  1. More progress on the Accord/NSX mash-up:

    IMG_5488.JPG.241029ed882237250f590ca49586e7e3.JPG

With the floorpan and engine/suspension coming on nicely it was time to start thinking about the bodywork. With the mid-engine I need to get some air in the back, so I found these vents from an unlikely source. Any guesses?!

    IMG_5490.JPG.042781d888532b750665e8d5cf00a4e5.JPG

On my recent Mazda RX-7 build I trimmed the bottom of the spoiler. I realised it was just right for adding a bit of depth to the Accord, so that got attached. Just need a bit of finessing.

    IMG_5499.JPG.fc553e32ee4a7b8a4b1276df6fbe3c5f.JPG

Suspension completely installed, along with the V6 and transmission. I cut off the stock airbox and added this resin intake.

Have also started on the interior, although at the moment it's more cutting and trimming than assembling anything. The bulkhead was split from the interior tub and I removed the sides as I'll be fitting the Accord's door trims. The NSX tub is being raised so the dashboard is at the right height.

A little more done here, including installation of the radiator.

With some decent weather yesterday I got some initial coats of primer laid down. I can see a few things that need further attention, but nothing too bad. Trial-fitted the smoked rear glass here (it has duplicate sets of clear and tinted).

    IMG_5520.JPG.fc2f1de92162ca0a9561f4d5682a21e2.JPG

Wheels are roughly in the right place.

Widened the existing exhaust cut-out and formed a new one. Also added random bits of styrene to locate the rear of the floorpan.

    The view underneath.

Was pleased with how much it's moved forwards, I can't see anything too complicated in the near future.

  2. Something of a theme to my purchases from a couple of sellers this week:

    IMG_5497.JPG.e75782931c603d9ad227d5729b3066ba.JPG

The "Tools 2" set contained some resin/3D printed chassis stands and the photo-etch toolbox, which itself retails at something like £13 online. Thinking that I'll assemble a pair of the garage bases for photographing/displaying larger cars then keep the antique one as more of a hobby scene for smaller vehicles. Already got some other tools which I need to get on with.

The Mitsubishi is an odd thing, certainly not 1/25!

  3. I've been enjoying watching this come together over the last week or two, I wonder if any have been built before with such care and attention?

It appears to be nicely proportioned and definitely captures the look of the original. By the time I really started noticing what was on the road in the '70s many had already ended up in the scrapyards, but I recall the odd daily driver hanging on into the '80s. Our neighbour had what I remember as a tidy, pale green 2-door which replaced a rotten Mk3 Cortina around 1980.

  4. A mixed bag of arrivals this week:

    IMG_5479.JPG.1bca0c3a8aac27eff2d74d6ea5e2095c.JPG

Thought this might have some useful upgrade parts for the Accord Wagon I'm currently building for the Cannonball Community Build, but it turns out to be a different generation. Nice Lowenhart split-rim wheels (which are different to the box top). Opening tailgate an unusual feature.

    IMG_5480.JPG.5a414f559f3e978f38a52b6796993375.JPG

Bodykit is not pretty, and the original builder was going for a rather dramatic look with the colour choice. If I can clean up the black around the door handle then it would be interesting to see if it will take a coat or two of clear and polish out....

    IMG_5487.JPG.7af5a1028fbf7afae4bb6fdb56b103b4.JPG

Another rebuilder. I like these simple Monogram kits, all those I've seen so far have nicely proportioned bodyshells even if they're very basic otherwise. Sadly this one is missing it's front bumper/spoiler, but I have an Italeri 944 that was built many years ago from which I could rob something. In the meantime the box sits happily with the 280Z and TR7 I already have.

    IMG_5485.JPG.b2f99df58938e3f3b60cce8543da4dc8.JPG

A strange little kit, more of a toy really. I already had the box (purchased with another one in the range), then someone found the Citroen on a market stall. It's lost its grille and bumper but has otherwise been put together reasonably well. It has opening front doors, bonnet and tailgate, with a bit of thought it could be painted and detailed as an effective little display piece.

