Tennessee State Trooper VW Beetle Also Known as "The Litter Bug" Chattanooga: Trooper's litter Beetle on the lookout for trash When the Tennessee Highway Patrol's Kevin Kennett drives down the main road in Murfreesboro, parks his Volkswagen Beetle bearing his department's name and steps out in his uniform, people grow curious. "It's a good catcher," said Trooper Kennett, who patrols 12 counties in the Middle Tennessee District as a state litter trooper. "Everybody just flocks to it. It helps promote the litter program." Trooper Kennett is one of eight litter troopers statewide presenting programs to schools and companies about composting, littering and legislation about tossing trash on the ground. "We have to basically educate the younger generation to help save ... the environment and also to keep Tennessee clean," he said. A Tennessee State law makes littering a misdemeanor for small amounts of waste, punishable by a $50 fine, and in some cases a felony, depending on the amount of litter disposed and the number of offenses, which is punishable by larger fines. The Volkswagon Beetle, which "Litterbug," can be taken anywhere in the state for parades, county fairs and other promotional opportunities, Trooper Kennett said. "Any type of public relations that we can use it for, we use it," he said. The highway patrol has no plans to purchase more Beetles, and the department will not outfit other officers with them, spokeswoman Laura McPherson said."It's not like a fleet car that a lot of officers are driving,"
