While I can see a difference in the color, I think I only noticed because you had told us about it. It looks great even so!

You are probably right... I just didn't want the, "that's a great build, but the hood is a shade darker." Lol. I know, petty, but...

Hi Tim, what a great build. Man I've had the same issue with a few hoods I've painted, coming out darker on me as well. It happened on My 70 1/2 BM Camaro build. I ended up stripping the hood twice before I got it to cover in the same shade as the body. It turned out I was applying my final coat just a tad heavier than I did on the body. Like I said though, after 2 tries of stripping and respraying it, I finally figured out what I was doing different and got it covered the way I wanted it. I'll say this though, your Stang is looking awesome and I love the color choice you picked for it.

Thanks, Jim! Did you try polishing or buffing more to get it to match the rest of the car? I'm just wondering if it's a lost cause. The OCD in me wants to throw it in denatured alchohol and start over, but I'll keep buffing to see if that works. Fingers crossed!

Hi Tim, I tried about everything you can think of, and in the end I just got over it and repainted it. If I would have done that to start with, I could have saved myself a ton of work and time. Mine, like yours, turned out flawless to start with.... just the wrong shade lol, that's why I tried to save it, but nooooo, the darn thing just wouldn't cooperate with me no matter what I tried, so into the purple pond it went. And the second time it turned out lighter but still too dark, so I had to strip it again. The third time, I kept the body near by, and after each color coat, I gave it a little drying time and then sat it in place, and when I had put just enough coats on to match the body, I stopped and then clear coated it. The nice thing about the hood being the problem, is, It didn't hold me up from the build as I was fixing it.

Jim, that's exactly my thought process on this one. We will see what it looks like all put together, and if I don't like it, I'll throw in it the pond and start over. :D Thanks!

So I've been taking a closer look at the Cobra 289 engine over the last few days and wanted to give it a little more detail so it doesn't feel like its on an island all alone, or stick out like a sore thumb. Here's what I added today, in case the picture aren't good enough.

Added vacuum line from valve cover to carburetor

Added vacuum/line breather line from valve cover to the rear of the intake manifold

Added the fuel line from the fuel pump area (there is no fuel pump in this kit) to the carb

Added the send and receive heater core water lines from the water pump and manifold that will be plugged into the heater core on the firewall

I'm working on the solenoid wiring now, but won't finish it until tomorrow of the weekend. I'm trying to make something that resembles a solenoid so I can hook up the battery, alternator and starter wires. It shouldn't be too hard, but we will see. Not much more detail to add to the engine, at least I think. lol

Here's some update pics:

Nice detail work on the Engine Tim. One thing on the hood issue, just remember if you do go with a respray on it, the clear does tend to deepen the color a little, so you might want to stop your color coats just a tad lighter than the body and then clear it and see if it brings it into a match.

Yep, and since it is clear orange, the more you put, the darker it will be. It was funny though because it seemed like it took 5 good coats of clear orange on the body to get the color I wanted, but less coats on the hood that turned out darker. Strange...

That engine is tops Tim! How'd you get the stand alone engine pics with no background?

Smacked the DSLR on a tripod, put a couple of sheets of photo paper down, setup the lights and then took the pics. After that, I increased the exposure rate to +1 in Photoshop and it lightened the pics up enough to make the white background essentially disappear. If you look at the last pic, at the top, you can see what the background would normally look like if you didn't increase the exposure rate. If you have a good DSLR, you can increase or decrease the exposure rate to compensate for lighting, but I just did it in Photoshop instead. Pretty easy to do, either way.

Thanks, guys! I appreciate all the compliments.

I left one minor detail out that I added tonight. The DIPSTICK! lol Engine is complete now.

Gene - I had to Google Ross Gibson... I don't think mine are anywhere close to those, but I try to add as much detail as possible to make it look realistic. This is the first one that I've went "all-in" on and this should be the standard for me on my future builds. I appreciate the props!

Joe - Thanks! You inspired me with all of the time consuming, nit picky details that an engine has and how much fun it can be to watch it come to fruition.

I got a lot done tonight on the '66 Shelby, but still have some minor things left to do. I was able to get most of the BMF done, windows installed, interior installed, body mounted on chassis, and the water lines connected to the firewall.

Remaining:

Run starter to the solenoid wire

Run alternator to the solenoid wire

Run ground wire to the chassis from the battery

Connect radiator hose

BMF two side-rear windows

Install drivers side mirror

Paint the badges

BMF door handles and locks

Here are a couple of update pics...

Thanks, fellas! I should be able to button it up by Monday. Question is, what model is next? I've been looking around trying to figure that out, but I think I'm going to stay in the muscle car era for a little bit.
