My model jones got started at the Rexall Drug Store on Main Street in Hoisington. Later, my first (and best for many years) real hobby shop was Ben's Hobby Den in Wichita. Much later, it was Colpar Hobbies in Aurora and Compleat Games and Hobbies in Colorado Springs. These days, not much ... just chain stores. But there's ALWAYS been Caboose Hobbies in Denver!! PS: I was saddened to discover on my most recent trip to the Mile High City that Mizell's in Wheatridge had shut down.

Same with "dizzy." I've been a car guy for more than 5 decades and only recently heard one person incessantly refer to a distributor as a "dizzy" ... and insist it was a common term. I don't think I've been under a rock ...

For many years, Jim has been dealing in Hotwheels (buying low, selling high) and that gradually took over his (plastic) building time. Jim "retired" from plastic a few years ago, but he's still a Moonlight member and shows up once a year or so for a club meeting. Most commonly, we see him at swap meets. However, he had a massive heart attack a couple of weeks ago, resulting in quad-bypass surgery. He's still hospitalized and recovering but doing okay.

Good stuff, Mr. Wizard. Keep it coming!

We had to get him back from that Southern Utah resort town in order to get him back to the bench! He showed us the beginnings of his garage diorama at the club meeting the other night ... that's gonna be something!! A little arm-twisting and we've even gotten Jim to dust off the computer, so we'll do what we can to keep him motor-vated to hang here.

One ... just one ... of my favorites was the Kaiser Darrin gasser! Too much! There were a lot of awesome rides out there in the 1:1 arena.

I think Ace was speaking 'tongue-in-cheek,' which is an ironic or mildly sarcastic version of 'speaker-inside-dog.' And, sorry, Michael, but if you supplied "all the parts" to the builder, he is NOT scratchbuilding a model for you. He might be assembling one. He might scratchbuild other portions of it. But if you ~ or anyone else ~ provides "all the parts" he cannot scratchbuilt it. Period. "Scratchbuilding" is mutually exclusive of any form of 'out of box' or kitbashing or assembling of parts.

A lot of people throw around the term 'scratchbuilding' in order to self-aggrandize their work. It's the people who are ignorant of the true meaning of the term ~ or, too lazy to adhere to the true meaning ~ who enable the first group. Much like most language/grammar/syntax violations, allowing improper usage to go uncorrected or unchallenged merely reinforces the acceptance of bad language/grammar/syntax and eventual blurring of the lines through common misuse.
