I just eyeballed the size from the bolts on the back plate. @ truckabilly-Thanks for the shots of the real deal...guess the kit ones were pretty close! yeah, I like the hex style much better. @Tbill- Thanks !! The welds are simple to create..learned the trick from a few armor modelers..typical " rivet counters" !! even if ya mess em up..they still look good !! The bolt details are available in several types, and al of them could be used for future builds. Take a section of "tree" from any kit..some "melt" better than others. The moebius sprue was one that took more time to work..and looked "stringy" . warm it over a candle..or lighter and pull gently. The more ya pull, the finer it will be, or break !lol !. Cut a section for the weld, tack with liquid glue. After a few seconds apply more glue, and lightly press into it with your knife tip..the broken tips work great! I used a small file point for the wrecker..I wanted a fatter weld. Practice on glue bomb, its really easy, and adds a cool touch! Tip ! The liquid glue doesn't seem to matter..Testors works GREAT but the fat brush is messy. I use Tamiya or Tenex . Hope this helped ..amazing how many areas you'll find that adding welds improves the realism. Edited January 8, 2015 by gotnitro?
Mopar - D Posted January 8, 2015 Posted January 8, 2015 Jeff thanks for sharing this site. I have a future project that these bolts will come in very handy
gotnitro? Posted January 8, 2015 Author Posted January 8, 2015 No problem, that's how modelers help each other out! Noticed I had to remove the flare on the bumper, oops! Sorting out the steps now
gotnitro? Posted January 11, 2015 Author Posted January 11, 2015 (edited) ok...I see my pics are still not posting as advertised. The top pic is the wheel detail, added the valve stem. The next shot is the shortened fuel tank . I simply removed one section , and reassembled. After a soak in the pond, its off to primer. Jeff Edited January 11, 2015 by gotnitro?
gotnitro? Posted January 16, 2015 Author Posted January 16, 2015 Sorry guys, been out of town a couple days working on a machine run off for my employer. Sounds like NY had chilly weather, Charlotte was much better. Waiting on a few parts from Moebius, and the new day cab arrived while I was awol. Jeff
Old Buckaroo Posted January 16, 2015 Posted January 16, 2015 Valve stems Wow that will really make the wheels stand out. I can only echo what the others have said about the bolts and welds , Impressive !
gotnitro? Posted January 16, 2015 Author Posted January 16, 2015 (edited) Thanks, it added a touch of realism to the beautiful moebius wheels. The fun part is adding just enough detail without overdoing it! Edited January 17, 2015 by gotnitro?
Mopar - D Posted January 16, 2015 Posted January 16, 2015 Jeff nice progress those valve stems look great. Can you explain how you made them?
kilrathy10 Posted January 16, 2015 Posted January 16, 2015 Um Hm.....Just a nice piece of engineering going on, here....That hood is looking awesome.....Great job on the wrecker bed, as well....
gotnitro? Posted January 16, 2015 Author Posted January 16, 2015 Your gonna hate me ...it's really that simple! Craft wire, .026 gage . Drill hole thru rim in desired spot from outside rim. I bent a small piece of wire into a 90 , then super glue to rim. All this is hidden inside under tire! After glue sets, bend the stem w tweezers! !! That's it!
Petetrucker07 Posted January 16, 2015 Posted January 16, 2015 Thanks. Sometimes simple makes a big difference.
gotnitro? Posted January 17, 2015 Author Posted January 17, 2015 Glad to share the tip ! Hope everyone finds it useful, and starts adding stems to all their builds! ..I snapped a pic after work of the rim to show the stem, and how its mounted . also the wire I used . The wire measured .020" copper wire. Its found in the jewelery making isle ..hobby lobby, ac moore, etc. Heres a pic showing the stem peaking thru the front wheel.. its sitting right at top dead center.. The front wheel isn't totally correct for the HD edition, but I'm sticking with it. back to the bench..
Petetrucker07 Posted January 17, 2015 Posted January 17, 2015 Im gonna back and add them to all of my builds. That is a way cool tip. Thanks man.
Mopar - D Posted January 17, 2015 Posted January 17, 2015 Jeff thanks for adding part 2. I'm going to have to go over to Hobby Lobby and pick some wire up.
Bennyg Posted January 17, 2015 Posted January 17, 2015 I'm surprised no one has done a harley conversion kit. There is little harley shaped decals in Revell's version of the lonestar. Ben
cargostar Posted January 17, 2015 Posted January 17, 2015 Its coming......can't use the H-D name though..... Great build BTW!!!
Bennyg Posted January 17, 2015 Posted January 17, 2015 Its coming......can't use the H-D name though..... Great build BTW!!! Will keep an eye out. Ben
gotnitro? Posted January 18, 2015 Author Posted January 18, 2015 Thanks everyone! Took a look for one of the Revell lonestar kits...needless to say it's cheaper to print the logos myself.
gotnitro? Posted January 22, 2015 Author Posted January 22, 2015 Its paint time !!! I'm using Tamiya rattle can for the first time, and man is this stuff work great!! The wrecker bed received its silver accent panel, then gloss black . I still have the orange and black pinstriping to add. Today I added the tread plates to the bed that were previously resprayed Alclad Chrome. The interior is painted. The seats were sprayed gunmetal, then semi black centers for accent. I ran a very thin wash of black around the seams to highllight them. The dash has a quick brown wash to show the heat vents, and console details better Back outside , the shorter fuel tank was mounted. I scratched the step mounts from .015" , contoured to the tank..using pics of the 1-1 truck. Gotta finish the tread plates, ran out of black gloss after the acres on the wrecker bed.The exhaust pipes will be aligned once the final cab position is set, and the metal stacks from evil bay arrive~ The driver needs something to stand on right?? Whats a HD edition without the trademark battery box. I scratched out a box from photos , just sheet and a few strips for the details on the face...and yes, the badge. The final shot today..a mockup .I read on others builds, the cowl lip needed minor tweaking for a better hood / cab fit. After lightly sanding the lip, things line up much nicer.Sorry some hood details are missing, their currrently out of town ! Oh yeah !! Thats my new cab from Dave..this one is like glass !! any feeedback or comments welcome.
gotnitro? Posted January 22, 2015 Author Posted January 22, 2015 for discussion only..this is the paint scheme I'm modeling
Superpeterbilt Posted January 22, 2015 Posted January 22, 2015 Very cool indeed..... Those rims on the 1:1 are pretty killer. Exceptional work so far. Im diggin it!
gotnitro? Posted January 22, 2015 Author Posted January 22, 2015 Thanks Terry, I thought about modifying the kit ones , but the slots wouldn't jive. I'm sure someone will have a set eventually, then I'll swap em
