Hot Rod TV model car coverage
Tommy Kortman replied to djway3474's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
DJ, Thanks for the heads up!! That episode was fantastic. I caught the MCM photo card too. It was great to see the beautiful builds featured on a Nat'l TV show. That was a nice atta boy for our hobby. I sure hope a lot of people saw that. It should show the manufactures that we are still out here building, and from a builders standpoint, the model hobby is as stong as ever. WooooHoooo!!! -

Mike, Detail master makes a nice set of machined aluminum ones. P/N DM-3221. Also Replica and Miniatures Co. of Md. makes a nice set of resin scoops. As for velocity stacks, why not just use a peice of the appropriate size aluminum tubing? just make a slash cut at one end, and then trim it to the length you want. If your doing an old school rod, (sorry, but I dont like the term rat rod), you could even photo reduce some beer can labels to wrap around the tubes. For all kinds of induction ideas, pick up a copy of Old Skool Rodz magazine. It's filled with great ideas.

I concur. Although I think that Norm has more than just 2 styles.

Mounting a Flattie

If you look down next to the Whiskey bottle, you can see what the originals looked like. The motor mounts were/are part of the water pumps. There are 2 of them; right and left. -

Is there a Baltimore/DC Modelers Club?
Tommy Kortman replied to Dragline's topic in Model Club News and Announcements
MAMAs is a great club. They even let Cruz in. Although I think Lyle may regret it from time to time. The Philly Guyz make routine pilgrimages down there about 4 to 5 time a year. Well at least any time there is the slightest chance of food being present anyway. It's a 2.5 hour drive for us. Now were stuck, because if we quit we'd have to fork up $50.00 apiece. (Yea, the club dues are free, but if you want to quit it will cost you $50.00) -

Nice chioce Lyle. The Mcmullen roadster has always been one of my favorites too. But I guess if i have to pick one, I'd have to go with Milner's coupe. it is the "bitchinest ride in the valley". -
Scott Kalitta's Accident report
Tommy Kortman replied to CAL's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
I remember looking at the trap when I got there on Friday. It looked to me like the sand level was actually higher then he track surface. I remember thinking how that seemed odd because I thought that it would launch a car if it was hit correctly. I really wish I was wrong. As to the wall and pole, obviously the retaining wall runs parallel to the track, so the Gs there would be minimal. I think hitting the pole and ripping away the suspension and header should have pulled some energy out of the car, but the big G spike was hitting that crane. At this point, if all goes well, I will be back at the track again this year. I hope to camp out for the weekend. We'll see. Vios con Dios Scott... you are missed!! -

Scott Kalitta's Accident report
Tommy Kortman replied to CAL's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
From what I got from my buddy, when Scott hit the sand trap, it launched the car into the air. He caught the pole that holds the catch fence with the R/H side of the car. It ripped the r/h headers off the motor. If I remember correctly, the car did have an accelerometer in the car. It showed a couple of hits, but the numbers, when it hit the crane, went off the chart. Parts of the car were scattered all over the road behind the track. I dont think they ever found one of the front wheel and tire assemblies. I believe somewhere the BAC has been inflated. I do not recall hearing a number that high. i think it was .025. One of the rumors was that Scott had taken some cold medicine that morning. It was definitely a tragedy. I was at the track on friday. I do have a picture of Scott's last run. I am glad to see that they are keeping Scott's name on the car. -
Zack, I have used both the "sophisticated finishes" product and Rust-All. The craft store stuff is a 2 stage process. First you paint in the primer which contains metal particles, and once that is dry you apply the top coat. The top coat smells a little like vinager and it actually rusts the metal in the primer. I actually prefer the rust-all. It is a 4 step process, although I have never used the last step(dead flat) You bruch on a coat of the rust colored liquid, and before it dries you can sprikle on some of the dirt that they give you. The dirt is what gives the rust it's texture. Then you alternate between the "rust" and the black wash to get the color you desire. Once you get it to where you want it, you can seal it with Testors Dullcoat. You can also use the "rust" without the other 2 parts. I like to do this for lightly rusted chrome. I dont seal this beacuse I dont want to dull all of the chrome. There are also some pastel products out there aimed toward the military modelers that have a binder in them. instead of applying them dry like normal pastel chalks, you use some water and a paint brush. The water activetes the binder, and the pastel will stick to the surface. This will also add texture att the same time. If i remember correctly, the Dual truck had a lot of old rust and grime. So i would stay away from bright orange rust. Go with the darker oranges and browns. Poly Scale R/R colors has a couple of nice browns. they are Roof Brown, and Rail tie brown. They work pretty good for old grimy rust.

That's easy for you to say. I for one cant wait to watch Mr. Dudek stagger sideways out of the bar again. If the band's there again, maybe Mr. Stark and Mr. Forrester can start another sing along. Gotta remember my dollars for John's table dance this year.

Scott Kalitta's Accident report
Tommy Kortman replied to CAL's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
What twists me up, is that nobody wants to talk about the ESPN crane that Scott hit . The track asked ESPN a few times not to place the crane where they did. The track was ignored, ESPN got their shot, and a man lost his life. In most of the interviews I either heard or saw, the driver questioned had something negative to say about the tracks "failures", but not a word was uttered about the total lack of oncern for the reacers safety by the TV crew looking for the "perfect shot". I would hope that Connie could sue ESPN for negligence, but that would probably mean the end of Televised Drag Racing. I have a friend who works at E-Town. He also posts on this board occasionaly. He was telling some of the Philly Guyz that they had a similar wreck at the track a while ago where the driver of an alcohol F/C made the mistake of looking down to see what gear he was in at the top end of the track. When he looked up and finally pulled the chutes, he was already at the sand trap. He ended up at the same point Scott did. He got banged up and I think broke his arm, but he is still with us. The difference was that the camera boom was not there. -
