'32 Ford question

Recommended Posts

I've built a 32 Roadster, nice kit if you put some effort into it, but it's not really possible to build a highboy without major surgery.

The 5 window can be built without fenders as it has a chassis and seperate fenders.

The question is can I kit bash the two of these easily to make a highboy Roadster?

The roadster says 1/24, the 5 window is 1/25 but the fenders seem to be the same length.

Thanks for any help guys.

No worries Andy,

It's strange what we get over here, for example, I can't get a rat roaster yet which is out for a while, but I got the new repop of the old Thames panel van Pie Wagon almost as soon as it was listed.

It all adds to the fun :D

The two models are different scale. The Monogram Roadster is 1/24th and the highboy-friendly 5-window 1/25th. So the first think to do is check to see if the roadster body will sit properly on the 5-window kit frame. I no longer have any of these roadsters in my stash or I would have checked it. I once did the conversion to a sort-of highboy, but I did it with a full bellypan so the rear of the frame was hidden, and in fact didn't exist. Perhaps others can share their attempts at a fenderless Monogram roadster. Here is mine, but, again, it doesn't have the visible frame rails that are an essential part of the classic highboy look.

BTW, the older, now discontinued, Revell 1/25th scale Deuce roadster kit trades regularly on eBay US for around $20-25.00 USD before shipping costs. They are quite common. Is this an option worth considering?

Here's my bellypan Monogram roadster. Just about everything you see except the headlights is from the Monogram kit. The tires are the hot rod big 'n' littles from ThePartsBox.com and fit the 1/24th scale Monogram chrome steelies perfectly.:

I don't anticipate the 1/24 body working well over the 1/25 chassis without cutting the siderails loose and fabricating new crossmembers and a new floor. The 1/25 chassis will be noticeably narrower than the 1/24 body from what I remember. The Lil' Coffin is a great chassis for a lowboy conversion, though.

I build a lot of '32 Fords. Yes, you CAN bash the roadster you have with the 5-window frame rails, but you'll have to adjust a few things. The hood on the "1/24" roadster kit is noticeably longer than Revell's "1/25" kits, and the body is a little wider in the 24th roadster than the 1/25 roadster, but if you're not used to seeing a LOT of '32 Fords, you can make a very nice model.

The WIDTH of the roadster body you have is NOT A PROBLEM at all. I have both kits, and I just checked.

Just pay attention to the wheelbase and proportions. You MAY find your model will look better if you cut the FRONT crossmember loose and move it forward a tick, as the 1/24 roadster has a slightly longer wheelbase than the 1/25 kits. naturally.

None of the '32 Ford kits are particularly well-scaled, but they're ALL in the ballpark, close enough to mix-and-match.

Do thorough mockups to get the "look' you want BEFORE you start gluing...just like we do on the real ones. B)
