GMC Astro as SAFEWAY
Mike Cole replied to oldstyle's topic in WIP: Model Trucks: Big Rigs and Heavy Equipment
Great start! I look forward to seeing this one finished. -
Simon, For a late '80s Texas truck you only need a Texas Apportioned (if the truck will travel out of Texas) plate. For a truck that will only travel in Texas a truck plate is needed. Fuel decals for the side of the truck are a different story. As late as 1995 some states issued decals for fuel permits. Tennessee required the fuel permit number to be painted on the passenger side only. Don't get me started on the hassle of filing individual fuel tax reports with every state you were permitted in, mostly quarterly. Thankfully since '95 and the implementation of the International Fuel Tax Agreement all that is out the window. If I can help any more please ask. For you who build more reecent trucks I found this site which may help you with fuel decals: Fuel decal pics and info.

Builds from the 70s? 60s? 50s?
Mike Cole replied to theflame's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
I can't tell you exactly when these were built, probably while the originals were still on hobby shop shelves. IMC Cougar II ERTL Massey Ferguson More photos of these two. Original ERTL Paystar MPC Mack DM800 More photos of these two, and the MF tractor. The Paystar was redone about 2002, photos here. I never finished the build, but this is the turbine engine from the original AMT Astro kit. A few more turbine photos. HTH -
semi truck pulling
Mike Cole replied to buba39's topic in WIP: Model Trucks: Big Rigs and Heavy Equipment
Buba, I have a couple albums that contain some photos taken at Buck Motorsports Park. Links are below, here are a few pics to whet your appetite: Cummins KT in a cabover Brockway. Hard to get good night-time action with my camera. I believe this is Tom Lindsay's KW also with Cummins KT power. This Marmon had a Cummins V903 for power. I'm certainly no expert, but i have picked up a few things. Engines of choice for the pro pullers are Cummins KTs (only available in resin), Detroit V12s (Bandag Bandit), Cat 3408s and Mack V8s. You will occasionally find a Cummins NTC or V903 (First release ERTL International Transtar conventional) or a Cat 3406. The pros run two or more turbos, water injection and ungodly fuel pressures. 1976 ASTRO
Mike Cole replied to mistermodel's topic in WIP: Model Trucks: Big Rigs and Heavy Equipment
Man, that was a loooong time ago. Best I can remember/guess is around 6 give or take a couple tenths. Can't be sure 'cause back then I didn't obsess over fuel mileage like I do now. -

Mike Cole replied to mistermodel's topic in WIP: Model Trucks: Big Rigs and Heavy Equipment
This model looks perfect. I should know, I once owned a '75. Except for the colors and wheels, the same as yours. Mine was three shades of reds & oranges with white and had Budd wheels. Two thumbs up!! -
Side Kit W.I.P.
Mike Cole replied to Semi Trailer Mechanic's topic in WIP: Model Trucks: Big Rigs and Heavy Equipment
I often see them hauling watermelons, usually uncovered. Also loads that need to be covered but due to size and/or shape would be difficult to tarp. -
Very nice model. My 2008 Antique Trucks calendar has a '57 Pontiac SD for the April photo. First one I've ever seen. Now yours makes 2. Thanks.

What's Everyone Profession,etc..job,
Mike Cole replied to stanleymsn's topic in The Off-Topic Lounge
What an interesting bunch we are. My regular job, which supports my lavish lifestyle quite nicely, is Model Car Club President. Although very important and incredibly lucrative it doesn't take up too much of my time so as a sideline I am a regulated independent intra-galactic commodity relocation services contractor. -

Display Cases
Mike Cole replied to hknladdr's topic in WIP: Model Trucks: Big Rigs and Heavy Equipment
Here's one solution: Get a 1/18th scale display case and build an extension. I used plexiglas cut in 2" strips and plastruct angles about 2 3/4ths long for the corners. Measure carefully and glue it all together, put it on the display base and put the clear cover on top. Of course you can make it taller or shorter as needed. It won't be very pretty but it will keep the dust off your truck. -
When looking for detailing reference for any project, a good source, believe it or not, is e-bay. In this case go to e-bay motors, under the other vehicles section click on commercial vehicles. Further narrow down your search to semi or dump trucks, then do a keyword search using cummins. You'll likely find several good shots of the Cummins NTC engine. You may need to wade thru a lot of trucks to find them, but that can be interesting as well. The Cummins NTC platform has been around a long time, some are big cam or small cam but the basic component layout is generally the same throughout. After you've done your basic research if you need details of a specific area or have questions as to what certain parts are, LMK and I'll take some photos of my own (being newer than what's in the kit will be slightly different) and try to help all I can. PS, don't expect instant answers as I'm on the road several days at a time and don't have a computer in the truck.

Where's your club
Mike Cole replied to Bowtienutz's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
The Central PA Model Car Club meets the first Saturday of every month. We usually meet at the fire house in Mount Wolf, PA, just outside York. Check out our website for more info. http://www.freewebs.com/cpmcc/ -
What a coincidence, a guy in our club brought one just like that to our meeting today, but I think yours looks better;-}

Mike Cole replied to wild_chld81's topic in WIP: Model Trucks: Big Rigs and Heavy Equipment
James, here is a link to Taylor Wings. I had one of their aluminum wings on my previous truck, a 1980 W900. Maybe you can find what you need there. http://www.taylorwings.com/viewProduct.tw?...ine_code=BIGRIG HTH -

Musical Models Contest, winners announced.
Mike Cole replied to Mike Cole's topic in Contests and Shows
I had not heard of many of the songs from the contests until they were referenced for the contest. As long as it's a published song and I can verify it, it's fair game. That is the reason for encouraging entrants to include the portion of the lyrics the song is based upon with their entries.
