  1. I bow to a true genius. I had a stack of 3 of these that were handed to me as a swap was closing down years ago, and wondered what (if anything) I could do with 'em. I was always looking at the rails for the Katyusha rockets as frame fodder and that sorta thing but this idea just never occurred to me. I like the track 'T' look and the bits from the Revell Model A kits always looked ok, but this is just so darn cool. Sounds like the rat rodders are going to start trolling the armor aisles at the LHS pretty soon... It's Brilliant! Brilliant! Ken R
  2. What a book or article this story would make: The rise and fall and rebirth of model car building as a hobby, The neat thing is that it would show how we got "here" from "there". I remember SAE in the old days and look at what MCM has become and am amazed that any of this flew, much less had the success it has had.I take a look at what Bill Geary does today with the same wonder that I did when looking at the feats of engineering that Dave Shuklis did when I was a kid. It is really amazing just how far we have come. I look at David Susan's work and Ted "Chopper" Lear's work and see this evolution from Bud Anderson's work and my jaw drops now just as fast as it did as a kid. You can see automotive art from Jairus Watson and Harry Pristovnik that pulls you in just like the box art from the "golden days". A lot of people are responsible, and having someone out there put it down would be a heck of a read. Ken Roenneburg
  3. Rob, this wasn't just meant for you, and the caps was purely intentional: I have a great deal of respect for everyone on this board for their insight and experience in building models. I do not, repeat do not care what your political bents are, any of you. But this load of garbage has been floating around entirely too long and dividing a group of people over something that doesn't have anything to do with model cars. If people want to tout their beliefs of any sort, there are plenty of sites out there to do it, and if you choose the right one, you will be cheered on like a hero for voicing your say. But maybe we should leave politics, religion, ethnicity, and all that stuff outside here. I want to learn from you guys (and gals) not be preached and argued at. I'll get off my stump now and shut up and go back to lurking and hoping that this one dies-the sooner the better. Ken Roenneburg
  4. KILL THIS THREAD!!!! IT HAS SQUAT TO DO WITH MODEL CARS AND IS A WASTE OF SPACE AND ENERGY NO MINDS WILL BE CHANGED AND EVERYONE WILL JUST GET MORE ANGRY!!!! JUST STOP THIS ###### NOW!!!!!
  5. Len, I am wondering if you might find something like these in a 4X4 kit: The only downside I could see is that many are not plated, and usually have the covers (with Cibie or some other mfr. engraved on them). These are relatively small, so you might be able to use headlight lenses (or MV lenses, if you want the reflector and bezel all in one) inserted into one. I dont remember an individual kit that has them, but I am sure they're out there. I have a set of non-plated SEV/Marchals that might work from a Japanese kit, but these have the covers with the graphics which will not be correct to the original. I'll check and see if I can find something closer to what they're using. KenR.
  6. Just got mine today. Fantastic coverage and how to's. Kudos to all in it and who contributed. Bill G. and Tim B. Thanks for sharing the knowledge! Ken R.
  7. I like it! in 1:1 there would be some advantages and disadvantages: Disadvantages: Radar detector tripping due to approach radar from local airport. Power lines could get a little cozy... Looking in at most truckers. Advantages: A view people pay big bucks for, anywhere you go. Write your message on overpasses without leaving the comfort or safety of your car. You wouldn't need a ladder to sneak out the girlfriend, or elope. Rent the decklid or hood out to BASE jumpers for gas money. Drive above the weather in fog or rain. Keep pushing the envelope!
  8. It depends on your work area: an office chair is usually the way to go, and you get what you pay for. If you want it to last for more than a couple of years, the mostly plastic WalMart specials are probably something to avoid. If you're in a metro area and have a used office equipment store you might snag a bargain as well. Metal bases are more durable and with a gas cylinder lift (push or pull the lever and stand up and the seat comes up to the top) are very comfy and adjustable for your height/weight and not too expensive. If you are "test driving" sit in the chair and wiggle back and forth and side to side to see if you sink: If so the gas cylinder is worn and it isn't worth going any further. Arm rests are an option and usually cost a little more, and can interfere with getting you under the bench if you need to sit closely. With my gut this isn't much of a consideration. I have had good luck with Hon brand office furniture, but they can be a little more expensive than some. Or you could go nuts and sink several hundred to a couple of thousand into something exotic! Good luck on the search, your backside will thank you!
  9. Bill, It really conveys the engineering that went into replicating the motion of the windows, cowl vent, suspension of these vehicles. It really shows how far the envelope can be pushed in miniature. I couldn't hope to duplicate something like this, and it is really inspiring and amazing to see what a truly brilliant talent can accomplish. Thanks for sharing and inspiring. You have a rare gift and great patience and perserverance. Ken Roenneburg
  10. You never know where inspiration will hit you. Really a neat low-buck detailing idea. Thanks!
  11. Hate you guys living in paradise? Naaahhhhhh!!! We just wanna come visit. Last November I went from shirtsleeve weather in the 50's to 85-89 degrees in Ponce Puerto Rico. Then it was back to about a foot of snow... It was a business trip (all business-15 minutes of daylight one day otherwise working ) but the weather was heavenly. I want to go back for fun next time. Beautiful island, great people, wonderful food, and the 15 minutes I had on the beach was nice Someday I want to check out the Hawaiian islands as well.
