Really enjoying this thread! Did anyone mention the Barnabas Collins Van from "Dark Shadows"? Even though the character in the show doesn't drive, MPC still made the model using his name. As I recall, MPC butchered a nice '33 (?) Chevy panel van kit to make the goofy Barnabas van.

I have some of the well-known TV vehicles in my collection, such as the '66 Batmobile, Green Hornet Imperial, Route 66 Corvette ('62, of course), but my favorite is the fake 1928 "Porter" from "My Mother the Car". On my "Holy Grail" list is the custom Toronado from "Mannix".

Outstanding job! (Of course, I'm a bit prejudiced. We have a 1:1 in the family which is dressed up in Herbie livery)

judging by the photos you posted of your 1:1 Corvair, I'd say that your carburetor and induction system has been "tweaked" quite a bit as compared to what we had to work with back in the day. ? So, if your 4-bbl set-up works well for you, my hat's off to you. The ones I worked on 30+ years ago weren't worth #%*&. It's a gorgeous car you got there! I'll have to dig up and post the photos of my mid-engined V-8 Corvair that I used to have.....

AMT offered a '63 Monza in convertible form, but all of the other Corvair annuals have been 2-door coupe or hard tops (that I can recall). A few years ago, one of the resin casters offered a '69 Monza convertible body and boot, intended for use with the reissued AMT '69 hardtop as a donor kit. I cannot recall who produced it, but it was very nice, so I bought one. I still see them pop up on evilBay occasionally. Nice job on this one, Jason! It always warms my heart to see Corvair models show up on the Forum. Your center-mounted 4-barrel carb set-up was indeed offered by aftermarket suppliers. However, they did not work well; very hard to keep in tune, and didn't operate well in cold weather. Still, it's realistic to have it on your model.?

Built a couple of years ago...my first attempt at a rat rod type vehicle. Was a lot harder to build than I expected, and has given me a whole new level of respect for you folks who build them on a regular basis.

yeah, Scott, I've got that Modelhaus '67 Monza 4-door in my stash. I've got a '65 4-door in my 1:1 collection, and I plan to backdate the Modelhaus unit to replicate it. Should be an easy conversion.

Been going steady with the same girl for 40 years. She tolerates all of my cars, both 1:1 and 1/25, even the Corvairs! ?

I have some models in my collection which are over 50 years old, and the silver paint on them still isn't "dry"!

Received help recently from "DisabledModeler" (Mark) and "GardnerPAG44" (Paul), both of whom provided hard-to-find stuff and fair trades. Also received much-needed part from "Rodent" (Steve Andrews) who went out of his way to dig it out of his stash for me. Also had a great trade with Steve Guthermiller. Great Forum members!

Welcome back to the hobby! just post an ad in the "wanted" section of the Forum. I'm sure someone will have that kit. If you don't specifically need a '49, keep in mind that AMT/Round 2 has recently reissued their '50 Ford in the "Showboat" version. Mike

As I mentioned in a previous post, I was fortunate to get a copy of Starbird's biography (written by his grandson), as well as reading a bunch of other material on the "Predicta" over the years. It is true that Starbird himself ran the car at the 1960 Kansas City AHRA national drag meet. The bubble top wonder hit over 100MPH with its Hemi engine. Not just "plausible", but the real deal.....

Anyone get their hands on the reissued '60 Vette yet? I was just wondering if was faithful to the original MPC kit. Although the original had some flaws, it built up nicely, and had some useful extras such as the rally racer parts.

What kits did you get for Christmas?

No plastic from Santa, but my daughter gave me a gift card for evilBay. Some good stuff should arrive at my door in a few days.... -
What did one snowman say to the other snowman? "Gee, it smells like carrots in here".....

Most fun you had in a car. KEEP IT P.G.

Had similar good time in my '62 Corvair coupe during lunch time. I think we got eight (8) or nine (9) in it one day, but hard to operate stick shift with someone (female) sitting on my lap. This took place in mid-70s before seatbelt laws, and before the stupid schools administrators decided to make our school a "closed campus". -
Steve: One of my holy Grails, too. So, you're the guy who's been bidding-up the price on these kits??? ;-)

"Holy Grail" Models?
ToyLvr replied to Billy Kingsley's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
Have really been enjoying this thread. Seems like the recurrent theme is everyone looking for a kit from their childhood that inspires fond memories. I'm no different, but my search had a really great ending. What if someone walked up to you one day, and handed you a bunch of boxes that contained *all* of your Holy Grail kits???? Here's my story... I have a much older brother who came of age during what many refer to as the "Golden Age" of model cars, late 50's - mid 60s. He was a wiz at building them, with slick paint jobs and often great detail. Then, like many others of that era, he graduated to 1:1 cars, got married, started a family and career, etc etc, and the models got boxed-up and stashed away for decades. As a kid, I would sometimes watch him build, and was astonished by his skill. As the collection grew, I committed each car and its details to memory, vowing to obtain and build some of them for myself "someday". Well, in my day (1970s), I was a pretty decent builder, but no Tim Boyd. Figured I could handle those golden oldies, though, so I started trying to track down some of those kits like my brother built. Didn't have much luck. Would nail one once-in-a-while. Fast forward to the late 90s and the internet, started getting more scores, but still missing so many. Prices also were skyrocketing for old kits. I was also dealing with family and career obligations; you know how it goes. Spring of 2010, my brother, now almost 70 years old, knowing that I'm still a model car nut, hands over the aforementioned boxes, saying he figured it was time to give me the collection for "safekeeping". I just about passed out on the spot. Not only the built-ups, but some unbuilt treasures as well. And, let me also mention the "parts box" - some of you guys would go nuts over its contents. Attached is a photo of a small sampling of some of his cars on display in my "man cave". Hope you enjoy.....
