att. Revell... 1/16 drag racing modelers need your attention!

Decal Art

Recommended Posts

Hello drag racing modelers!...

I'm Art Loveland a participant for quite a few years in resin drag race modeling and decal art...many know me simply as Chilidog...lol..I thought it highly important that an issue come to light among our daily traffic here. 1/16 model car building is for the most part a vanishing craft.

Please take the time to read this worthwhile attempt to resurrect interest and participation....

We need another 70's 1/16 funny car kit re-popped badly from Revell or the aftermarket prodcucers to re-pop the old Aurora kit....

I don't care which but the Gene Snow Vega, Jungle Jim Vega or Prudhomme Army Vega would be the logical chioces. There would be a ton of cars that could be done off of those bodies with an amazing quality Chuck Boerner decal. The resin aftermarket already supplies the conversions for 73-74 Vega swaps in resin so it wouldn't matter what kit they chose to do! I think if they did re-pop a 1/16 funny, (which is in my opinion they probably won't again because of price expense of the larger kits and demand), it would most likely be the Mongoo$e Duster, because Revell is on a roll with Tom McEwen. We really need to take advantage of this, because Tom has been so supportive. He's really getting quite elderly, so times running out guys....Seaze the opportunity now!!!!!...I know that sounds terrible, but with all respect to him it's true..(he's been the only guy in recent years that's really helped push the 70's drag racing model car hobby from within the drag racing celebrity realm). Revell most likely will never respond if we do not have people from within helping us promote.. The Charger or M/T Grand Am is just OK, because we need a chassis badly for the resin body aftermarket..If you dig the Grand Am, fine,... but how many cars can you build with that body??? 4 maybe?? Not a lot of flexibility for collectors there....Don't get me wrong, I'm not griping if they do the Grand Am again....just so we have a 1/16 F/C chassis to work with for the resin body market! Greg Fox,(one of a handful of 1/16 resin body makers), need our backing or this 1/16 70's F/C thing will surely die in a few short years.....

Any of the 1/16 RE diggers will do as they're nearly the same kit with the front wing and a few details on the engine being the exception. Last but not least they could re-pop the FE rail...any car would do. The resin aftermarket could supply the detail swaps.

We truly need a revival in 1/16 70's kits or support in the aftermarket or it's done folks,

let's face it .....

The expense would come down a little as well,.... maybe $20-$50 per build just based on the fact that we would be skipping the Evilbay middleman collector prices of these kits...which is absolutely rediculas to say the least. Collector price explosion is just killing us!!!! These things jumped $40 in 1 year!!!! Horrible....It's money in OUR pocket to take the time to beat Revell's door down again and get this stuff going...Will they listen?huh.gif...probably not...but I for one am not going down without a fight... and (with all due respect, mind you), if you care about this crazy 1/16 hobby, you shouldn't either. Act now guys!!! Contact Revell as I intend to again...Get out your signs and walkin' shoes geezers it's time to march!!!...well just kiddin', but I can't stress our participation enough.

Well, theres my take...If you don't like 1/16 you probably wouldn't care,.... No complaints for the folks who build in 1/25, we need those kits too and I highly support their needs, but I personally will never build in the small scale again...I'm getting too old to build the small stuff because of my hands and eyes. The kits are much easier to detail.....Not only that guys,...these things are just soooo cool when completed!!!!...their large size just looks impressive.

....if you would like to talk 1/16 drag modeling give me a call at 1-765-675-4109...I'll get you in contact with the right people to start your builds with aftermarket parts/decals...or heck we'll just gab about it. We need more 1/16 modelers!!!! I'll do everything I can to help you out.

Whew...that's a lot of typing....But someone needed to speak up again guys and well....I just did...Am I just beating a dead dog here??? Chime in....

Thanks,

Godspeed in modeling....Art 'Chilidog' Loveland

I would personally love to see a re-pop of a 1/16 scale FC or FED. Like you, body is not that important to me. I have a 1/16 Fiat body collecting dust on the shelf just waiting for a kit for the chassis and engine. I just can't bring myself to EvilBay one though. It appears to me there is a sort of resurrgence in 1/16" scale just from the newer threads here on the forum. Seems that if enough builders contact the right manufacturers we might make the difference.

you sould try sending your post to Don Prudhomme Snake racing on facebook. He has been posting a lot of cool pics of the old drag cars he also has some cool pics of his old funny cars and haulers. I have hinted to him about makeing the trucks and funny cars in a 1/24 1/25 model.

