Need help w/ decanting
Albert Moore replied to J Smith's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
From the files of 'Do not try this at home'- About nine years ago (back when I was young and foolish- don't ask the difference now other than it's just nine years later ) I was working on a #24 Jeff Gordon DuPont Monte Carlo and decided that I wanted to decant the metallic blue from the can when it came time to apply that color. I had read about letting all the propellant out of the can and then puncturing it to drain the paint. I turn the can upside down and release the all the propellant until I couldn't hear any hissing. So, out comes the safety glasses (at least I was smart in that regard) and the Black & Decker cordless drill. You know what happens next- as the bit entered the can- BANG! As a reaction to what had just occurred, I squeezed the trigger which spun the can really fast, flinging paint EVERYWHERE within a 15 foot radius from where I was standing. The spousal unit was not amused at the mess...... The drill still bears the splattered metallic blue paint as a reminder to not try such foolish things again. The straw trick is soooo much safer... Nice looking plain wrapper (as we call them in the trucking world)! The paint looks good from this side of the monitor. Cheers, Albert

The only aftermarket items I've added to the interior was the photo-etched half CD and the flocking. In fact that is the only aftermarket items for the whole build period. The other modifications I did involved kitbashing bits from other kits, otherwise the rest is OOB. It does have rotors with molded calipers and chassis is well engraved/molded. Out of box this kit builds into an excellent model, except for the tires. HTH, Albert

Thanks for the kudos, Randy, Dave, and Chuck. Given the outstanding the work I see here I'm glad that the Bullitt is well received. Cheers, Albert

Hi Jason, Thanks for the kudos! The rims came from the Bullitt kit while the tires came from AMT's F&F Toyota Supra kit (thanks to Dave Zinn for the heads-up on the 'Yota tires). The raised tire retainers on the rims needed to be removed in order to fit the Supra tires properly, an easy and painless modification which greatly enhanced the overall appearance. Cheers, Albert

Thanks for the kind comments Bob, and thank you for the article you did on fixing some of the bugaboos with these newer Mustang kits! The tips came in really handy. Thank you Chris! I will definitely share the in-prog build of the KR build. I have the kit and the paint ready to go (Grabber Orange- that what color the boss wants hers ). Cheers, Albert

Thanks Jim! 'Tip Of The Mitt' is the northern most area of Michigan's lower peninsula. Cheers, Albert Thanks for the kudos, James! Bob Downie's method for adjusting the ride height worked like charm (using business cards as a 'jack stand' of sorts to set the proper height). The next automobile up will be the new Shelby GT-500KR (for the missus, seeing this one is mine ). I hope to get started on it soon (I have helicopter build review to finish first). Cheers, Alby

Hi Gang, Here is my first completed build for the MCM forum (and my second car in an eight year period), Revell's 2008 Mustang Bullitt. Other than a different shifter, p/e CD in the player, better tires, flocking, and photo-reduced license plate w/ photo-etched frame, this was built out-of-box. The color is Model Master British Green Metallic (which I know is incorrect) with several coats of Testor's One Coat lacquer (which was decanted and applied with an airbrush). The in-prog thread can be found here. Thanks for looking, all critiques and comments welcomed. Cheers, Albert

Fantastic looking Challenger! The color combo looks terrific, as does the interior. Cheers, Alby

Hi Riz, I took a digital photo of the covers of a few of the discs in my collection and then re-sized them to 1/25 scale (I used Microsoft Word to rework all the dimensions and a photo-etched CD as a size reference). The covers were printed out on glossy card stock, while acetate sheet and strip styrene were used to simulate the jewel cases. HTH, Alby

Small update for today. The body has been polished out and the all the lights added. I painted the tail light panel semi-gloss black for a custom touch. The license plate is a photo reduced copy that was scaled down and then printed out. The license plate frame adds a little more bling. A slight change to the interior goodies. Better printed CD cases were added (plus Forbidden's 'Distortion' was put in place of Rush's '2112'). I also added a photo-reduced version of a Mustangs & Fast Fords magazine in the back seat. Next photos will be of the completed model. Cheers, Alby

Hi John, Thank you for the very kind compliments. Glad to see my work has inspired the next generation of builders to tackle the new Mustang kits. It is a great kit for newer builders as it is not too difficult to get a decent result OOB (the tires are the only thing that could use some help) and it is a really fun kit to build. And that's the name of the game, having fun! Hi Dave, I appreciate the kudos! I have admit that I really lack when it comes to uber detailing so I use my painting skills to compensate (part of that is a result of my military modeling background). Most of my builds are 1/72 aircraft, which can be challenge to paint at times (especially the cockpits). One of these days I'll share some of my aircraft builds. Thanks again for the very kind comments! Cheers, Alby PS- The Bullitt 'Stang is my second go at this kit. Here is my first outing with the Revell Mustang, which was built a couple of years ago;

