The GMC 302 cubic inch inline 6 was similar to Chevrolet 6-cyl. engines of the period, and was built between 1952 and 1960, if I recall correctly. Though the 302 block is taller and probably longer, in general the Chevy sixes available in 1/24 in the Monogram '53 Corvette kit (a Chevy 235) and the Monogram '53 Chevy kit look much like a 302, and should be a good starting point.

Also the Galaxies Chevies, and the ICM pre-war Opel. I've read that it is a very detailed 3.5 liter (same as Chevy 216 inline 6)

The GMC engine is longer than the Chevrolet, 3 inches IIRC, there's very little that really interchanges between them, other than the distributor and the bellhousing. For modeling purposes, though, the Monogram '53 235 is probably going to the closest to use as a start. The oil pan will need altering, and the filter mounts to the right side of the block near the front of the engine. The rocker cover is also different.

i believe, although I could be wrong, that GMC began their OHV 6's in the 30's, from what was to have been a Buick inline 6 that Buick's management nixed in favor of being exclusively straight 8's. In addition, is not the GMC 6 a 7-main bearing engine, while the Chevy 216/235 sixes had just 5 main bearings (that would account for the difference in length?)

The earlier engine you're thinking of was referred to in the GMC literature as the "Buick Type" engine, and was only used in a 1/2 ton capacity Sedan Delivery that was originally sold as a Buick. Most other GMC light trucks used either a Pontiac or Oldsmobile flathead inline 6. The OHV GMC 6 came out in '39, and does share some engineering with the Buick. It only has 4 mains, same as the Chevy, but has a wider bore spacing. GMC didn't get the 7 bearing inline 6 cylinder until the mid '60s (Chevy truck got that one in '63).
