drummerdad Posted January 30, 2015 Posted January 30, 2015 Has any one ever offered partial car kits? For example, I like using "factory engines" in some builds. So if I wanted just an ls7, or ls3 or a hemi, or any specific engine, I have to buy the whole kit. I know there are some aftermarket engine kits, and there are a few people casting and 3D printing, but Im talking about offering parts of kits. Are there any kit makers who will sell only certain parts of a kit? Or are there people who can legally cast a specific section only, and make just parts of a kit? I hate buying a full kit (at $25-30 a shot) to use an engine and trans, or wheels, only to have to either store the body, and extra parts, or throw them away. I know about the trading post here, and the wanted section. But it seems it would be beneficial both ways.
Casey Posted January 30, 2015 Posted January 30, 2015 There are some separately available engines from Fujimi(?), but very few, and I can't think of any other "major" kit manufacturers who offer just the engines from their kits. I suggest you buy the kit, then sell whatever is leftover that you don't want. Depending upon the kit, you may actually make a little money after all is said and done.
Longbox55 Posted January 31, 2015 Posted January 31, 2015 I don't know about any hobby shops in your area, but the one I go to has a "scratch and dent" section. They have kits that are missing parts, have damaged boxes/parts, or in some cases, were misboxed. I've gotten some really good deals, usually around $3 a kit, for kits to pick parts from.
av405 Posted January 31, 2015 Posted January 31, 2015 (edited) Well, unless it's that PJ guy on ebay. For what he charges, you might as well just buy the entire kit. I've come to realize that if you post in the "Wanted" section here, you often times get a response, no matter how random the part being requested is. Edited January 31, 2015 by av405
Exotics_Builder Posted January 31, 2015 Posted January 31, 2015 There are resin manufacturers that do some components such as popular engines, transmissions, drive trains, intakes, carbs, etc. Some good ones are VCG Resins, Morgan Automotive Detail, B-N-L resins, Fireball Modelworks, Scenes Unlimited, Replicas and Miniatures of Maryland, etc. Other options are sites like Boneyard; swap meets; model club auctions; etc.

All my items are either grown from 3D models or scratchbuilt. Buying resin recasts of kit parts might seem like a cheap way to enjoy the hobby, but it ultimately hurts the kit manufacturers and makes them unwilling to invest in new and updated tooling.
Casey Posted January 31, 2015 Posted January 31, 2015 This is the kit I was thinking of Dwayne: There are parts pack engines from Revell and AMT (a few of which are currently available), this is the only engine from a kit manufacturer offered separately which I can think of.
Mike_G Posted January 31, 2015 Posted January 31, 2015 The AMT Blueprinter parts pack #8158 has 4 engines (although one is a Corvair) I bought one for $5 at a model fest last year
