  1. the gold pinstripe is to evoke the Star City navy/gold car, and the blue/white here also evokes the Firecracker Road Runner you mention. It's all tied in there.
  2. Madhorseman, I see your point. Couldn't think of a good way to work the red into the hood. I have an idea.... I might add and repost.
  3. Mark, first of all, thanks! Second, you mention doing Wendell's car... I had two thoughts for this. One was DW's rookie car (Terminal Transport) and the other was a Wendell tribute using the Cyclone but mixing in the light blue from his Galaxies. Still want to try that one.
  4. Richard Petty did the unthinkable in 1969. Having run his entire career in Chrysler-Plymouth products, he jumped to Ford for one season. In doing so, his car's paint job stayed exactly the same. To me, that always seemed a little odd. His petty blue #43 was iconic even then, but I would have expected at least some small evolutionary changes to reflect such a major shift for the King. I was out of town in July, and stopped in a Hobby Lobby in Jackson, MS. Checking on what they had, I found a few things not available in our Birmingham stores... namely the Polar Lights Richard Petty Talledega. It sat in my closet for 4 months, as I tried to figure out what to do with it. Finally, I got an idea. Before Richard was The King, his father was the winningest and one of the most popular drivers in the early NASCAR days. As Richard was coming up on the circuit, he and his father drove identical cars with Lee running #42 and Richard #43. The last full season of Lee's career, they ran 1960 Plymouth Furys that looked like this: Unfortunately, Lee was in a terrible accident at Daytona in 1961, crashing through the guardrail and flying out into the parking lot with Johnny Beauchamp. Lee nearly died, and spent nearly 6 months in the hospital. He would eventually return, but only ran a few more races in his career. SO... I looked at the Talledega, and thought: What if Richard wanted to alter his scheme a little with the manufacturer change, and decided to make his new Ford ride a tribute to his dad? I didn't copy it directly by any means, but used the lines of the Ford body to make something that evoked his dad's last car. Box stock build, the paint scheme was the big thing here. I hope you like it, and it's not too blasphemous to alter The King's wheels!!
  5. So, I picked up the Donnie Allison Mercury, as the Cyclone is one of my all-time favorite Nascar rides. But, things were pretty tight when I bought the kit, and I didn't have the $ to invest in aftermarket tires/wheels and a decal set to make this into another vehicle, so it got tabled. I decided to go ahead and leave it as the Wood Brothers car with the kit decals, as Mike's was out of most the sets for other vehicles I would have built. I got into some other non-Nascar builds, so this sat for 4-5 months in the basement, and by the time I got to it, I had lost some of my mojo about it. Oh well.... I went ahead and finished it OOB, and while this simple MPC chassis is not the best, I was happier than I thought with the end result. Testors Classic White and a One-Coat lacquer (forget the color name), PPP tires/wheels. If they get some other decals for this back in stock, I might build another with a Monogram or AMT chassis/engine that has more detail, but this will do for now.
  6. So, I researched this one for a couple months. I read all 29 pages of the discussion when this kit was released, checked out a ton of people's builds, then started figuring out what I wanted to do with it. In the end, I decided to: I looked at tons of pics of the real car as well, waiting for something to really stand out to me as the perfect combo. I knew the interior was going to be white, but couldn't decide on a body color. In the end, a few pics of a Lime Green Metallic Cuda stayed with me the most. Then I set out to find a suitable paint (I don't own an airbrush), and was terribly disappointed. How on earth is it that different shades of light metallic sage-olive green were offered by every manufacturer and was the most popular color of the 60s and early 70s, and NOBODY offers a decent rattle can of a suitable color???? Anyway, after researching for two weeks, I found Automotive Touchup, and purchased a can of Pontiac Verdoro Green and Clearcoat from them. Two coats of color and 4 coats of clear were applied, compounded and waxed. Tried several different tires to get something a little more beefy but not over the top, and settled on the AMT Goodyear Polyglas GTs. Wired the engine, added battery cables and a little wiring on the firewall for detail I heard all of the complaints about the fenders, and agreed. I'm not sure what the reason is that the fenders were molded with such ridiculously prominent lips. I saw several builds where once painted, they weren't terrible, but they stuck out like a sore thumb to me comparing to photos of the real thing. I also noticed several pics where the real car didn't have the chrome trim rings, which I preferred, so I actually used the hobby knife to trim most of the lip off, then sanded as best as I could. Anyway, I have read all of the complaints, but this was a JOY to build, and is an excellent kit. First, i'll give a few WIP shots as it came together, and then some finished pics. Finally, I had to take it outside in the morning sun. Hope you enjoy... I loved this model.   7. MY FIRST POST since joining! Anyway, hello everyone. I purchased two AMT Camaros thus summer. The 70 Camaro just looked like a really good kit, and the second generation is a little forgotten, so I was excited to build this one. The 68 was purchased as a parts car, mainly to get the full set of both sizes of the Goodyear Polyglas GTs that come inside this kit, but went ahead and built it anyway. It's not a terrible model, but it's probably the worst interior I've ever seen... huge lack of detail... and not much in the engine or chassis. It's interesting, because the 70 has a lot of detail molded in and is a great model... the 68 is OK on the shelf from a distance. So, I wired the engine, made some extra hoses and really tried to detail everything. I ended up using Testors Nassau blue, black/gray deluxe interior. I'm working on the Revell 67 Camaro now, and detailing that one up since it's a better kit... so I dediced the 68 should be something different. Instead of thinking through a perfect color combo, I went with something totally 60s.. a gold on gold car. On to the pics:

  9. This is OUTSTANDING!! I have a question for you... I'm working on the R/M 67 Camaro as well... my wife's dream car is the Camaro from Better Off Dead, and I'm replicating that. What did you use for the RS grille on this??
  10. Ron, this is GORGEOUS! Question: you mentioned the tires were resin pieces... what are they and where did they come from? I've gotten really frustrated with skinny kit tires... I need to find some good street tires for muscle cars like this. THANKS
