Started this behemoth and was well underway when we moved and now, no space at all for resuming the build. Some background - the first pic is of the actual unit, used in Mexico to gather salt from the salt flats there. The rest of the pics show my attempt at a similar rig. Mine used the front half of the IH dump truck, the back half was all plastic stock. I used the tires and rims from an AMT monster truck kit. The closer I got to finishing it, the more I began to realize I had absolutely no place to display it when it was done. Now it's all packed away.

AMT GMC ASTRO and it’s changes through the years.
Amtronic replied to Pete68's topic in Truck Kit News & Reviews
The GMC Astro/Chevy Titan had a nice square cab that let you cut it down into a daycab version. This one is a cut down cab with a stretched frame, made into a service truck. -
I built so many of these Silverado kits, because AMT made both glue kits and snap kits that offered a lot of variety. There was a snap kit of a GMC kit that allowed you to instantly convert a Silverado into a GMC. The snap kits had a dually bed that went onto a glue kit very easily. It also supported some of the accessory kits like the camper body and ramp kit body.

I'm thinking 2-4 of these would make a great tractor pull rig. Couple of tires off a monster truck, and have at it!

1/25 AMT 1976 GMC General Tractor -- Coca-Cola
Amtronic replied to Casey's topic in Truck Kit News & Reviews
You can, with care, narrow the General cab to very closely duplicate a Mack Superliner. The main visual difference is that a Mack cab is no wider than the hood, where the General is significantly wider that it's hood. I took out about 3/4" inch to narrow my cab, and added some MACK labels etc from the MACK mixer kit. Some mirrors from the R685 kit, along with some other partsbox bits and pieces. It can be seen at the very top of the attached photo.- 41 replies

For those interested, here is the actual wrecker the kit is based on, removing a car from a sinkhole in Florida. Built using a built up cat bulldozer I got off ebay. The counterweights can pivot in and out, and are filled with nuts and washers to offset whatever I put in the sling. All the pieces are pinned to the tracks so it can easily be disassembled to travel. They're never finished I just stop working on them.

Payhauler and bottom dump coal trailer
Amtronic replied to Amtronic's topic in Model Trucks: Big Rigs and Heavy Equipment
I don't have any photos of during construction. I was getting the Payhauler kits for less than $25 each so I bought a few of them. I just hacked off the rear of one and grafted it onto this frame here. I followed the same layout of a big rig for the shorty driveshaft from the front differential. I was inspired by a photo I saw of someone who built a dual drive Payhauler dump truck with lengthend dump bed. -

Built this from a swap meet kit that had a broken cab. I built it as if it were a concrete mixer that had laid over and ate some guardrail while the mixer body came off in the wreck.
-
Built this a couple of years ago. Setback front axle, lowered the cab mounts so it reflects a Freightliner FLL cab design. The upper front car rail folds up to allow the cab to tilt forward. There is a front support (unseen) that holds the front half of the car rail. Rear fenders are from the AMT Pete Turnpiker kit.

Mack DM600 yard goat
Amtronic replied to Arnd's topic in WIP: Model Trucks: Big Rigs and Heavy Equipment
There is no way all the tires would match on a yard dog. It would have the worst of the worst tires, those that would barely hold air. Likely some taken off a trailer that had locked up an axle and flat-spotted. Recaps that had started to delaminate. Bent and damaged wheels. No mud flaps. Broken or cracked windows with BB gun damage. Maybe a dented cab from a jacknife accident, which is why it got demoted to yard dog. -
Some of my creations

Pickup trucks. I love the AMT Silverado kits, there are so many choices between glue kits, snap kits, monster truck kits, and collectibles that I have built too many to count. This one is a dually snap kit, with the Open Road camper cut down to be a slide-in camper. Another kitbash mixing parts from several kits. I picked the ugliest colors I could for a shop truck. Race car ramp truck with bomber class car. Found rare GMC grille and wrecker arm in a swap meet junk box. Had to build it..