I wish they would re pop some of these kits also I have a few but for what I had to pay for them I'm just not ready to build them

Coming aboard captin! I agree will ever post here. I enjoy building 1/16th scale and the 1/16th scale yahoo group is great on formation and some really talent model builds as well. I held off on building some projects because it's hard to find donor kits and like the name says it all "EVIL BAY" I need my money thank you. Would love to see some FED kits! Also F/C kits! Man, I remember being a kid and looking at the aurora kits my cousin would build, WOW!! I even have some of those kits/parts and let me say I have open everyone of them and used parts or casted parts for my own use. I look at it this way, why have them if your not gonna use them

Hell, Revell just pump out kits and we will come!

Hey Art.... count me in as another that is very interested in seeing more 1/16 scale stuff. as you can tell from my 1/16 Army Vega build. i would be interested in talking to you more on this. i would love to see revell bring back a early 70's/80's funny car al lthough i think they need to retool and makes changes so its a little more accurate.

besides my 1/16th scale funny car build right.now i also have a 1/16th scale FED thatvis super close to being done.. then next ob my list is a 1/16th scale "secret project" (not ready to say until funny car is almost done)'. 1/16th scale Fiat Altered, 1/16th scale injected 392 FED & a 1/16th scale Pro Mod.... just a little on my plate to bite off lol

I'm in as well. I have a few of the Revell kits and an Aurora VooDo Vega, but I wouldn't mind them bringing them back. The Bebe and Mulligan FE digger was the last one released. The molds are there for sure.

I build mostly in 1/24/25 but I also dig the larger scales. I know the aftermarket stuff is there already.

I'm on board as well.

OK guys all these responses are just fantastic!....All you guys ( Brad, Jason Chris, Michael, and others), I've got something of great news rolling here that many of us may be very happy to hear concerning a limited run with Dave Burket Model King, Revell, the Legend Tom McEwen himself (Whom by the way is celebrating his birthday) and funny car great JIm White a consistent negotiator with Revell on the Navy Mongoo$e 1/16 stuff.....Pray/cross your figures ie: (cross you eyes ect)/....we may have something hot going on here. I'll be back tomorrow as I know more.... By the way Chjris ...as you already know I'm diggin that Prudhomme Army car...Guys give me a call or contact me to give me some encouragement...1-765-675-4109...lets talk about it or just chime in here....1/16 Modelers need our support!!!!!!

OK guys it's Chili again...I'm talking with Dave Burket today again to find out what happened and where he got with Mr.McEwen and Jim White....I have the go ahead from him to kind of be his voice in the E-groups both in racing/ circles, circle of aftermarket and forums like here....to drum up interest in this venture and tell the guys to spread it everywhere by word of mouth of his intent to take interest in working with Revell on a deal that would give him rights to sell these re-popped kits under the Model King label and distribution with Revell as mfg. on a limited run he would purchase at wholesale...Much will happen behind the scenes and I will keep you guys informed on issues that all parties involved feel comfortable in sharing with the public...some things involved in talks may not be available to us if Dave, JIm, Tom and Revell choose for this info not to be known at any given time, but I do know that so far everyone involved seem very positive and encouraged that a few thousand of these kits would move in a reasonable timeframe.....

I can you this already:

A. Model King would purchase a set amount of kits at wholesale(similar to the Jungle Jim and Hawaiian F/C deal that was done a few years back (w/ variances partaining to this particular set of negotiations with all parties involved).

B. Revell and Model King would be in contact with Mr. McEwen to work out particulars pertaining to licencing ect...

C. At this time, NO possible timelines have been set and a production number hasn't been set either...( however Dave at model King did indicate a negotiable amount starting at about 3000 kits), but nothing is set in stone....

D. Mr. McEwen and his rep. Jim White would love to see this done with Revell and/or Revell and Model King together.

E. Dave at Model King is pumped as I am that we can complete together with very few snags a workable partnership with Revell and it's reps. ...he has had experience working with Revell on previous ventures and they worked out something in a very workable period of time between breaking ground and completing a complete deal.

F. WE AS MODELERS WILL ULTIMATELY DETERMINE HOW SUCCESSFUL THIS VENTURE WILL BE BY SHOWING AN INTENT TO BUY THIS STUFF......our paricipation is extremely important!

G. We want to know your input!!!!....(ie. what does the modeling public expect in a quality drag racing kit),..such as the look of the box, Do you want a McEewen collector card in or on the box?...little things like that.

