1968 Pontiac Firebird 400 Build (70's style)
Shelbytona replied to Shelbytona's topic in WIP: Model Cars
Yeah i really like the styles and the things that were done in the 70's to the old muscle cars! Once this one is done, i'll look into my dads photo album of his/his friends cars and choose another! almost all the cars in the album look like this.. there's a few pics of 69 swinger 340 and 67 buick skylark somewhere in the albums i have to find.. -
I finished the 1969 Dodge Charger model of my dad's friends car, and wanted to build another inspired build... So i took another picture from his photo album of a car that i knew there was a model of, and i went to the LHS and picked up a firebird! Here is what i've got to work with... I'm gonna do this one a little more beat up since it wasn't in great shape (at least in this pic at the time) I will have to build shackles again, which look like they were pretty big on this car! regular steelies up front and regular chrome steelies for the back. There also seems to be a repair on the front passenger fender, done in the old pink putty. I'll have to give this a vinyl top as well and do the stripes on the trunk, hood and blacked out scoops... My dad also remembers he had headers on the car and this kit has some, so that's a bonus!

Thanks!

Thanks guys for all the compliments! it was a fun build and i've got another one of my dad's friends cars to do... 70's style of course!

I've been working on this model for about a month (A lot of hours!) and i finally got it finished up tonight... i was gonna wait until the weekend to post up pics in this section, but the pics i got will do for now.. By the time i get home from work, its dark so i'll get better pics on saturday outside. I built this model after one of my Dads Friends cars.. The reference pic i had of the car was from the mid seventies, so i built it to look like the pic. I have all the build progress in the "on the workbench" section. I scratch build the shackle extensions, used the driving lights from a shelby charger model kit, front rims are from ebay, rear wheels are from rosco's cop car kit and the front tires are from the 69 GTX kit. Here is the 1:1 car. And here is the model..

Here's the 1:1 pic again..

I'll take some outdoor pics of it this weekend and post it under glass.

Thanks guys for the compliments! It's 99.9% done! I'm very happy with how it turned out.. This is a very nicely detailed model with only a few fitment issues! I got those slot rims off ebay. Casey on this forum is the one who makes them.. they are perfect! i just took them out of the bag and painted them! Good tip on that decal, i might try that on the Dart model i'm making next.
-
Thanks! No worries, I never intended on detailing it this much, so it never crossed my mind to remove it... it's not too late.. i will sand it off and touch up the tank.

Those tabs glued on the lower valance are the perfect problem solver! it slid right into place without glue. (the clear glue hasn't dried on the valence fog lights in the pics, so they look kinda foggy) I got a good part of it done tonight! i have the hood/hinges to finish as well as the exhaust tips... then i final waxing and its done!
-
Thanks! I got the grill finished... i always seem to mess up the finish with silver on a bigger area when using a brush, so i chopped the grill inserts out so i could airbrush the pieces separately. I painted the grill inserts semi gloss black, and the outer grill shell tamiya flat aluminum. I then pieced it back together with some really thin styrene. I added little tabs to the corners of the lower valence to hold it tight against the body as well... Hopefully this works good on final assembly, since i see most people having troubles with this lower valence... i also built the lower sill trim and put it on.
-
Tail panel is finished. I also got some more random decals on as well as the gas cap detailed and put on.. It's getting there! hopefully have it finished up next weekend!
-
Thanks guys for the comments. No this is my Dads friends car, I'm building this model for my dad. I got the engine compartment done... all i have to do is connect the brake booster hose once the glue dries.
-
I got the rims painted.. fronts are alclad polished aluminium, rears are alclad chrome. I got the rear wheels detailed and put on.

Thanks! I got the chassis and body together... I've gotta cut the front spindles and lower the front a bit, so it looks like these pics. The front sits a bit high on this model for stock ride height anyway.
-
Engine is done! I got my slot rims today and they look awesome!!!! Thanks Casey! I wanna make a 70's era dart next and those extra slot rims i got will be going on it! I'll be painting the wheels this weekend and hopefully have it on four wheels next week. I got the firing order correct, but this distributor doesn't show it well.
-
Thanks guys! I added one more detail to the motor... i made a spring out of a wire strand, i wrapped it around a needle to give it it's shape and used a PE bracket to hold it in place.
-
Here is the Motor/trans completed... Once i get my pre wired distributor i'll put that in. All the holes are drilled, so it will be easy! I'm hoping my part show up this week!

Haha! My model looks like a beginner built one compared to all you pros in here! This is only my 6th build.. i used to build glue bombs when i was a kid! This kit has a few issues! the rear diff isn't centred to the wheel well.. the front seats were located to far back and the transmission doesn't fir to the motor without ALOT of sanding! thats the issues i've ran into so far. I got some more work done today... i tried 3 times (wrecked 3 decals from various kits) to get that 440 magnum decal on the air cleaner... all the micro sol in the world won't get it on without it wrinkling!! so i puttied up the air cleaner to take the angle out it it, and it worked out perfect! I used a PE nut for the top of it as well. Anyways here's a few more pics.
-
Haha thanks! you've done a great job with yours! I started on the engine, i was just gonna run the plug wires, but i've already gone this far so i decided to add a little more detail. I ran the PCV to the back of the carb, ran the fuel line and i will run the hose from the oil fill to the air cleaner once its on.. I've already got the holes drilled. I'll wire the battery and run the brake booster hose and that should be it for the extra under hood details.

Thanks! Here's a few more random pics with the interior in...

Thanks guys! haha i don't know if i'll do the 68 charger after this one... i want to build the 68 dart next! Your 69 Charger is looking very nice! I like the colour you went with... I like mopars with the not so popular colours.. i wanna do my dart in that T9 bronze metallic. The brown i used is Nato brown acrylic by tamiya.. it's a pretty close match and doesn't dry glossy. the black is duplicator vinyl dye.. it works great for interiors! The white is an antique white.. almost identical to ford oxford white. I got the windows in as well as the interior light and rear view mirror. I'll glue the interior tub in tonight, then i'll begin on the motor/trans!
