ANYBODY, any age, can watch the Cardi B WAP video on YT without signing in. But you have to verify your age and sign in to watch some old John Wayne movies, and even something as innocent as The Courtship of Eddie's Father. Clown world, indeed.

Looks like it's been there since at least the 1920s, so that might not be an issue...

Possums and raccoons were getting more of the food I put out for the feral cats than the cats were, but since I started bringing it in around dusk, no more.

If you measure "outcome" in finished models, I'm pathetic. Not quite two since 2012 or so. But if you measure it in enjoyment of the time I actually spend at the bench, I think I'm doing just fine.

Your Approach to Building?
Ace-Garageguy replied to Calb56's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
The reference above to "stories" reminded me that I also enjoy building "what if" style models of competition cars, customs, or rods that could have been reality, often in periods well before my life began, using parts that are era-appropriate...as I would have built them way back when. Along with that is an interest in later period competition cars, sometimes "what ifs", but also prototype or development versions of real cars, as I'm usually much more interested in a car's engineering and appearance (shape and form) than in a particular car's competition history or driver. -
One I forgot: the early stock-only issue of Monogram's '50 Ford pickup, as I needed a stock 8BA/8CM flathead (differences from earlier engines being a detachable bellhousing and a conventional distributor located where you can get to it easily), with the 8RT truck water pumps and front mounts, to live in the A-V8 I'm doing for the Race of Gentlemen street-drag group build. As usual, I'm getting somewhat bogged down in esoteric details for what started as a "simple, quickie" project...but I'm having fun. EDIT: And I really like the light blue this thing is molded in. When it gets built, it'll get something interesting and Ford, like a multi-carb Y-block or 406 FE, so no worries there.

Trumpeter 1960 Pontiac Bonneville
Ace-Garageguy replied to Sidney Schwartz's topic in WIP: Model Cars
This is all fascinating to me, as one of the reasons I bought the Trumpeter version was that, on seeing a custom one built here on the forum, I really liked the almost "business coupe" look of it, and decided to go for a phantom build along those lines. -
That certainly bites a big one. Sounds like the mold halves for the body were out of register, and who knows what happened to the sprues...maybe short-shotted and pulled from the tool while still too hot. Makes me wonder if there are multiple tooling sets for this kit, because neither of mine have anything like that level ot fubarredness. Guess I got lucky.
-
The only complaint I'm currently aware of is the discrepancy between the length of the roof and decklid panels when compared with AMT annuals. I did a Q&D side-by-side comparison when the Trumpeter kit came in, and there are noticeable differences. I don't know which is correct (though I'd guess AMT got it right), but I'll be building the Trumpeter kit as-is body-wise, with the story that the exaggerated "carrier deck" proportions (assuming they're not correct) are intentional customizing.

Following Instructions, Toddler with Legos Edition.
Ace-Garageguy replied to Joe Handley's topic in The Off-Topic Lounge
I've had job applicants with the little piece of paper proclaiming they were "certified" welders, who couldn't do much better than that. And I've also worked with FAA licensed aircraft mechanics who couldn't time a magneto, and put brake pads in backwards. Scary what "certified" sometimes actually means in reality. -
Very often they are indeed Frams, but they may also be Ferrari-specific. Fram filters were at one time very good. The apparent quality decline is a fairly recent thing. The bugger about the 365 Ferrari mounting them upside down is the almost inevitable dumping of oil all over everything when you change them, even when equipped with "anti-drainback" valves.

Interesting. I still have both these releases of the AMT '69 Corvair here in ATL, and if anything, the Round2 version is better. It's molded of a harder, white styrene, and is very crisp...while the earlier (AMT/ERTL) issue is a softer gray styrene that was pulled from the mold a little hot and exhibits some minor warping of the sides.

A couple more recent acquisitions, inspired by builds on this forum: And one of these, just because:

Chevy engine red or orange?
Ace-Garageguy replied to khier's topic in Model Building Questions and Answers
There are a couple of Chevy engine red and orange colors, and even the real-car paint suppliers don't always agree on what's "correct" for what. I believe Snake45 is something of an authority on this. -

Following Instructions, Toddler with Legos Edition.
Ace-Garageguy replied to Joe Handley's topic in The Off-Topic Lounge
Not to be too serious about a kid's approach to enjoying her Legos...but it's been my experience that creativity is best nurtured into something useful if one learns to "color inside the lines" at some point, with the understanding of artistic or technical conventions and the development of eye-hand coordination that entails, prior to embarking on more "creative" endeavors. Modelers who haven't mastered basic skills before attempting heavy mods illustrate the idea nicely. Without learning the basics, one tends to remain at this level of competence indefinitely: -