    Looks like it's well detailed.

As I recall from the example I built some 30 years ago, it went together nicely:

Wouldn't have dreamt of this when I built the kit back in the '90s, but I now own a 1:1 '92 LS400 so I can see what it should look like (excuse the dust and grime):

    IMG_5447.JPG.23fd46a1dd4139a8cffd408ced7c441f.JPG

The basics are there, but there's a lot less plumbing. You might be looking to replace the intake setup in any case?

Sounds like an amusing project anyway. I have a spare 1:24 engine and I'm looking to drop it into something else one day.

Nice haul! I have a soft spot for the Corvette America (have an unbuilt one here plus the remnants of the poor thing that I threw together in the '80s). Are those Aoshima wheels the really wide ones? I used some on a Monogram Corvette C2, they looked really good, but I did trim them down slightly and maybe fit some different tyres.

  7. Very kind of your benefactor!

The only other US Airfix kit I know is the racing version of the 280ZX. Scalemates suggests it's ex-Gunze Sangyo.

I had one a few years ago but sold it on - it wasn't particularly inspiring....

There's a little bit about one of them here:

How much of a link is there with the British Airfix company? Here they offered rebranded MPC kits under their own name as well those they'd developed themselves.

Since I am dealing with allot in life right now, and I don’t want to fail my self, I think I will need to resign this year.
This so I  only build when I feel for it and on any kit I feel for 😁

Good luck with everything else Anton. Life is like that sometimes, the kits and other hobbies will still be there when you have the time/motivation.

  9. Didn't realise it was over two years ago since I last did anything on this one!

    IMG_5348.JPG.f32a58cbed5acf460d9502929bd47108.JPG

Not sure that I've actually done a lot more now, but I've been spurred onto making some progress with it.

    IMG_5347.JPG.4f24bc5e2451faa009832da3154ec392.JPG

The paint went on in 2021, from memory Sandalwood Beige (Halfords automotive paint intended for a 1980s Austin-Rover). Now got to summon up courage to paint the trims along the bodywork and around all those windows.

Sliding door seems to fit OK-ish. Ride height is about as low as it will go without surgery - I think it'll suit it OK as above, some lower profile tyres would help.

Big thing now is the interior, and maybe some accessories - it might end up with the inflatable boat from the AMT Hilux kit as well as what came with it.

    The interior is coming along.......

Good to see someone else is making progress!

    Did more on mine:

    IMG_5335.JPG.6b7351c7eafed9efc566080606291c29.JPG

Cut notches in the front of the floorpan that take the tabs on the Accord. At the back end I'll need to fix something inside the rear bumper. For now I'm using a block of foam to get a consistent height for mock-up purposes. I've also shaved some material off the hub faces so the wheels sit further in. I'm about there at the front, depending on which wheels I eventually choose. At the back I will also have to take a bit off the inside of the wheel - the NSX's body gets wider at the rear, but the Accord doesn't and I don't want to add arch extensions. Keeping it subtle is the key here....

    IMG_5337.JPG.d80444ddce0c1284805f0b203f1634f4.JPG

    Back on the favoured 19s.

Then I found these BRS M10 18s by Fujimi, which I'd intended to use on last year's CBR entry that never really got started:

    IMG_5354.JPG.23f45096ba8940d52047e88cbc0f6353.JPG

With the centres painted bronze or gunmetal I think they'll suit it well, and they seem to fit better than the 19s. Also I don't think the NSX had particularly large diameter rims as standard, it probably needs a bit of compliance from the sidewall. And this is going to be something that's meant to travel fast on possibly less-than-perfect roads, not the track.

Hopefully now I'm nearly there on the suspension I can start thinking about the body and interior.