H. Dave himself is very interested in the aftermarket and whatever our thoughtts would be concerning how we can move more of these kits will be considered.

I. I will be the direct voice between Dave and the aftermarket and groups/forums/ads with organizations,.. ect... I will do ALL I can to bridge the gap between the two. I will encourage the resin guys decal makers ect.. Your voice/thoughts/aspirations DO matter. Feel needed!!!!

J. Dave has every intent to keep these kits AFFORDABLE so that folks can be able to own/build a kit straight out of the box or build a composite of aftermarket resin parts...ect..

K. I will keep updating this list as I have more info kind of bi-weekly as I have more...

That's all I have at this juncture.....CHIME IN GUYS!!! Let's hear it! Do you want 1/16th??? Let's do this!!!....

Be assured that Dave and I will do our part to make this a striking success!!!!!

I would settle for a plane jane box. The post cards pics sure are nice but just not that important to me, but it would be super cool if you could do a post card pic from one of the racers own stash of vintage photos.

Thanks for taking the time to share your info with us Art. I hope this stuff can be worked out

I would be interested in a FC. I agree some vintage footage on the box would be cool. Only thing it sounds like the parts are not accurate. That would be my biggest qualm, is if they are going to do 1/16 the tube chassis needs to be more accurate and fix the issue that the smaller kits have with the body mount, making the body set to high.

Here's something I would like to see fixed. Drag slicks. They are too flimsy, unrealistic and in some cases (I've heard) they dry rot / crack / fail.

Would it truly be such a big deal to do them in molded plastic? I'd rather fill a seam and paint them realistically than deal with sanding down a seam on a tire that's constantly eluding my efforts. They could even have an option for a "low pressure, at rest" minor wrinkle on both sides of the bottom. Just like the real thing. That would be my incentive to buy as many kits as my wallet could handle. Wouldn't hurt to kick in decal options for Goodyear, M&H, and others as licensing would allow.

Yes, by all means bring them back, but please keep in mind the sector of the hobby being marketed to here. We want the good stuff and understand they won't be cheap. I think bringing in Model King is a great idea.

As Myself and Tom McEwen told Art on the phone the other day, it's all about money, they simply won't do them if they can't sell them...PERIOD... If enough people get get on board it could happen, but weather its Revell or Model King there has to be a profit in it. Tom McEwen has no problems about being open to doing his old cars, Prudhomme is a whole there story, so don't plan on his cars being done, there are many other racers we know that would love to see their cars done. I'm just saying this is a great idea that Art is trying to do. I used to own SLIXX decals with the late Bill Robinson and Gene and we know some of these guys are great to work with and some are not.I have tried to talk to Revell as others have about redoing and updating these kits over the years which would be great, No offense to the model makers but we don't need anymore Mustang and corvette kits (my humble opinion only). And to share something with you, Bob Utalski who left Revell was their Drag racing guy and spearheaded the Chi Town and Hawaiian funny car kits and was interested in doing the 1965 A/FX dodge and Plymouth altered wheel base funny cars, but he suddenly left and the guys there now do know cars but not really drag racing. I may be wrong but thats what I have seen.So tell everyone, have them write, e-mail and phone. as I told Art, i think thats the only way there is going to be movement on the model companies part. And as I understand Dave at Model King can no longer get anything thru Round 2, only Revell which is a shame.

PS also no matter what you have heard or read the Aurora Molds for the 1/16th funny cars, they are long gone, my friend Tom West designed those kits and has told me they are no more .

Here's some artwork i did many years ago for the MPC vette funny car to made into a Mongoose car and my proposal to Polar Lights to do the A/FX cars, and it went no where, sad to say.

I would love to see more of this scale released to the market. There is so much more you can do on the detailing end versus the smaller scales. I myself have spent a sizeable amount of funds and time on my new 1/16 - 1/18 scale detailing parts line and was banking on future releases in this scale so I have my fingers crossed.

Hello Jim and Art... I can't thank you guys enough for being our voices to Revelle and Model King. Art I still want to give you a buzz and chat with ya, I just need to find time in my busy schedule that I can talk. I know if more of these 1/16th kits would get release, I would be buying a bunch of them myself. If I had a choice on which funny car of McEwen... here would be the choices:

I don't want to be presumptious about not being able to get licencing from Mattel cleared....why not just say 'the skys the limit',...on anything we try in this venture....after all , this topic seems to be the most dicussed topic in drag racing modeling right now....Who in their widest dreams would have thought that was possible....Can't anyone here tell I've got a positive outlook on this stuff.....lol.
