What model was your favorite build?
Harry P. replied to clovis's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
I've built so many models over the years that I can't remember most of them, let alone which was my favorite! And all of the models I built as a kid are long gone, and no photos either... So going by the models I've built recently and have a photographic record of, I'd say this one is my favorite: -
I think they're both great, but I do like your additions.

Very nice! Colored pencil?
-
Paint looks pretty good! Nice work... BTW... you had the same exact photo posted twice so I deleted one of them.

I'm already planning my barbecue for tomorrow...

Your spacing is remarkably precise.

OK... I think I found a way to make the game cheatproof. Let's see how this goes. As always, do not post hints or answers here. PM me with year, make and model. I'm curious to see the names of the people who get it right. It may prove to me whether I have been successful in making the game impossible to do the "easy way." The answer: 1953-54 Allard Clipper

A sheet of regular old white paper. I drew a pencil line parallel to the long edge of the sheet, about 5/16" from the edge... then went along the length of the paper cutting each fringe with an X-acto up to that line... then once I had the entire 11" length of the paper "fringed" I took a straightedge and cut the fringe off about 1/16" from where the fringe ends, leaving me that 1/16" area to glue the fringe along the edges of the top.

Exactly! That's the way the game is intended to be played.

What I meant by "cheating" is that there is a way you can instantly find out the identity of the car without doing any research at all. True, there are no "rules" in Auto ID... but if you find the answer by cheating instead of by research, why bother playing the game at all? The whole point of the game is that you try to figure out the car's ID by doing research... looking up possibilities, narrowing down the choices until you figure it out. Doing it the "easy way" makes no sense to me at all... there's absolutely no challenge to it, so the game becomes pointless. It's like taking a test while you have the answer key! What's the point? That's why I was thinking about dropping the game. If the answer can be found without even trying, why bother playing the game in the first place? But I have been told of a way that I can make the game "cheatproof," so that's what I'll do from now on. I really don't care if some people do it the easy way, that's their business. I just don't get why anyone would even bother posting an answer that they didn't even have to work at to get.

At my local home center a 12 oz. can of Rustoleum Metallic Gold goes for $3.95.

ok... I have decided to keep on doing the game. I know now what I have to do in order to stop the cheaters. Tomorrow I will put up a new ID Quiz... cheatproof, I hope. It will be very interesting to see whose names don't appear on the list of who got the answer right. If my suspicions are correct, I already know several that won't be on the list. I don't get it... why cheat? It makes the game pointless. It's like those crossword puzzle magazines that have the answer key in the back. Sure, you can "solve" the puzzle by copying the answers... but what would be the point? Same thing here... if you know how to do it the cheater's way, why even bother? I don't get it. Oh well... for all of you guys who like to play the game the right way, new ID coming tomorrow!

I like it! The wheels really work on this one, and your foiling is very sharp and clean. Very nice!

You know things are bad when the snow plows are getting flipped over!

Schools closed Monday here too. Too cold for the kiddies to make the trip.

I might go back and lighten up the top... not sure yet.

I got a very interesting PM the other day from a forum member who showed me how some of you guys are finding the answer to the Auto ID quiz so easily and quickly. I've been wondering how a few of you guys were able to come up with the answer so fast... sometimes just minutes after I posted the quiz. Now I know how you do it. Apparently we have a few cheaters here. I can't prove anything, but I have my suspicions. If you are one of the cheaters, you know who you are... and I think I do, too. Obviously, the Auto ID Quiz is meant to be a fun game for you guys, and I assume that most of you play it the way it is intended to be played... you look at the photo, you make a guess, you look up stuff, you refine your guesses, etc. In other words, you do a little detective work to find out the identity of the car. But a few of you know the way to get the answer almost immediately, without doing any of the work. So I'm wondering now why I even bother. I'm going to have to think about whether or not to continue Auto ID Quiz. It's on hiatus for the foreseeable future.

I painted the top a "canvas" color. The paint soaks into the cloth material and "seals" it, so that when I trim away the excess, the edges won't unravel. I also added a decorative piping around the edge of the top. The underside won't really be visible once the top is installed, so here's a look at it. I wasn't too careful about the paint edge along where the piping meets the wooden frame, as that will all be covered up when I attach the fringe:

That's why I use anything but "model paint." Rustoleum, Krylon, DupliColor... all of them cost way, waaaaaaaaay less per ounce than "model paint." Of course, there are times when you need a specific color that is only available from Testors or Tamiya, but every chance I get to get away from "model paint," I do.
