 Hello there friend! Just wanted to say excellent weathering! The chassis is my favorite and the worn out interior! The fade on the seats is " Dead-on! Keep on wit the keepin on! Peace Ajulia
Raul_Perez Posted January 27, 2008 Posted January 27, 2008 Very nice, Jonathan!! I really like the wear marks on the seat and the "flow through" ventilation in the firewall!! The weathered frame looks really good, too!! Too bad we can't add soundtracks to our posts...I can almost hear this one running down the road with an occasional misfire from the old V8 in desperate need of a tune-up!! So, what's next?!
Len Geisler Posted January 27, 2008 Posted January 27, 2008 I dig it....There is something to be said for those quicky, rat rod-esque builds.....
dub Posted January 28, 2008 Author Posted January 28, 2008 Thanks guys. This is only my second attempt at weathering. I guess I'm doing better than I thought! So, what's next?! I have two on the bench at the moment, Raul. I think I'm gonna use the frame leftover from this build for another quickie, but I'm not sure. I could get back to work on the 31 Tudor I chopped the top on.... I'll figure it out sooner or later!
cruz Posted January 28, 2008 Posted January 28, 2008 Very cool Jonathan, looks very realistic man, weathering is nicely done too!!!
Raul_Perez Posted January 28, 2008 Posted January 28, 2008 Thanks guys. This is only my second attempt at weathering. I guess I'm doing better than I thought! Weathering is an interesting art in its own right, Jonathon. Most people that try it for the first time tend to over do it. Usually by the time a car would have been out in a field for as long as the weathering implies, there wouldn't be much more than a rusted hulk left rotting in the sun, not a complete car with a fully intact interior. You did well to weather it enough to fit into your storyline without overdoing it. Keep up the good work,
Simon Posted January 28, 2008 Posted January 28, 2008 That's tremendous, a proper rod! I agree on the weathering, I also build military models and although I like to show some wear and tear, I prefer the subtle approach. As your photos show, it pays off.
Gray Smith Posted January 28, 2008 Posted January 28, 2008 (edited) Jonathan, this one turned out great!, nothing like some weathering to make a build just come alive...excellent job bringing this one back from the world of glue bombs, glad to see it done, and good luck on your next one. oh and if you want to go ahead and send it to me..my address is Gray Smith 411 E..... lol Gray Edited January 28, 2008 by stryfe101
Randy Kern Posted January 29, 2008 Posted January 29, 2008 Okay, Jonathan, are you shooting for the Bill Geary of weathering status? That's pretty neat, and the story is believable, too! Sometime down the road, I think a weathering tech session is in order at a club meeting.
dub Posted January 29, 2008 Author Posted January 29, 2008 Thanks again, guys. I guess it's apparent I tinkered around with these pastels in school in art classes. I did more work with charcoal and acrylics but this isn't much different. Gray, that is too funny! I tell you what, when my display case starts to overflow I'll think about it..... Just kidding! This one is a little special to me. You could build yourself a clone..... Seriously, thanks again for all the kind words along the way. Okay, Jonathan, are you shooting for the Bill Geary of weathering status? Awww, come on! That is a bit too much! .....as for the tech session, I'll help with it as long as Dube is there!
theflame Posted February 2, 2008 Posted February 2, 2008 Looks great all finished Johnathan, you did an awesome job of turning around that tired old Roadster you started with. Thanks for letting me feature it on the blog! ( http://automodelling.blogspot.com/2008/01/...9-roadster.html for anyone who didnt see it) Look forward to seeing your next build buddy
