I am a model building newbie....
Tommy Kortman replied to Vince's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
Vince, First off, welcome to the forum. It's a great place to "Hang out" As to your question; eventually if you build long enough you will amass a styrene grave yard of parts kits. These are kits that you bought just to use a few parts on a current build, and then set the rest of the kit aside. (much to your spouse's dismay..."You paid how much just to get a set of wheels and tires?") Well, the bodies in these parts kits will make great "canvases" to practice on, work out new techniques, or even just try a new paint scheme before laying it down on the "good" kit you are building. Sometimes you can even find a few guys at a show that will be selling glue bombs cheap that you can pick -up for the same purpose. -
Very Cool. I remember having the Budweiser F/C. In the days before Political correctness, and before we had to be protected from ourselves.

Bob, I was lucky enough to be there on Friday & Saturday. I had a great time. The weather did not cooperate 100%, so as usual, the NHRA screwed the Pro Mod guys again. One of the reasons I love the E-Town event is because of the Pro-Mods. I wish the NHRA would stop treating them as stepchildren. They put on a great show.

Jersey Shore MCC June Meeting
Tommy Kortman replied to Dave Wood's topic in Model Club News and Announcements
Looks like another good meeting Dave. Sorry I missed it. -
Similar to Jeff, I use a piece of brass tubing. (I had some lying around) I taped it to the Tamiya nozzle with 3M green masking tape. I use a baby food jar (cleaned out of course) as the recepticle. I simply drill a hole in the lid a little bigger than the tube, and viola!! no mess!! I also like the ability to seal the jar in case I did not use all of the paint. I tape over the hole with more of the aforementioed 3M green. I have had the excess paint last about a week before going bad. One final note. let the paint gas out for about 15/20 minutes before trying to use it. On my first attempt, I neglected to do this and when I tried to use the pipette to get the paint into the airbrush, it just ran all over the work bench. Oh well...live and learn!

24 Heures du Mans
Tommy Kortman replied to Nick F40's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
Just as long as we see some good competition; that's all I really care about. Congrats to Peugeot, I'm glad somebody stopped the Audi dominance. It's not that I dislike Audi. They were a dominant team because they earned it. But I think that the lack of competition has made the class a little boring. Same goes for GT1. I Love the Corvettes, but just watching 2 cars go around the track is not racing...its a test session. GT2 has got to be by far the most competitive class in the ALMS or LMS. I just hope that where ever this series goes, the racing is competitive. In this day and age with the wealth of different motorsports series and disciplines, the racing needs to be exciting in order to hold the fans interest. And that means side by side racing, with passing and lead changes on the track, not just the pits. Just my 2 cents. But what the hell do I know. These could all just be the ravings of a madman!!!!! -

I've just heard via the Lizard team radio. They are out. They've had a major shunt into the tire wall at the first chicane (I'm guessing on the Mulsanne, they didn't specify). -

It appears that the Lizards are on the Pole!!! WOOHOOO!!! Well, it looks like I will be missing the beginning of the 24 Sat. (tomorrow now here on the East Coast) I have got tickets to the NHRA show @ E-town this weekend. I will be at the track Fri & Sat. I will definitely catch the overnight stuff though. Hopefully I will have some good photos to post. -
Cruz, This looks like it's going to be another one of your great jobs. Man you've come a long way from that trip to Long island a handful of years ago. (You remember...the trip where you almost getting run over by Ariel ) I liked the 1st set of wheels. I think I'd paint them up in a gunmetal grey color. I also love the yellow and black scheme pictured above, but what about instead of the single black graphic, go with the traditional SS stripes. If you go with the Hugger Orange, try White stripes. I alway thought that looked cool on the 69 Camaros. As for the power plant, it looks like your going with the GN v-6, but if it's not too late, if you are going for the Pro-touring look, why not a NASCAR small block chevy out of one of the mulitiude of those offerings? I believe that he amt versions were 1/25, so the motor wont look huge.

It's either that or your color blind. Seriously though Billy, The build came out pretty well. Nice job. That looks like a real smooth green. Did you clear it with the Hok clear? I know that the HoK Neons have limited "Lightfastness" What I mean is the the Hok (well any neon really) will fade quickly in the sunlight. Again...Very nice job.

So I guess I'll have 2 browser windows open during the non-TV broadcast hours. One to Speed TV.com, and one to here so i can see what the rest of the motorsports crazed modelers are doing. It should be interesting. -

KNIGHTS RULE!!! VOOOLLAARI!!!!!!! -
Bravo!!! Big Bill (God rest his soul) has got to be doing back-flips in his grave to see what his grandson has done to this (NASCAR) sport. I was the biggest fan. I went to Dover and Pocono 2x times a year each. I never missed a race on TV. I have worked in the Pits at Charlotte & Richmond for a couple of Sportsman (now defunct series) events as a gasman. I have held a NASCAR competition License in the Late Model division. But after Earnhardt died, and the powers that be started all this chase BS, and that locked in Qualifying junk. The series just went down hill. I mean they pulled the Southern 500 from Darlington on Labor day just to give a second date to Calif. so the NASCAR Brass could party with Hollywood pretty people. They abandoned the fans that took them to the top in popularity. And dont get me started on this POS they call the car of tomorrow. Now the NHRA looks like they are trying to kill themselves as well. First with this Chase nonsense too, then the petty stuff about the Nitro supply, and finally the 1000 foot racing junk. I think if you look at all of the racing series that are trying to screw themselves out of existence (F1 included), they are all being run by Greedy money-hungry corporate bean counters. They should be run by RACE FANS!!! If they worried more about putting on a good show for us (the fans), I think they would find their series thriving again. That reminds me...does anyone know where you would send an e-mail to so that you could tell NASCAR, NHRA, F1, etc what we the fans think about what they have done to thier respective series?

I too am quite anxious for this years LeMans. Although I am not sure how much of it I will actually see because I am supposed to be going to E-town (Englishtown) for the NHRA Supernationals that weekend as well. I did see some interesting info on Speed TV though. It seems that when the TV Channel brakes away from the race coverage to go to some meaningless NASCAR qualifying event or practice, true race fans will be able to go to Speed TV.com and get the live feed. Here's the link I found Speed TV Lemans telecast info Although I'm not sure how well the computer will fare covered in overspray from an all night model building binge. -
OUTSTANDING as usual Lyle!!! See what happens when you associate with Ariel. That bad influence is starting to rub off. Next thing you know you'll be guzzling blue stuff and building god only know what.

Hi from Downunder
Tommy Kortman replied to TomA's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
Welcome aboard Tom. I think you'll find that there are a pretty good group of guys here. you'll find some pretty incredible builds in the "on the bench" and "under glass" sections of this site. There is also a wealth of knowledge floating around here, so there is probably help for any question that might arise. Enjoy!! -
Why do you guys model cars?
Tommy Kortman replied to ericmaxman's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
I always considered it therapy. A chance to turn out the world and concentrate on something right in front of me. I build a little of everything (Armor, planes, figures, cars), but cars are what I build the most. My father introduced me to this addiction when I was a kid with a Hubley 32 Chevy Roadster (I think) and I haven't looked back. I enjoy taking the blank canvas of a kit, and letting my imagination run wild. I especially like to build stuff that upsets a few replica stock builders that I consider good friends. I guess what started out as "alone-me" time has evolved into spending quality time with a close group of friends that I have made over the years. ... Oh yea, and the glue still smells great after all this time!!!!!! WOOOOOOOHOOOOOOO!!!! You know what...now that I think about it...its probably all just about sniffing the glue.
