Are We Model Hoarders?
niteowl7710 replied to mrmike's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
I don't have a list of my old kits I built as a kid, but I do have a box of every instruction sheet of every kit I did up to and including my first solo glue ki..eerrr bomb I did when I was 10-11. Showing amazing forethought for my age I kept the instructions, which must have started a trend that I followed right up till I moved out of my parents house at 19 and the wheels fell off the model building train until last summer. There are sheets for things I don't even remember building, which demonstrates the care-free restraint we had as kids. Building so many models so fast you don't even remember doing them. -
Abused the Hobby Lobby 30% off sale and got a Tamiya Nissan GT-R.

Are We Model Hoarders?
niteowl7710 replied to mrmike's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
Well in all fairness those Hoarding shows (there are two of them), aren't going to send a camera crew over to a house that has a whole load of something, but neatly organized. Not every hoarder has the inability to walk through the house for the fear of being crushed by trash and debris with 6 feet of animal feces on the floor situation. The people they show on there have more than one mental illness, or have suffered traumatic life experiences they never fully dealt with professionally. Lot of those poor souls have OCD, Schizophrenia, Agoraphobia, and other conditions that exaggerate their hoarding issues. I prefer to think of myself as a collector with intent! As I intend to build those model kits that I have purchased and/or traded for over the years. My wife says I just buy things to look at them, and I never build anything, but at the same time I try not to build stuff when she's conscious and at home because I would rather spend time with her than alone in the basement (insert your new marriage jokes here). I have almost doubled my stash since I actively started building again, and joined this motley band of misfits. I alone bought more models than Donald has in his stash over a two week period in March at a pair of shows. Because I wanted them, and because I can. I have a baby coming in July, and I know that's going to eat up my available income, so spend it now while I still can I don't believe I have hoarding simply because I can go into a LHS and leave without buying more than just the paint I went in there for in the first place. You can put me in a hobby show stocked with vendors, and unless there is something there that just really rings my bell in a "NEED THAT NEED THAT NEED THAT" sorta way I can leave having only spent $3 for admission. There's only one RoG kit at my LHS that has been clanging said bell that last few visits and I will probably heed it's tolling next time I go since my vendor guy I deal with says he can't order anymore, and I hate overpaying on eBay. Then I am done...until Revell kicks out the modern day pony cars they promised(the new Mustangs and Camaro kits), and the Hudson, C-300 and Lonestar from Moebius hit the shelves. I think that rationalization and ability to not buy is the thin tenuous line between collecting things you like and hoarding. Will I build them all before I go? I dunno I'm gonna be 33 in July, but really who can ever tell if their life is at the end of their run? All the people in my family have lived to ripe old ages, but several of them probably don't remember the last 10 years (gotta say I hope we figure out the dementia thing by the time I'm old enough to not remember I have it), and of course that doesn't factor in the ones who died in accidents, and the one who committed suicide by walking in front of a train. You could drop dead of a heart attack at 18, or live to be 110, you just never know. Being the only species that is self-aware of it's end is a problem too, but that's another thread. -
Well I approve only in as much as they didn't go to a straight black & white which everyone else seems to eventually fall victim to in the past 5 years.

Thanks. The Magnums are a little hard to track down, as they're only 50 of them state-wide assigned to the accident investigation Troopers. There are another 50 of them unmarked assigned to the State Troopers who are tasked as State Fire Marshals. All of them V-6s. -
Well for the longest time the had a green belt going around the car...Get it? Greenbelt? HA!! *rimshot* Zoli that's really sharp, you oughta march it over to the department and tell them to replace those Impalas with it.

Are we, sometimes, unfriendly?
niteowl7710 replied to DRG's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
Ya never know Donald maybe they thought they had award winning build until they got there and found out they were entirely outclassed by the other entries...or perhaps as Terry pointed out they're just jerks. I think you've seen by being around here the vast majority of model car guys are locked away in building areas far too long, ignored by their wives and children, and are fairly...desperate...to make contact with any other males of their species who share the same passion they do... -

Oh I think I can speculate how...but regardless is there a future of baggies of Dodge logos for $5? Cause while JWTBM (the NASCAR decal place) has a sheet for the Charger/300M, I can't see paying $8-$14 just for that sheet to have not have to constantly cannibalize the next set of decals for the missing logo. -

So what you're saying is...one of these And one of these? I personally have been thinking long and hard about doing one of those PA Magnums as well... -

I know you weren't, I was just echoing my enthusiasm for that choice. Also the one that Zoli points out as those body side moldings aren't on every car either, and it's a heck of a lot nicer to not have to sand/grind them off (ala the Lindberg Crown Vic kits). Although it should be interesting to see how many people getting to that point of building a 200+ part kit get to the "screw it" stage and we wind up with a bunch of Chargers who's door moldings look like the car is either mad or shockingly sad... -
The photos I've found of '06/'07 the chassis has a silverish-bronze color to it. So far Testor's Jet Exhaust is the closest thing I've found to replicate it. The cars on the tilt-able racks are '09 and newer body style...but I certainly have stolen them for reference when that kit finally lolly-gags it's way out of Revell's tooling lair. And you can never go wrong with British Racing Green...

