diymirage Posted May 14, 2011 Posted May 14, 2011 hey guys as some of you know i am very slowly building "rusty" the charger dayclona from Joe Dirt it seems the origenal car doesnt have a backseat and so i started thinking, i dont want to go through the trouble of cutting out the back seat and scratchbuilding the paneling that goes underneath i guess i could have used the revell 69 charger tub but its to late for that so i though, what would Joe do? well, here is what i came up with i first found a picture of a lynynrd skynyrd flag and cropped it to about the size i needed i then ran a test print (in draft) to make sure i liked the size and i knew where on the paper it would go once i was pleased with the way it looked i cut up an old rag and taped it over the image on the paper (with plenty of room to spare) i ran the whole thing through the printer again, only this time on high quality all thats left now is trim and put in in the back of Joes dayclona havent gotten to that part yet but here is a mock up of the flag in the backseat of Rosco's monaco
Ryan S. Posted May 14, 2011 Posted May 14, 2011 I would have never thought that running cloth through a printer would have worked. I'm surprised that the thickness didn't jam it up. That's a pretty cool trick!

That's a pretty cool trick! judging by the black smudges on it it might have been a tight fit but it seems to me that as long as it is taped down properly and there is no slack in the clotch it works fine (not that i wasnt skeptic myself at first)

I thought the black smudging was 'weathering' I didn't realize it was from the printer. It works well for the Joe Dirt application though, I guess! Does your printer still work like normal after running the cloth through? I would think doing that a lot could jam the cartridges with fibers, but once in a while not too bad. Kudos to you for trying something new!

Foxer Posted May 15, 2011 Posted May 15, 2011 (edited) An inkjet nozzle doesn't touch the paper normally, so there is a "microspace". Many printers adjust this space on their own depending on the paper specified. This opens up many possibilities, so thanks to Eelco for donating his printer to the greater cause! LAone Posted May 17, 2011 Posted May 17, 2011 what this guy said^^ im sure if you adjust the paper type on the printer, it'll make a gap big enough for the sheet to go through. IE card stock, photo paper ect are thicker than plain paper. so cudos to you sir for doing this.
diymirage Posted May 17, 2011 Author Posted May 17, 2011 thanks for the replies guys i guess i will make sure the paper will be set to the maximum thickness
