Model Cars Magazine Forum

Hi! From Long Island

Recommended Posts

Just wanted to say hi. I just joined this forum today, although I've been lurking around here for a while. I've recent gotten back into the hobby after many years. I'm currently building a 1970 1/2 camaro with an engine swap from a 2013 Camaro ZL1. This is a great hobby, and I can't believe the level of talent on this forum! I'm looking forward to being a part of it!

Welcome to our plastic playground Chris. I'm a transplanted Long Islander now living in western PA just north of Pittsburgh. It just got too expensive to continue living in West Islip, so we moved in November 2006.

If you're looking for a good Model Car Club, try the L.I.A.R.S. Club (Long Island Auto Replica Society) http://www.liarsmodelcarbuilders.com/ I've been a member since 1992 and kept up my membership even after I moved.. They are a great bunch of guys and you'll enjoy it a lot.

Howdy, Chris, and welcome. Like Rich, I am a transplanted LI'er, maintaining my LIARS membership even though we are now in SC. Go to the meetings- you'll not only have a good time, you'll learn a lot and see some quality builds, live and in-person.

Isn't Men at Arms Hobbies still there on 25(Jericho Trnpke) in Middle Island? Cool thread it's like a Lawnguylanduh's reunion!

Yes he's still here but largely war game and military stuff. A very nice fellow but only a few styrene kits; mostly planes. Some materials (brass / styrene) and small stock of paints.

The closest hobby shop to me when I lived there was Bayshore Hobbies on Sunrise Highway. We (in the LIARS Club) called the place Robber Bob's. One of the owners was a guy named Bob who sat on a stool behind the counter and would not move off of that stool. If you asked any questions about something being in stock or not, or when a new model might be coming in, he could never give you an answer. Car kits were stacked to the ceiling on shelves, and also stacked 5 feet high, three deep on the floor in front of the shelves. You couldn't get to anything and Bob wouldn't budge off that stool to help you. While he had a huge selection of kits, paints, tools, glues, aftermarket stuff and magazines, he was sorely lacking in customer service and people skills. The prices were also quite high... hence the name "Robber Bob's".

Perfect description of the hobby shop Richard. When my wife and I would come up from Florida to visit her Mom in Bay Shore(Newbrook Gardens)I would sneak away and stop in the store. I would only buy supplies that would fit in my luggage. There are a TON of kits there. I was always nervous to move them around looking for the one I wanted.

Larry's Hobby in Commack.

Great all around shop, static and a ton of R/C. Lots for the train guys too. Tons of materials and paints.

A robber too but it was like Disneyland for modelers.

You couldn't resist.

So true about Bay Shore Hobbies! It makes me nervous going in there! There is stuff piled from floor to ceiling. The owner does sit behind the counter on a stool and is not all that helpful. If you ask him for a specific part, such as a PE kit or something, he points towards a pile and tells you to look through it. It's a cool place, but definitely needs organization.

I last went to Bay Shore Hobbies during the holidays in 2013. The place was still crammed with stock, a lot of the merchandise was very inaccessible, but at least we were not the only customers- there were several people there. I wonder how many might have been turned off by the disorganization over the years, and how much more would have been sold if a customer could actually see the merchandise.

I think there is a shop in Deer Park called Alsands- not sure, but it might be on Grand Blvd.

Rob, I married a girl from Bay Shore and we lived on Brooklyn Blvd for 29 years, before we left the Island. It is a small world, indeed.

You're right Len. Dave's Hobby's closed some time ago after Dave died. That was another place where new and old kits were stacked up all over the place. Very hard to find anything specific that you were looking for. I worked about a mile or so from there back in the mid 90's.

It does tend to seem that way. I met a good model car club here in Tampa/St. Pete, and we meet at one of the guys houses. When I met his wife, it turns out we'd gone to school together in Bay Shore. :D