Taking out the rear inner door handles pretty much went away with the mandatory installation of child safety looks. Turn 'em on and that disconnects the inside door handles without ever having to take apart the door panels. I for one am glad the holes are presented in the fashion (or lack thereof), as not every agency uses a cage, or spotlights, etc. Also the roof holes are too far back for certain agency specific applications as well. -
I agree with Tom. How can you ever possibly expect to drop, and have magically vanish a critical suspension part, or perhaps even a exceptionally visually integral part of the engine with everything safely in a tackle box? It really bad when you yell "Nobody MOVE!!" and you're the only one near the model desk.

Internet access being limited?
niteowl7710 replied to Draggon's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
Well ya know large corporations aren't benevolent charities, they exist to make money. That's the point of running a business to make as much profit as possible, not give your product away. They have shareholders to answer to, and those shareholders are pretty much anyone who has a 401(k), IRA, pension, or other retirement account. Their users are using more and more of their resources which require them to go out and buy more and more equipment to handle that usage. I mean the internet just sorta exploded onto the consciousness of the world in the past decade and a half. Who do you think built and paid for all of that network? The government or AT&T? I'll give you 3 guesses and Uncle Sam isn't the answer. No one is holding a gun to anyone's head and forcing them to sign up for internet service. Netflix will MAIL you the movies, you don't have to watch them right this instant. Gimmie, gimmie, gimmie!! Now, Now, Now! Faster, Faster, Faster! What I have to pay for my instant gratification...THIS IS AN OUTRAGE!! High-speed internet is a luxury item, not a civil right. If you can't afford the going rate *shrug* you don't have it. I was once so flat on my butt broke I didn't even have electricity for 3 months... Lastly, the $5 ATM fee is for using out of network ATMs, so geez stop going to the other bank and use your own, and *poof* no fee. -

niteowl7710 replied to Draggon's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
I wouldn't worry about it. 150GB is about roughly equivalent to reading every single on of the 400k+ threads from beginning to end on this forum about 275 times a month. You'd have to watch about 100 feature length films to hit that 150GB threshold. -

Yeah yeah I've seen all of that, but I want to see what the box art, manual and decals look like...plus how the contents are packed, box size, etc. I'm nosy and I'm really looking forward to this one, and can't go to NNL East to see it in person. -
Good thing this isn't about Hemi engines...

That's a West Coast Amtrak unit, they are also responsible for the Regional Rail system out there, so it's a bit more patrol orientated than the traditional East Coast guys who are more station orientated. There are quite a few CVPIs out there as well. The Chargers came with the U.S. Government's purchase of Chargers across all Federal law enforcement platforms. U.S. Secret Service Uniformed Division, National Park Service, FBI Police, V.A. Hospital Police, U.S. Border Patrol, and U.S. Customs & Border Protection (formerly Customs Service) all have also received Chargers since 2006. Also they use Expeditions now...not Explo(rer)ders. -

This is correct. From the factory at least in the few years of the run (2006 & 2007) the cars did arrive with the cover in place. Most were removed later in life, usually at the upfitter, or during the first service. I haven't seen a factory fresh car since then to know if they just stopped altogether. A lot of Crown Vics retire without their engine/intake covers as well, but they have them when new. Either way is correct depending on what stage of life you are trying to represent. -

Shotguns are still carried by most departments these days, but they are either in the trunk, or mounted to a rack across the top of the prisoner cage, so to be invisible on this model, especially since it has solid glass all the way around. Shotguns mounted to the dashboards went away with the advent of airbags. As to the V-6...yeah sure I suppose if you wanted to be uber-specific to replicate the majority of county/local municipalities having a V-6 would have been nice. But that means tooling up another 30+ part engine (if the Hemi is any indication), along with the V-6 specific exhaust. Seeing as how they couldn't bother to include enough decals to make the entire NCHP car another engine is a fantasy. The kit has 274 parts as it is... I am happy with these kits, I could be happier, but constrained by the realities of life, I am happy. -
Well it's so kind of you to offer to help me out of my predicament...
