Ok, I've had it!
Scale-Master replied to Pete J.'s topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
Roy is correct, it is how I have been having to post here for well over a month. Even tried composing in Word, pasting and posting only to get the green blocks in a loop. At least 75% of the time I have to do the copy/back up/repaste trick. Figures, worked OK that time... -
The tach on the right (on this earlier model) has a working adjustable rev reminder needle...
-
A mundane coolant cap... A gauge set of Auto Meter Ultralite series. Everything is scratchbuilt including the lenses. I created the gauge faces and the needles are parts mounted on pins, not decals... Three row radiator. Mostly made of aluminum, some brass, some steel for the core. 67 pieces make up the shell, core, core support, fittings/hardware, cap and petcock. Steering wheel. Around 20 parts. Mostly aluminum. I broached the splines into the receiver so they match the splines on the column. The red button on the right is for the nitrous. Even made a plastic wire guide to keep the switch wires from dangling loose, yes, that's a phillips head. (Note the stitching on the faux leather grip.)

MSD unit. Mostly aluminum. A couple-few dozen parts and some wires and custom decals. Even has the shock absorbing mounts. Fire extinguisher. Wheel(s). The tire is kit sourced, the wheel including valve stem and core is 100% scratch. How about a can of tire sealer? The bottom of the can has the code printed on it and there is a core in the valve too. Alternator. 42 individually scratchbuilt parts if I recall correctly...

scratchbuilt - ?
Scale-Master replied to southpier's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
I wonder if some of those terms come from magazines trying to be colorful. Things like bump-stick (Cam) and loud pedal, (Throttle) come to mind. I don't hear real people talking and using those terms. -

Sounds like something on a tranny... -

I don't think so Jim, at least not with Revell or other injection molded kit producers. It is not one person producing (mass-producing at that) those kits. There are pattern-makers, mold-makers, and people who run the production machines... Now if you look at a small company like Fischer Models (off the top of my head), here you have the pattern-maker, mold-maker and production molder possibly all being one person. In that case your analogy can work. -
I'm with you on that process Jacen. I guess I didn't post it here, but the oven cleaner trick worked on the chassis (after a soapy bath) so I also used it on the other parts. I think that since I let the body bake in the sun it may have allowed the mold release to leach out whereas the chassis was not "baked". So far it appears the clear is working as sealing agent.
-
Thanks! But... Well, looks can be deceiving. The same issue that manifested itself with the chassis (mold release permeated resin rejecting paint) reared its ugly head on the body too. After the decals were applied. I had to repair and blend what little I had of the custom mixed color (around the decals no less). The clear is hopefully serving as a sealer and trap to hold the paint on now. Oh the joys of these old cottage industry kits...

Since you started the thread I believe you can lock it too. -

Skip, I don't know if this will help as I am not accessing PB via a Mac, but recently when they changed their format, I had problems too. I found a tab that asked if I wanted to change back to the old style, I clicked on it, stated my reason, and viola, I was back to using the same familiar PB. I am actually having far more bug problems with MCM than PB right now. -
The headlights and headlight covers have been installed and the decals have been applied… Groovy…
-
Wow, you finished THAT kit in four days? I've heard some people call those kits nearly unbuildable, I for one would like to see how it looks.

You make a good point about cut & paste on the computer, but since the term and the actions of Scratch-Building is still the same as it was decades ago, I don’t think letting it evolve into an inaccurately used term should be considered acceptable. For example, this is a scratch-built brass hood, even though I used store bought solder. -

Yes, it does matter, at least to me. Scratch-building is an art form, and usually requires a bit of extra effort and skill to achieve good results. When someone claims to have scratch-built something and it is really just modified from existing parts, (or worse taking credit for someone else's work), I find it insulting to those who actually do scratch-build. What if you bought a die cast and claimed you built it from a kit? How different is that from claiming you scratch-built something you didn't? Seems like a lot of people use the term to bolster the sound of what they have made, or are just ignorant of the true meaning of the term. -
Thanks. Yeah, those intake horns are a huge contrast to the simple crude rest of the "engine compartment". Wheels & tires are done… The body has color, mixed to match the kit provided paint chip from old Testors enamels.

Hobby shop name stealing?
Scale-Master replied to Howard Cohen's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
Yeah, nothing like using misleading language in an attempt to build up a "reputation" based on falsehoods. Repeat them all you want, someone will always know the thruth... Shameful. -
It is not really an option to leave the wing off, the one and only car has it, and it was operational like a Chaparral. Here is the completed chassis/interior/engine.
-
Once I got the base black paint to stick to the resin, I hand painted the frame, interior and engine details.

Here it is with the wing installed and the base primer for the bright red-orange paint.