Nice save! The stripe color and that brick red paint look great together. Cheers, Albert -
What a sweet looking wagon! The colors look terrific together and I really dig the sleek look of the doors minus the handles. Overall an excellent build. Cheers, Albert

Finally! I have a painted body. Actually this is the second time I've painted this body. The first go around didn't go so great and the color was fifty shades too dark. So into the CSC tank it went. After the paint was stripped, I redid the trunk bodywork (redrilled the holes out and filled them in with styrene rod) and applied several coats of Dupli-Color primer/sealer. The body was wet sanded to smooth the primer, rinsed, and set aside to dry. Next came nine coats of Model Master British Green Metallic. I know this isn't quite correct but it's what I had on hand so it'll have to do. A couple of pics with the flash on; Now she'll sit for 10 days to let the paint cure completely. After that I'll buff out the paint and add a few clear coat to make the paint really sparkle. Thanks as always for looking. Cheers, Alby

It's getting hotter in Texas!
Albert Moore replied to Corvette.Jeff's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
We were down in Austin the third week of June and the coolest day was 99 degrees. While it was nice to back home so to speak, I had forgot just how hot Texas was in the summer (grew up in the Austin area, but have been here in Northern Michigan since 1987). It did make doing the tourist thing difficult at times. Still, if things go right, we'll be calling Austin home this fall. As for the Great White North, it has been below average temperature wise all summer with exception of a few days here and there. Hell, the first back from Texas it was 69 degrees here with a bit of a chilly wind. The 4th of July was the same thing. Cheers, Albert -
Thanks for the kind words everybody, I appreciate it! Full point goes to Captain Obvious and Red Ranger for getting the artist and titles correct on both discs. I'll give half a point to El Destructo for getting the group right on the Ride The Lightning CD. Thanks again for the kudos. Next update will show a painted body I hope. Cheers, Alby

Holy cow, it's been a while since I updated this thread! Anyhoo, after a few busy weeks of family time because of a vacation and the madness around the 4th of July (big tourist draw here in the North), I was able to get some work done this past weekend. The rims were stripped of their chrome via Liquid Plumber and repainted Model Master Titanium Metalizer (unbuffed). After the Titanium dried, I sprayed a few coats of Future for a gloss coat to seal the finish and give the rims a nice shine. Silver paint from the square jar was applied to the outer edge and also the dust cap and lug nuts. Mustang logos from the kit decal sheet were applied the dust caps, thus finishing the rims. The tires are from AMT's Toyota Supra kit, as suggested by Davezinn; As a final touch for the interior, two CDs cases were made and laid on the passenger seat. Bonus point to who can identify which CDs these are; Thanks for looking! Cheers, Albert

Dave, Thanks on the info in regards to the fuel tank. I took some under side photos of an '10 Mustang at the local dealer (one of the salesmen looked rather befuddled as to what I was doing) and the tank was black on that one (or at least the shield/cover was ) . Ford did do a good job in making the new Bullitt nondescript that's for sure. Some updated photos of the interior. I wasn't happy with just a black painted floor so out came the Ken's Fuzzi Fur black and gray flocking. This is the second time I've used it and just love the look of it; The completed dashboard; And the completed interior/undercarriage assembly (er, still have to add the upper radiator hose and master cylinder); Cheers, Alby

Thanks Dave, Matt, George, Tommy, and Nathan! Glad you guys are enjoying the in-prog photos, and thanks again for the positive comments! Hi George, Thanks for the kudos! The tank is semi-gloss black, the color balance was thrown off by the window blinds being open in my hobby room when I took the pictures (it's reflecting the light outside). Thanks again, I appreciate the compliments! Cheers, Albert

Hi Gang, New update for today but first thank you all for your positive comments so far. This is the second build log that I've posted so the encouragement is greatly appreciated. The interior is pretty much completed. I used Tamiya Deck Tan (TS-68) for the tan color on the seats, door panels, console, and lower dashboard. Model Master Black Chrome was used for the seats, panel inserts, and upper dashboard. Aluminum Metalizer was used for dashboard panel. After the dashboard was painted, I used small dots of white to represent the text on the buttons and dials. I cut a photoetched CD in half and stuck in the CD slot. Last touch was using a sewing needle ball top for the shifter ball; The Detailer was used to bring some of the dashboard detail to life. Next update should be the body (though it'll be a couple of weeks before I get to it- going out of town for vacation next week) Thanks for looking. Comments/critiques welcomed as always. Cheers, Albert
