USA-1 CORVETTE LSR TEAM! WIP Photos! Finished Now!
alarmstrong replied to Ira's topic in WIP: Model Cars
If I was doing this build I would have left the Corvette Indy front end on the car, but if I were doing this build it would probably look like a blind 4 year old with tourettes was building it. Carry on -

mike i was in the same boat as you are about two years ago. I had built models as a kid, never detailed and always ended up broken within days. My suggestion to you is this: continue to buy kits that interest you and try different paint schemes with them, use laquer one coat, acrylic and enamel paints, you will find what you like and what you are comfortable using and what you like to use in time. Practice makes perfect and in order to achieve most of the detail you will see on this or other sites you will need to amass a laundry list of tools and skills. What i personally have done is when I get to a part of a specific model that is out of my league, due to lack of skills or proper tools, I shelf it and make a list of what I need to buy or practice before I move on with it. And, above all else, continue to use the micheals and hobby lobby coupons so that you do not get really pissed when you mess something up really bad. Keep looking at builds and works in progress and ask questions. -
thanks jim i got the idea from the article in build better muscle cars on page 73. i went a slightly different route though

Couldn't wait until Saturday... I just finished, mostly, my new paint/tool/supply caddy it has storage for 33 tamiya or Testors bottles of paint and I may add another row on the top step for 11 more. The shelves on the right hold 12 short cans of spray paint with more space available on the top shelf. Don't know what I am going to use that space for yet probably set the parts for the car I am currently working on up there or maybe built cars not sure yet I just set it up now

what is the deal with overspraying the undercarriages on model cars? i can possibly understand 70's era and before cars maybe having some overspray issues but in todays robot controlled spray booths it doesnt seem likely to have an issue with this. i have looked at some of the new cars like the camaro undercarriages and have not seen any instance of overspray on them. am i being too anal?

Had a great weekend score on Saturday. My son and I picked up 5 new kits in trade for a 13 year old helicopter that I never learned to fly. We got 2 Tamiya Ferrari's the Modena Spyder and a Testa Rossa we also got the VW Samba Bus and the new release of the 427 Cobra from Revell and a Corvette that I have never seen before from accurate miniatures says it is a 64 prototype. All in all a great score for a toy that was taking up space and collecting dust for the last 13 years! I have wanted to build a Tamiya kit for a while now and have always balked at the $40+ price tags, too bad hobby lobby or micheals don't carry them.

making resin engines
alarmstrong replied to alarmstrong's topic in Car Aftermarket / Resin / 3D Printed
i went back to hobby lobby today to look for more silicone mold material and found the two part mold putty. is this any good for making molds to use more than once? can you make a 2 part mold with it? or is it a waste of time and money? -

Is there any special prep to resin cast parts for painting? I.E. do I need to primer before painting or wash in any special way? -

Well I tried my hand at resin casting last night and this morning and I have to say I think it came out pretty decent. I am going to need more silicon mold material but I think this resin viper engine will find its way into the 39 Chevy coupe that I am building in some form. -

thats why i went to hobby lobby with the 40% off code got a starter kit for the same price as a model kit and i get to test if i am interested in resin casting. figured this is a 2 birds one stone situation. -

so then in this instance i would cut the engine from the trans and assemble the engine halves and then cast the parts? it seems as if this is going to be a case by case basis. reading your advice, everyones advice, i can surmise that the intricacies of the viper engine would make it beneficial to do the engine halves right off of the tree as the trans and part of the differential and drive shaft are attached. is it better to do the engine halves in one mold and other pieces in separate molds or does that make a difference? -

so this is the first time i have attempted to cast anything and i was knocking around the idea of casting a viper or Ferrari engine and modifying it into a 65 stepside pickup. looking at these engine/trans pieces i think it would make sense to do each half separate and try to cast them as they are off of the trees and then assemble the cast pieces. they look far to intricate to assemble and cast all together. -
what is the best way to cast a resin replica engine? is it better to do each piece individually or build the engine and do it all at once?

is that color Tamiya Candy Lime Green or Testors Lime Ice?
-
I will take it outside after I wash and wax it again. The red is really dark though.

Thank you.

The glue did end up drying clear on the headlights, I took the picture a few minutes after installing them.

Thanks Lee. For some reason Ford had 3 different shades of yellow for the 64.5

I wish it was Phoenician Yellow... That would have been a little easier as Testors makes that color in a spray lacquer. His car was Sunlight Yellow, so I used the closest paint I cold find which was Krylon Lemon Meringue.

Thanks Jim... I live on the South Side of Chicago and yes he spent 2 years in Korea installing telephone equipment. Thank you.

This car was built to replicate the one that my father had before he joined the Army. I stopped building cars for about 20 years and just recently began building them again. This is only the second kit that I have completed since getting back into building models. I built this one for my fathers 63rd birthday present. This build took me 7 days and has 9 coats of yellow paint on it. I think it will be a very long time before I paint another yellow car! Any comments are welcome.
