I'm trying to catch up on taking pics of my recent builds. Tamiya kit. Box stock. This one was a lot of fun to put together. Tamiya quality as usual.
-
It's the Revell USA kit, molded in white. I cut the windows and only installed the rear windows and the bit that holds the mirrors because the whole window wouldn't fit right otherwise. Now it merely looks like the windows are rolled down. I've made a personal vow, that if I build more Ferrari kits, never to paint them in red. 8) I just pikced up a Superamerica kit, and I'm pondering what color to paint it. I think a rich royal blue might be in order.
-
Fought this one through most of the build, but I'm happy with the final result. Paint is a Honda touchup lacquer to resemble Ferrari Grigio Alloy. Crazy Modeler metal emblems as well. The rest is box stock. I threw some personal touches in there, like the red brake calipers and a custom mixed color for the interior floor.

Source for a resin CB radio?
Merkur XR4Ti replied to Merkur XR4Ti's topic in Car Aftermarket / Resin / 3D Printed
Hey fellas, thanks for the info. I've been hooked up with a couple from some other folks, but I really appreciate the offers. Sadly enough, I don't have a single kit in my collection from those MPC 70s to 80s years. -
I'm wondering if there's a source for a resin CB radio that looks like this: The one pictured is out of the Daisy's Jeep kit, but I'd rather not purchase an entire kit just for one part.

What do you drive?
Merkur XR4Ti replied to gasman's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
I'll be at classic Plastic, without a doubt. I do a lot of long-distance driving, so the Volvo's a great choice for me because the seats are so darn comfortable. -

This isn't my actual car (no pics of mine yet), but it could be its twin brother. 2004 Volvo S60 in Platinum Green. Yes I'm Yuppie scum! I bought it in December to replace my trusty Olds Intrigue which had been my daily driver for 5 years. -
R/M Ferrari 612 hood fit
Merkur XR4Ti replied to Merkur XR4Ti's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
The paint I'm using seems extremely non-flexible; one of the reasons I had to do a repaint is that in my efforts to massage the hood into shape the paint cracked. I was so bummed out that I had to repaint that I polished the whole thing afterwards before remembering that it's metallic! I'll try a bit more grinding and massaging to get this thing to seat properly. -
I am diligently working on my Ferrari 612 and have found the going frustrating so far, although not due to any faults in the kit itself. Bad paint jobs happen to everyone, and they happened to me on this one. Anyway, after fixing the paint I am having a devil of a time getting the hood to fit well into the body with the engine surround insert installed. I seem to have a small warp in the hood, but it also appears I may need to grind down some material on both the hood hinge and the engine bay insert to get a tolerable fit. Anyone have these issues with this kit? While the kit looks nice I must say I will be glad when this build is over.

I just got a sheet of Crazy Modeler metal parts for the Ferrari 612 I'm currently working on. I'm having a heckuva time trying to get the parts off the sticky clear plastic sheet that they are attached to. I got one of the small pracing horses off to use on the engine, but I cannot get the 612 logos off the sheet without ruining them. Anyone struggle with this problem? Any ideas?

Polishing cars
Merkur XR4Ti replied to sno_man80's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
Scott, I am an average modeler. These guys have given you some great advice. I'll tell you what I usually do on my builds: - Wash the body thoroughly in warm soapy water and let it dry. - Apply a couple of light coats of primer. If you're painting the car black or dark blue or silver, you can use gray primer. For nearly every other color I use white primer. - I'll examine the primed body for molding lines and other imperfections and remove them if necessary. I'll then reprime after that. - I give the primed body a quick rubdown with a 2400 grit sanding pad. - I apply 2 mist coats of color, waiting about 10 minutes between each one. If I'm using rattle cans I warm the can in a bowl of warm water beforehand. - I'll then apply 2 to 3 wet coats of color, allowing 30 minutes or so between each one. If the color looks good I let it dry for about a week. - If it's a solid color, I'll then start rubbing out the color with Micromark sanding pads, starting with the 3200 grit, and working through 4000, 6000, 8000, and finally 12000 grit pads, being careful of the edges. - If the color is metallic, I'll apply a couple of wet coats of clear over the metallic first, then use the sanding pads. - I'll then rub the model down with Novus #2 fine scratch remover. - If I'm using automotive lacquers, I'll then rub the body down with Meguiar's #7, followed by Megiuar's #26 wax. If I'm using hobby lacquers I won't use the Megiuar's (it tends to soften hobby paints) and instead I'll finish up with some of the Treatment's Model Car Wax. This car was painted using Testor's Lacquers, and using this system it turned out very smooth and shiny. There is no clearcoat on this model. -
Detailing head and taillights
Merkur XR4Ti replied to Paul C. Anagnostopoulos's topic in Tips, Tricks, and Tutorials
Paul, For the taillights, try putting a piece of BMF behind each one. That substantially improves their appearance as 1:1 taillights are backed by chrome. -
That looks fantastic! I hope mine comes out half as nice.
-
I just picked up this kit today. I think I'm really going to enjoy building it out. The engine bay insert is chromed, so I'll either have to give it a bleach bath or just paint over the chrome with Testor's acrylic. I'm leaning towards a wine-red pearl paint job, with a silver base along the bottom. I'll have to mentally play with the paint scheme for a while.

Hi there, just joined up. I usually use my real name as my ID on these boards, but decided to have some fun with this one. I'm over at Randy's board and Hobby Heaven as well.
