Custom 29 roadster: Tribute to Magoo
Claude Thibodeau replied to Claude Thibodeau's topic in Model Cars
Hi John! I remember that car. It was a milestone in contemporary rod circles. Made the cover of Hot Rod Magazine, but painted silver at the time. Have you seen the last car Buttera completed? A very small, polished aluminium body model A derivative, looking a bit like a Kurtis racecar? It was I N C R E D I B L E. RIP Lil' John! I can't wait to see your car. It will be inspiring, again! Super! My 1/1 33 Ford 3W was painted this color + vanilla shake. Was called BURPLE by House of Kolor. Great job! CT

Hi! You got to be going along well with your fellow passenger... tight quarters! CT -
Hi! As a side note: My local PPG dealer also offers both SOLVENT BASED paints, and so-called WATER BASED. Both can be coated with a clear top coat, but the water based is "cooler", and may come handy if your primer does not handle automotive paints as well as the fine Tamya primer obviously does. Both can be packaged in a spray can too, if more convenient for you! CT

Custom 29 roadster: Tribute to Magoo
Claude Thibodeau replied to Claude Thibodeau's topic in Model Cars
Hi! Thank you, Michael. Mr. Coddington had a way, with his chassis guy (Mr. Sergejev, I think...) of making them as low as roller skates. That is why I streched it a bit much, with looooong axle bars, air ride, low mounted big headlights reflector, and a painted rad shell. Anything to make it more "zoomy", a la Coddington! CT -
Hi! Your car is stunning, and the photography as well! I'll share it with a few friends who are MOPAR nuts... They will enjoy it! CT

Custom 29 roadster: Tribute to Magoo

Hi! Thanks for the comment. The Magoo original was a smidge longer than stock, but nos as long as mine, which I called "Pinocchio"... Magoo hand a V6, 4.3 Chey with turbo, if I remember well... A beauty! CT -
Hi! Great project, perfect stance! Are the wheels from the 57 Chey Snap kit? They look fairly similar... CT

Hi! That Buttera IRS is really sweet. Nice work adapting it to your chassis! CT

Hi! Actually, the car was drawn by Larry Erickson (now at MAGNA Industries - an OEM supplier), and before completion, Mr. Foose made some adjustments, mostly to the hood sides and grille. The body was hand formed at Boyd's, by the great Craig Naff, an extraordinary craftsman, who now works out of Virginia, if I remember well. That design inspired "clones" in the fiberglass cars business, such as: Coast to Coast, Wild Rod and OZE rod shop. Truly a great design. CT

Custom 29 roadster: Tribute to Magoo

Hi! Thank you for the comments. I try to adhere to the "less is best" mantra... but I often fail! CT -
Hi! Was always a fan of Dick "Magoo" Megugorac, and in particular his "Magoomium" smoothed red 29 roadster. I tried to pay hommage to his design using the Revell 29 on 32 frame kit. Extended the wheelbase, scratchbuilt hood & grille, front axle, IRS, Air Ride system & air shocks, windshield + opened trunk and 392 Chrysler hemi. Mirrors from Alternomad. Tamya's red & tan + Alclad. Rolling stock from Custom vicky. As Harley Earl said: Longer, lower, wider! Hours of fun with styrene. CT

Michael, you are right. Case closed! CT

I see. Then, I'm even MORE impressed. They flow like the best pros can achieve... Bravo again! CT

If you used a mask (like Lazy Modeler's), laying it out without kinks is a chore, more so on the front fenders crown.... But your paint nuances are great. CT

WoW! Superb flame job. A dead ringer for an Alloway car, World class. Bravo! CT

Hi! Nice cars! In all honesty, your very highboy on the gallery of another well known forum gave me the kick-start to do mine. Thanks! CT

Hi! Some issues with the fit of hood, grille & windshield glass are to be expected. Nothing you couldn't deal with, I guess. Here's a Highboy variation. Have fun! CT
