1965 Plymouth Fury, A Little Color.

I've decided to dig out a couple of old builds that I had started quite a while ago & try to get going on them again.

I started a thread on this '65 Plymouth Fury more than a year ago, but abandoned it because the paint job was not up to my standards.

Now that that thread is basically defunct because of the Photobucket fiasco, I've decided to start a fresh one rather than try to resurrect the old thread.

Originally, this was going to be painted a pale champagne gold with a white top, but I've decided on something just a little more interesting.

I still haven't settled on an exact color as I'm still experimenting with the custom mix, but a kind of metallic gray-green will be the ultimate color.

I've also decided to dump the original 426 Hemi that came with the kit & go with a 426 "Street Wedge" from the Moebius Plymouth kit.

I have not been able to corroborate whether or not a Hemi was even available in the Fury in '65.

Seems that it wasn't.

Anyway, I'm close to being ready to start slinging some color on this one.

Hemi was NOT available in Fury..The Hemi became public buying in 1966 in the intermediates, not the 'C" bodies, although I bet one or two snuck out with one, or someone had an inside person..

Don't know if its true, but i read where a owner of a casino with a car collection wanted a Hemi in a station wagon and at first Mother Mopar said no. But later recanted and he got his Hemi wagon. Don't remember the year. But 1964 and 1965 were race only engines, they would of been a real pain to drive on the street.

I know that in the late 60s & early 70s you could get nearly any option that you wanted on your Mopar.

My parents used to add and subtract individual options on their cars when they ordered them.

It's an original Johan kit.

They're very rare & quite expensive, if you can find one.

My guess is that there are some resin casters out there that have probably reproduced it.

That looks great. My uncle in California had a Red 65 Sports Fury with a 426 wedge and a 4 speed. I only wish that JoHan had kitted the 64-68 Plymouths as Sport Furys instead of Fury/Fury III with an inaccurate bucket seat  interior. I was able to find an old promo interior with a bench seat for my 65 Convertible project, However, the Sport Fury Convertible interior is gorgeous, needing some window crank and armrest detail to make it pop.

I'm not particularly worried about the incorrect interior in this kit.

Johan did that quite often with some of their kits.

It would probably be easier to either make, or have made, some "Sport Fury" script decals for the trunk lid & front quarters than to mess with changing the interior.

But I'm not going to bother with that either.

Cars from this era were notorious for popping up with unusual configurations.

Back in those days, it was relatively easy to order a vehicle with all kinds of strange options that weren't necessarily included with a particular package.

I don't know if a Fury 3 could have been ordered with bucket seats or not, & I don't know why one would do that anyway, but for the purposes of this build, that's how it's going to be. :)

I agree Steve. I am still going to make up a split bench seat for my 68 Plymouth convertible and Hardtop when I build them. I have to hunt down several non hemi, single 4 barrel  V8s for my 60's Johan Plymouths and Dodges.

I've seen Fury III with buckets in the USA but never seen one in Canada..On another post above you mentioned the 65 Satellite engine..You could also use the V8 from the 64 Plymouth(Lindberg)..Its got the correct larger air cleaner on it..You could also use the 6 cylinder as there were some Fury III with that engine..

I'm in that process right now!

Not only for Mopars, but trying to scrounge some non-tripower mid '60s Pontiac engines has become difficult as well.

That was my original thought Wayne, but the air cleaner in the '64 is not quite the same as the Moebius one.

It's a little smaller and shaped a bit differently.

But it is very likely going to be an option for a Johan '64 Fury or Polara build.

I seriously thought about that Wayne, but I just couldn't bring myself to put a 6 banger in this nice old Fury! :D

The air cleaners on the 64 and 65  big blocks had the large ribbed sides..I'll show you on my 64 Convertible..

Yup, the air cleaner in the Moebius '65 looks just like that in chrome.

The one in the Lindberg  '64 is a little smaller & doesn't have the "dents" in the sides.

Plus, the Moebius kit has the chrome valve covers, which I understand was what the '65 was equipped with, and I believe it has the air cleaner decal.

I'm not certain what decals the '64 Belvedere has.

I seem to be missing mine.

Air cleaner and valve covers were not chrome..Engine paint is Duplicolor Chrysler Turquoise and now they call it Chrysler green..Looks the same..My 1:1 was Plasticote Chrysler Engine Turquoise but they don't have it any more, so the Duplicolor is the one..Engine doesn't look too bad for 40,000 miles of driving eh?  Clean it ever time I take it out..

Not in the '64, but all of my research suggests that they should be in the '65.

I am pretty sure chrome was on the 426 wedge engines only, the 383  powered cars  have black air cleaner and engine color valve covers

The engines in both the Lindberg '64 Belvedere & the Moebius '65 Satellite depict 426 Commando engines, so for the '65 Fury with the 426, the chrome valve covers would have been correct.

If I used the '64 engine, the valve covers would need to be chromed or switched for chrome ones.

Steve,

I've edited my comment to reflect what I believe to be true. Although I'm not up on these cars as well as I am the 1966 and later cars

I ran one of the Performance / Race Engine dynos at Chrysler Engineering from the 1960's to the 1990's. On the 1964 Max Wedge engine it came with what they called the "Chrome trim Pack" which included valve covers, air cleaner, oil filler cap, crankcase valve cap. Attached is a copy of the 1964 engine brochure. If you read the paragraph at the far right under "426 High Performance V8" it mentions these items. Sorry, the last part of the sentence got cut off. If I remember right that's how it went into production.5ab829564a0ef_1964DodgeRamchargerBooklet-12-13.jpg.810f270e82f0e7a32e878ccc42d23288.jpg
