I was looking for a metallic orange in Tamiya acrylic, but can't find it. Would a base coat of silver and clear orange do the trick? I'd love to see a pic if anyone has done it. I'm trying to get the right color combo for my 57 Chevy build and wanted titanium silver on the roof and metallic orange on the rest. Thoughts? If not, titanium silver on the roof and gun metal metallic gray on the body. Thanks!

tim, if you spray the clear orange over silver base, you will get a nice candy orange effect.....but, by overspraying that combo with Tamiya gloss pearlcoat, you will get a lovely met. finish with candy under it....its truly a great combo....just a thought....the ace..... B)

If you have to have an acrylic, you may want to check out Vallejo's orange metallic paint (P/N 62.043). If you can use a hobby enamel or lacquer, you may have a few more choices.

A few other ways to do it would be to mix the metallic silver and the clear orange, or if you have source for it, Pearl Ex silver or macro pearl powders mixed in the orange to get the color you're after. Either way should work.

Do you have an airbrush? You can get to that color by adding a bright red or red-orange to Testor Turn Signal Amber.

It almost looks like Testors Boyds Pearl Orange, but I don't think that's made anymore.

Richard, I think Tim is trying to stay with Tamiya acrylic, but I do agree with your suggestion. Alternatively, if you can find it, Testors Kiln Red and Boyd Alumacoupe Yellow at a roughly 60/40 mix will come very close, perhaps with a little gold pearl added.

Going with Tamiya, now that I've seen the color that you're after, mixing the Clear Orange with Gold Metallic or a Gold pearl powder might be a better way to go, as there looks to be more of a gold tone to the color.

I think the Tamiya color your looking for is TS-92 Metallic Orange. I just used this on a '57 Ford and loved the way it turned out. Its a one coat type paint and I used Tamiya white primer. You could paint a couple of picnic spoons with white, silver, or gold to see which would give you what your looking for. Another option would be Testors #1831M Fiery Orange. It is a very high metallic almost metal flake like finish. Hope that will help.

The TS-92 is a great paint - this is how it looks straight from the can with a clearcoat. Not quite as rich as in your pic, but some Tamiya clear orange over the top will darken the colour. As suggested, test on a plastic spoon first.

Thanks for the input, fellas. I want to stick with acrylic (Tamiya if possible) for my airbrush to make things a little easier. You guys have given me some good ideas to try out. Thanks!
