Fabrux Posted January 24, 2015 Posted January 24, 2015 (edited) It has been a long time since I've tinkered with a car (have been building pickups lately) and certainly a while since I've posted a WIP, but I appear to be on a roll this year so here we go. I'm building a pair of '71 Plymouths: a GTX and a Road Runner. Base kits are the Revell/Monogram '71 GTX and the Monogram '71 Satellite. The GTX gets the hood from the Satellite, along with a set of Magnum 500s from the Monogram '70 GTX. The Road Runner gets the Air Grabber hood from the GTX, along with a set of Torq Thrusts from the Monogram '57 Bel Air. The GTX is getting a Hemi from the Monogram '71 Barracuda convertible (air cleaner is from the '70 GTX). And the Road Runner is getting the 440+6 from the GTX. I have on order a set of decals from Firebird Designs that will give me a set of red strobe stripes for the Road Runner as well as the appropriate fender engine decals for both cars and the insert decals for the GTX's hood. Custom Mike Posted January 24, 2015 Posted January 24, 2015 Having owned a '71 340 Road Runner, I'll be watching! I've gotta get the stuff to build a replica someday! Looks like I need a Monogram to start with, because that's the same hood I had!
Can-Con Posted January 24, 2015 Posted January 24, 2015 Hey Chris,, As long as your swapping wheels and using Magnum 500s, I'd suggest using a set from the Monogram '70 Chevelle instead of the ones you have now. They're deeper so look much better. The shallow offset is my main gripe with most Revell/Monogram wheels.

Hey Mike. if you're looking to build a Road Runner as I am, you will need the original issue Satellite kit as it has no body emblems and a plain grille. The later issue GTX has the emblems on the body and grille. The shallow offset is my main gripe with most Revell/Monogram wheels. Hey Steve, I have a couple Chevelles in my stash so I checked the wheels as you suggested. They have the SS emblems in the centre caps and are too small to fit in the tires I'm using...guess I'll have to stick with the ones I have!
FASTBACK340 Posted January 25, 2015 Posted January 25, 2015 After the `68 Barracuda, these are my second favorite Mopar body style! Like whats planned and will be watching!
Fabrux Posted January 25, 2015 Author Posted January 25, 2015 Small update. Detailed/painted the wheels; GTX on top, Road Runner on bottom. I have also separated the exhaust from the rear axle for the Road Runner.
Mopar - D Posted January 25, 2015 Posted January 25, 2015 Wow this is a very interesting build with all the sawpping of parts to get a correct GTX and road runner. I will be following your build.
Fabrux Posted January 29, 2015 Author Posted January 29, 2015 I got a little deflated when painting these a few days ago as the Road Runner's paint did not turn out at all and it is this enjoying a pleasant Super Clean bath. But that's okay; it is going to be painted black anyway so it is easy to visualize. The GTX, on the other hand, is turning out rather well. I was waiting for the paint to set up good and hard so I can start foiling. Have started painting the interior in the mean time. I have also painted both the engines for this cars. At this point, the Mo'fans with the weak stomachs may want to hit 'Back' and stay out of this thread. I've always wanted to see what a Hemi would look like done up in Chrysler turquoise, so here it is! I can see I need to touch up the valve covers a bit. The camera hides nothing!
Bob Ellis Posted January 29, 2015 Posted January 29, 2015 I am curious. Were HEMIs ever painted blue?
Fabrux Posted January 29, 2015 Author Posted January 29, 2015 From what I've been able to find, all 2G Hemis installed in street cars were painted Hemi orange, along with the 440+6. The regular 440 and smaller engines were turquoise. Early Hemis were painted different colours depending on what vehicle they were installed in.

I like what you've done so far. Anxious to see how they turn out.
Fabrux Posted February 1, 2015 Author Posted February 1, 2015 (edited) Well, one half of my pair is done. The Roadrunner still languishes in the bath. I took a shot of the finished interior before I trapped it in: Finished shots: Now on to the Roadrunner! Edited February 1, 2015 by kataranga
drive4th Posted February 1, 2015 Posted February 1, 2015 Niiiice! Suoer clean and great color choice. Keep it up
Mopar - D Posted February 5, 2015 Posted February 5, 2015 GTX looks good in blue looking forward to seeing the black rr.
LMDAVE Posted February 23, 2015 Posted February 23, 2015 I wish the GTX kit had that hood with it. I'm looking to build the same GTX with the same hood swap you used from the monogram kit. Can't even find that satellite kit (2213) available anymore with that hood.
Fabrux Posted February 24, 2015 Author Posted February 24, 2015 The Satellite shows up on the big auction site from time to time.
