Want to know about Italeri Kits
Ayatollah replied to Ayatollah's topic in WIP: Model Trucks: Big Rigs and Heavy Equipment
I finally got the Ford 9000. Beautiful kits! I got two, one is the Zack-Lift style wrecker, I am VERY impressed! I am used to the Ertl and old AMT kits, and even newer Revell, but these Fords are beautiful, other than the dash. I got a revell 1/32 Mig 21 and he two Ford kits today, so now I just need 10 years to get all 3 built! Thanks for the input, now I need a good 3406 B -
Centrifugal Casting Machine
Ayatollah replied to resinslinger's topic in Car Aftermarket / Resin / 3D Printed
I used a pressure pot with an A/C recovery machine as a vaccum pump, I was never let down -
I keep hearing that too, otherwise I would have ordered a few things. looks like nice stuff though.

Roof Lights and Stacks?
Ayatollah replied to wild_chld81's topic in WIP: Model Trucks: Big Rigs and Heavy Equipment
I hnave made the stacks by getting some small stainless tubing from a parts store, cutting it at the angle, then polishing them fr a while on a bench grinder with a polishing wheel. Takes a while on stainless, but comes out great. I also used a fireplace lighter to dirt up the tips, then dusted a bit of matte clear on to keep the soot from wiping off. -
Model Body to R/C conversions?
Ayatollah replied to blue504life's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
The only real issue I could see would be the body not being able to withstand the punishment. I am no expert but do know they impact objects on a routnine basis and that is part ofwhy the RC cars are flexible bodies. I do agree, if something is just sitting at least use it for something. -
GMC Astro as SAFEWAY
Ayatollah replied to oldstyle's topic in WIP: Model Trucks: Big Rigs and Heavy Equipment
Nice day cab! I have a sidelined daycab UPS astro gathering dust and would love the time to finish it. -
Are you saying the latest re-issue of the R has the chrome ten holes and round tanks, with the square tanks and six-spokes left out?
-
There are some n the web, PCS has albums I just don't remember where. As to the seats, I assume they are the same as a regular car but this is a side-loader so it's possible something was modified. If it were a regular car, it would be perfectly understandable to do the seats this way to allow people in and out of the back seat

Which tanks and wheels come in the one they jst released, with the black truck on the box? I remember some editions having webb 6-spokes with square tanks. I would really like some decent webb 6 spoke wheels for ford builds, especially if they had the wide clamps like the 5-spoke ones in the GMC astro.

My Double Duallie

That came out nice! Used to see a lot of El Caminos done that way in the early 90's. -
2 stage color coats
Ayatollah replied to Roadkill2525's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
Learn to spary "let down panels" and get used to doing them as a routine. 3-Stages and 4 stages are very common now and knowing how many coats of the intermediate stages you want ahead of time is crucial. Keeping records of how you got what color is very important, too. It's not so much an issue of finding the color you want, but being able to do that color again later on your first try. People failing to take this seriously explains why you see so many hideous paint repairs on pearl cars on a daily basis. If they had done a let down panel that day and some basic planning, that car would be invisible in traffic. You can achieve almost anything, even with a few spray cans.....being organized is the key. Also, if you have a theory, try it out! Buy some spray out cards from your PBE store, or some spoons as they say here. Your plan may even fail, but you will often stumble upon something even better when you're trying to achieve something else. A 10-year old kid in the wrong place at the wrong time invented "bowling ball paint" lol -
It should include a 1/25 scale mullet wig and a six pack of PBR LOL. I DONT have fond memories of those old "Golden Wheels" kits, but it doesn't look bad. Maybe seeing the hobby so close to the brink of chaos so many times tempers one's meories. 1/32 Scale car wheels may work on that trailer. The bike doesn't look bad!

Want to know about Italeri Kits
Ayatollah replied to Ayatollah's topic in WIP: Model Trucks: Big Rigs and Heavy Equipment
I took some time to read those articles, and I appreciate the opportunity to see them. I had no Eye Deer they (Italeri) made a freightshaker into a Mack! It would probably be easier to start with a Mack kit and do a conversion! I will pass on that for now, I have plenty of two-year projects as it is. The real thing wasn't a bad truck at all. I want to do the Ford and have ordered one. Is italeri the ones that have the lift off roofs? I've never done any Italeri kits, other than a tank so I'm new as it gets. Thank You! -
Want to know about Italeri Kits
Ayatollah replied to Ayatollah's topic in WIP: Model Trucks: Big Rigs and Heavy Equipment
Thanks, I really appreciate it! I'll probably do the Ford then. My main wrecker for years was an '87 with a cummins, I switched to a factory reman CAT 3406B at a million-two. I guess it comes with one of the right engines, which is nice. I'd build it with the cummins. I'm not sure I feel like doing the Mack. That's the only superliner out there other than a resin conversion kit. Maybe some day. Thank you both again! -
I am considering two Italeris: Ford 9000 LTL and the mack Superliner. Are these any good, and what engine etc? The Superliner doesn't look too nice, but I like the looks of the Ford and would like to give that a shot if it's not a total mess. Other than the wheels, it doesn't look bad. It looks like the Mack has no nameplates anywhere and the proportions look sad.

international 2300
Ayatollah replied to dozer's topic in WIP: Model Trucks: Big Rigs and Heavy Equipment
Consider looking in the Die Casts. There has always been a lot of International out there as die cast, all you usually want is the cab and interior anyway, and you may get it a lot cheaper than resin. Most of the resin I've seen has been a blatant dupe of die-cast anyhow, you just pay a lot more for it. -
You probably want the tanks from a DM Also........there were chrome square tanks in the Astro cabover I will be using THOSE on my Mack wrecker because they are square but I didn't want the redneck diamond tread look. And the Sh*******ernational Payhauler had some nice looking square tanks that look great on non-dresser trucks like dumps and government fleets. The DM's were supposed to have the small square tanks until the last few years.

the rodent L8000
Ayatollah replied to buba39's topic in WIP: Model Trucks: Big Rigs and Heavy Equipment
I used to see a lot of those POS's with 2-stroke Detroit screamers under the hood. Or......you could use a J79 from a 1/24 scale F-4 Phantom -
Has anybody heard of Draggin Plastic?

GMC Astro wrecker
Ayatollah replied to bitner's topic in WIP: Model Trucks: Big Rigs and Heavy Equipment
I drove an International cabover wrecker about that wheelbase and it got into tight spots. That was a kidneybeater, but not as bad as you would expect. Loaded down really heavy, the steering got weird and I could not get used to that. Jacking up the airride wouldn't quite get it. -
Ford Snowplow Reissue

I loved the last issue! Short hauler parts open many doors too. Can't wait!