  11. Nice work so far Matt, the distinctive colour scheme looks spot-on.

By chance I was unpacking some books at the weekend and I found the Spike Anderson biography. He describes the paintwork as a "nice dark bronzy colour" over the standard Datsun 110 orange/red. The white pinstriping was added to make the bronze stand out, otherwise they merged into each other.

  12. Arrivals in the last couple of days:

    IMG_5323.JPG.3d6d03eb119947333552020c2121afbf.JPG

These new Hasegawa kits are very nice. This one allows me to put my old Tamiya version up for sale.

    IMG_5317.JPG.b7eee11076a952818e6813c912cbca93.JPG

These were bundled together as one lot at a decent BIN price. I thought the FD100 would be a useful engine donor, but seeing a recent mention by @Tom Geiger makes me think the chassis will be useful too. Skyline has more bits than the other version I have (blue car on box), so I can move that one on. Escort may end up as a Saloon Stock Car short oval racer.

    IMG_5318.JPG.6e12afbaf823608b1400a989baf29299.JPG

These  came from a seller who lists a lot of interesting built and boxed kits.

    IMG_5322.JPG.3d1276dce3166f625774f271a880899e.JPG

Toyota Soarer is by Fujimi, thinking that will be restored and given a sharknose conversion, but for now it looks quite funky as it is.

    IMG_5320.JPG.1c4f95c7387fb1fa8453efe29821ccb8.JPG

Paint on the Monto Carlo isn't quite as good as it looks, I thought it was Tamiya Candy Lime Green but it seems to have a heavier flake to it. For now I'm planning to do a basic temporary build on it, attaching things dry/with PVA so it can eventually be dismantled and stripped/rebuilt. Slammed on a set of wire wheels it should look the part.

  13. By the end of Sunday I'd managed to get this far with the stretched NSX floorpan:

    IMG_5312.JPG.2d606710d409afc57dcb3ccfef6fb35e.JPG

    It turned out OK.

    IMG_5314.JPG.b84d484964d553f238e30d3f6b5064ce.JPG

Front and rear suspension, subframes etc put together OOB, just dry-fitted at this stage. Good level of detail and very satisfying how well it fits together. I think I'm settled on how to mount the wheels, I'll keep them female fitment and fit pins to the struts/uprights, after a bit of trimming. The 19" wheels should allow for suitaby large brakes, I can rob them off another kit.

You might also check for mirrors in your kit. Judging from the box art on your kit it may not have either exterior or interior mirrors. My exterior mirrors were chrome but I dechromed and painted them.  I also have an interior mirror.

Thanks for the info John. Just had a look at mine, it has a pair of exterior mirrors plus the interior mirror, all on the chrome sprue.

I also do the mirrors last, but it's only on my latest build that I pinned them and I will certainly do that in the future.

I was actually meant to build it last year as an entrant in the Cannonball group build on here, but for whatever reason I never got onto it. Plan then was to fit a Viper V10 engine, still is....

Nice recovery. I hate it when that "gluey-fingers" thing happens and it does at least every 10th build for me.

I have the Aoshima kit of this car - different mouldings to the Fujimi one - better - but less good than the much newer Hasegawa one. For what's not exactlly a super well known classic race car, three manufactuers have all had a go at making it in kit form.

Thanks Michael. Kind of embarrassing when that sort of thing happens, should know better by now!

I have the early and facelift versions of the Tamiya kit, one of their older, motorzed efforts. As well as the new Hasegawa kit there are also road and "Cafe Racer" versions by Monogram. I'd like t get the standard one, I've built several others in that range and although they're very basic they do go together nicely and have decent-looking bodies.

It's now finished and Under Glass.

  16. Good progress so far, with the clean paintwork and tidy interior you've got the bits with most impact out of the way.

Is it similar to this later issue I have in my stash?

    IMG_9038.JPG.147382d0f3cac144d709e7963474c086.JPG

if so you've given me some useful tips for when I do mine.

Has to be said I prefer the box art on yours, almost worth $5 alone!
