I finally was able to get some workbench time and wrap this project up.

Autore Oil and Propane Peterbilt 388 daycab.

Autore388closerh-vi.jpg

The Autore lettering was made by Charles Rowley and the pin stripes and scrolls are from Kit Form Services.

The decals make the model.

The hood is scratchbuilt and a twin to it became the P&P 388 hood. I modified the cab for the newer doors, windows, and fabricated the daycab panel and the mirrors. The interior features the P&P door panels, steering wheel and instrument panel.

The trailer was built in '03 or '04 using the then-current reissue of the tanker with the CCR and Texaco decals. I think I used every spare tire, wheel and suspension piece I had in the parts boxes back then.

Additional pics are on my site at TimsTrucks.com and in the album on Fotki

Thanks for looking!

Very nice work Tim as usual. But I must ask, what is the purpose of all those wheels, unless its hauling liquid mercury or a very large hunk of steel or something. And even then,I would think that many wheels would add to the rolling resistance, plus make turning tight turns almost impossible. But ###### thats a fine looking rig, and the way You photograph Your builds adds to the realism.

It's a Michigan thing.. more axles more more more !

The trailer is a fictional one for Autore - their biggest is a 6 axle.

I was waiting for this particular one ever since you started and saw the pictures of the real thing. Man, that is SPOT-ON! Love the pin stripes, I don't excatly know what you did to the wheels but they look so real, especially the rear ones. This is a nice fleet truck and the model gets the feel of it. Very nice indeed.

The spot mirrors are part of the Italeri kit.

Tim

Cool truck Tim!

The pre-trip inspection would be a real pain! That is a lot of tires to thump every time !:)

Kostas,

I was surprised at how easy the pin stripes and scollwork really was. The KFS decals are quite easy to work with.

Tim

Very nice and clear built Tim!!!

I can only imagine what a pain could be installing those pinstripes?

Yeah, I was wondering how long it would take to the driver to check the air preasure for all these weels lol

I can just imagine that tire bill...

I've never seen a six-axle trailer except for a few low-boys and other specialized stuff. A six-axle tanker??

I do like the execution.

Excellent job, Tim. Im like all of the little details you added to the tractor. What is the black tube behind the cab for?

I have only seen one tire fire on a tanker. Sure would hate to see how fast and hot that would get!B)

This is a really cool and different build. I love the pinstripe work!

Thanks, even 6 axles seem like overkill ! Must be a Michigan thing! :-)

That's exactly what it is...Please, somebody correct me if I'm wrong but the way I understand it is like this: Basically, if you can stuff enough axles under the trailer to handle so much weight per axle, The State of Michigan says that you can haul it on their roads. I don't know what the weight limit is per axle but if the limit is say, 12,000# per axle, a six-axle trailer can weigh 72,000# loaded... FYI, the USDOT weight limit for "Regular" 18-wheelers is 80,000#, combined (tractor and trailer). Michigan trailers with five to eight axles are not uncommon, especially belonging to crude oil companies or bulk commodity transports that haul within the state... That is a long pre-trip inspection!
