Compressor Recomendation
DaveInTheHat replied to RJWood's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
I got a nice compressor at Pep Boys for $60. It has a 2 gallon tank. I probably should have got the one with a 4 gallon tank for ten bucks more. The smaller tank looked like it would fit in my work area better. -

Why Can't I build box stock?
DaveInTheHat replied to Darin Bastedo's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
I think the only thing I ever built box stock was a Flintstone car and Speed Racer's Mach 5. I guess I like changing stuff. I don't even build model buildings box stock. -

DaveInTheHat replied to ismaelg's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)

Dick Blick seems to pretty good for parts and accessories. -
What's your "most fun" build?
DaveInTheHat replied to Mike's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
This is a kit bash from 2 kits. I built this one and a coupe at the same time. Chopping the tops was a bit difficult but the rest of it was a blast. I liked it so much I might build a roadster and a fad 'T'. -
Airbrush Question
DaveInTheHat replied to NickTheGreek's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
Thats a wonderful airbrush for doing fine detail work. It is a little bit of a pain to clean out. If you're doing trick paint jobs with a lot of fades and stuff a double action airbrush works best once you learn how to use it. If you're just doing general painting. like car bodies and car parts in just about any scale the Paashe single action its easier to use and clean. They are also extreemly durable. -

airbrush recommendation
DaveInTheHat replied to gasman's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
I've been using a Paasche H that I bought 30 years ago. The only problems I ever had was wearing the set screw out. I have a couple other different kinds of airbrushes, but I seem to use the old beat up one the most. It's easy to clean and very tough. I've dropped it, left it dirty and really abused it. I would recommend getting quick disconnects, a vapor trap, and a good air compressor with a tank. The little air brush compressors give out pulsating air and it's hard to regulate the pressure. I got a compressor from Pep Boys with a 2 gallon tank for $60. I should have gotten one with a 4 gallon tank so the compressor doesn't kick on as often. -

LOL, Thanks Lyle. I'm suprised you didn't put your head on the guy. I would have taken about 500 more pictures but I left my memory card sticking out of the front of the computer. Oh well. I got rained on anyway. a tip for going to car shows in the rain..take a poncho and a 2 trash bags. Ponch keeps you dry. One trash bag keeps your stuff dry. The other one gives you a dry place to sit.

I got a used Unimat I with a bunch of tools for $135. It works fine for everything I've wanted to do with it. I've been told Sherline is a better lathe. If you're looking to buy a used one check out: www.blueridgemachinery.com They have some pretty good deals on used stuff and they can get parts for just about every kind of lathe ever made.

Hi Irv....and thanks. I don't know if I have "tons of good tips" or not. I'm trying to take a lot of pictures while I build stuff, maybe some will show up. I've been trying to update my Fotki site as often as I can. Seems like I'm always trying to figure out how to do things. You'd think after building models for over 40 years I'd have it figured out by now. I know I'm still learning new ways to do things from the Scale Auto site, the B N B Auto Builders site, and this site. It's interesting to see how everybody does things. There are some really builders that I would have never know about without a this internet stuff.
